My hobby is watching and collecting movies on VHS and DVD. On 17 June 2003, I found the IMDB site through an indication of a friend. My first review was "Anazapta" and since then, when I finish watching a movie, I write my personal opinion about it.
I am eclectic, but my genre number 1 is horror. I see between 800 and 900 movies per year, including TV series ("Sex and the City", "Angel", "Buffy", "Six Feet Under", "Lost" etc.).
My favorite movie is "Casablanca" and it is hard to point out my favorite director, actor and actress. I usually do not read any review before seeing a movie, in order to be not influenced by the critics.
I am trying to list my favorite movies alphabetically ordered, but this list may change:

Not of This World (1991)
Recalls a Sci-Fi from the 50´s
After a meteor shower in the countryside, a destructive alien bio-mechanic form arrives together with the meteors feeding of electricity. The engineer Linda Fletcher (Lisa Hartman) has returned from New York with her son Billy Fletcher (Michael Greene) to the farm of her father, the local doctor Avery (Pat Hingle), to be responsible for the construction of a power plant with Japanese investment. Her friend Walt Tressie (Luke Edwards) has indicated her to the Japanese representative Mr. Shikido (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and she is pressed by the mayor Bruce MacNamara (Xander Berkeley) to accomplish the tight schedule to the commission of the power plant. Meanwhile Linda is seeing her former sweetheart and baseball player, Sheriff Tom Conway (A Martinez). After a couple of deaths, they learn that the creature must be destroyed to protect other towns. Will they succeed in their intent?
"Not of This World" is one of those B-movies made for television that recalls a sci-fi from the 50´s in colors. There is a poor character development, lame special effects but entertains. Maybe the most irritating is the conclusion, with Linda, Tom, Shikido, Doc and Billy happy together, forgetting that Gerry gave his life trying to stop the alien creature and not reporting the event to the National Security Agency. My vote is five.
Title (Brazil): "Semente do Terror" ("Seed of the Terror")
The Shape of Water (2017)
Romantic Dark Fantasy
In Baltimore, in the early 60´s, the lonely and mute Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) is the janitor of a secret government laboratory where she works in the night-shift with her friend Zelda Fuller (Octavia Spencer). She lives in an old apartment above a movie-theater and she usually watches television with her other friend, her next-door neighbor Giles (Richard Jenkins), who is a gay artist. When a creature captured in a South-American river and brought to the laboratory, Elisa feels curiosity and learns that he is an Amphibian Man (Doug Jones). She secretly feds him every night with egg and listens to music in his room, and they become close to each other. However the security agent Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon) is bitten by the creature and loses two fingers. He meets General Hoyt (Nick Searcy) and convinces him to eliminate the creature. When Elisa discovers, she decides to rescue the Amphibian Man and release him in the sea. The scientist Dr. Robert Hoffstetler (Michael Stuhlbarg), who is a Russian agent, decides to help her.
"The Shape of Water" is a romantic dark fantasy film by Guillermo del Toro with a beautiful and bizarre love story. Elisa is a sort of the Beauty and the Amphibious Man would be the Beast in this mature film. The cinematography is amazing in an environment of the early 60´s in Baltimore. The performances are top-notch and the soundtrack is top-notch. "The Shape of Water" was awarded with the Golden Lion in the Venice Festival and many awards in the Golden Globe. It was also considered one of the top ten movies of 2017 by the American Film Institute. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "A Forma da Água" ("The Shape of the Water")
Devil's Gate (2017)
Surprisingly Good and Underrated Sci-Fi Film
FBI Special Agent Daria Francis (Amanda Schull) is assigned to travel to Devil's Gate, a small town in North Dakota, to investigate the disappearance of Maria Pritchard (Bridget Regan) and her son Jonah. Her prime suspect is the husband and father Jackson Pritchard (Milo Ventimiglia), who lives in a farm in the middle of nowhere. However Sheriff Gruenwell (Jonathan Frakes) asks Francis to let Jackson alone since he would be a good man. Deputy Conrad 'Colt' Salter (Shawn Ashmore) heads with Francis to interview Maria´s sister and she leaves her house convinced that Jackson may be hiding them. When they arrive at his farm, Jackson assaults Maria and she enters the house to investigate, and finds a weird thing. What is Jackson hiding?
"Devil´s Gate" is a surprisingly good and underrated sci-fi film. The screenplay is intriguing and the lead cast (Amanda Schull, Shawn Ashmore and Milo Ventimiglia have good performances. The conclusion after the initial credits is a cliffhanger for a possible sequence. My vote is seven.

The Battle for Kattegat
When Floki proposes to build a temple to the gods, a few discontent followers protest. Meanwhile, Lagherta, Bjorn, Ubbe and Halfdan propose peace to Ivar, Harald and Hvitserk to avoid the battle and a slaughter of their people. Will they make an agreement for peace?
"The Joke" is one of the best and most intense episodes of "Vikings". The action is continuous and the bloody Battle for Kattegat is very well choreographed. Ivar is the great villain of the series and the conclusion is indeed a pause in his intentions. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil):"The Joke"
Incredibly Bad Movie
The "Jigsaw" franchise had a reasonable beginning in 2004 and along the years, the downfall was easily predicable with terrible, incredible and worse and worse screenplays. In 2010, the franchise reached its bottom with the awful "Saw 3D". The franchise was resting in peace, but seven years later, the directors Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig decide to revive the infamous franchise with the writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. The result is a shameful bad movie with the most absurd and incredibly twists and overrated in IMDb. My vote is three.
Title (Brazil): "Jogos Mortais: Jigsaw" ("Mortal Games: Jigsaw")
Lady Bird (2017)
Inspiring Film for Teenagers
"Lady Bird" is an inspiring film for teenagers and practically the directorial debut the unknown Greta Gerwig, who is also the writer of this sensitive coming of age story. Saoirse Ronan has wonderful performance in the role of Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson, a teenager with typical adolescent problems. Troubled relationship with her mother and siblings; high-school pranks; romance; sex; disappointments with boyfriends and friends; financial problem; dream on going to college and improving life, all these elements are realistically explored by Greta Gerwig, maybe based on her personal experiences in Sacramento. The optimist conclusion with the growth of Christine is another plus in this original film. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Lady Bird: É Hora de Voar" ("Lady Bird: It Is Time to Fly")
Deceptive Ending Without a Conclusion
"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is a great crime movie in an environment of grief, anger, remorse, racism, violence, sympathy and a sophisticated black-humor. The performances are top-notch and it is hard to point out only one or two names in the cast, indeed a constellation of stars. Maybe the performances of Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell may be highlighted since they are the lead. Unfortunatelly the deceptive ending without a conclusion throws cold water in this film. The redemption of Dixon finding the rapist killer would have given some hope to the story. But the author decided to keep a dark ending without conclusion. Claude Chabrol was a master in mystery films with open end; however his conclusion were subtle and ambiguous, giving the chance to the audience to discuss possibilities based on his or her interpretation of the storyline. But the conclusion of "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is indeed a cliffhanger usually used in TV series or films written for franchise or at least a sequence. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "Três Anúncios Para um Crime" ("Three Billboards for a Crime")
Stargate SG-1: Birthright (2003)
The Female Jaffa
The SG-1 travels to a planet to meet a group of rebel Jaffa; out of the blue, they are attacked by an army of Jaffa and saved by a group of female Jaffa. They invite the SG-1 to travel to their plane to meet their leader, Ishta. She proposes an alliance between her rebel group and the Earthlings. Ishta explains that they have problem to take symbiotes since they need to defeat Jaffa and the SG-1 offers Tritonin as an alternative method for them. Four women volunteer to travel to the SGC as subject to experiment Tritoninn. But the outraged Neith does not accept the use of Tritonin jeopardizing the life of her teenage sister Nesa.
"Birthright" is another episode with a Jaffa group. The difference this time is the gender, since it is a female group of warriors. However the great attraction is the gorgeous Jolene "T'Pol" Blalock in the role of the leader of the female warriors. My vote is six.
Title (Brazil): "Birthright"
Westworld: The Stray (2016)
Complex Entwined Storylines
"The Stray" is the third episode of "Westworld" with complex storylines and great character development. Dolores is having flashbacks from her previous lives while Tedy has a new role in the park. Many hosts are having abnormal behaviors and Bernard is investigating the cause. Theresa is worried about the safety of the guests and with Robert Ford that is changing the narratives of the hosts. Elsie is investigating the hosts and finds they have a conversation with the mysterious Arnold. There are so many entwined storylines that is difficult to comment the show with no spoiler. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "The Stray"
Stargate SG-1: Avenger 2.0 (2003)
Annoying and Silly Character
After another failure in his invention, Dr. Felger lies and tells that he is working in the virus Avenger to trap the Goa´ulds in a mining planet avoiding them to dial the gate address from the distant planet. But when he releases the virus. All the Stargates present problems and most of the SG teams are not able to return to the SGC. What will Dr. Felger and Samantha do?
"Avenger 2.0" is another terrible episode of "Stargate SG-1" with the participation of the annoying and silly Dr. Felger. Why the writers insist in this unfunny character does not seem to have an explanation. My vote is five.
Title (Brazil): "Avenger 2.0"
Der letzte Mann (1924)
The Vanity and Cruelty of Mankind
Emil Jannings is the doorman of the elegant Atlantic Hotel. He is proud of his uniform and function, and respected by his community. When he reaches the old age, he has difficulties to carry trucks and suitcases. The hotel manager decides to change his function to washroom attendant. This apparently simple action is enough to destroy him as a human being. He loses his self-respect and when his neighbor finds that he is janitor of the hotel, he loses the respect of his neighbors and friends.
"Der letzte Mann", a.k.a. "The Last Laugh", is another masterpiece directed by F.W. Murnau. It is an authentic study of the vanity and cruelty of mankind. The gossip and lack of respect to the elders is also shown in this fantastic film. The performance of the great Emil Janning is top-notch and the plot is based on his character and corporal expressions. The talent of Murnau is impressive, since he changes the heartbreaking narrative and turns into a comedy, with the doorman receiving the inheritance of an America millionaire and becoming "the last laugh" of the title of the movie. My vote is ten.
Title (Brazil): "A Última Gargalhada" ("The Last Laugh")
The Bachelor (1999)
In San Francisco, Jimmie Shannon (Chris O'Donnell) is a confirmed bachelor. When he meets the independent Anne Arden (Renée Zellweger), she becomes his girlfriend along three years. Meanwhile each of his friends get married and Jimmie decides to propose Anne to marry him. They go to a fancy restaurant but the clumsy Jimmie get into trouble when he unintentionally offends her. Anne decides to travel to Greece bur she changes her idea and travels to her parents´ home with her sister Natalie Arden (Marley Shelton). Meanwhile Jimmie´s grandfather James Shannon (Peter Ustinov) dies. His friend and lawyer shows a videotape where James tells that Jimmie must be married until 6:00 PM on his 30th birthday to inherit one hundred million dollars. But his birthday is one the next day and Jimmie believes Anne is in Greece. Now his only chance is to find one ex-girlfriend that accepts to marry him. Will he be well succeeded?
"The Bachelor" is an absolutely underrated comedy, with an entertaining and delightful story based on a play. The situations Jimmie Shannon gets in with his ex are hilarious. The final scene when he is chased through the streets of San Francisco by hundreds of brides is unforgettable. Renée Zellweger is very sweet in the role of Anne Arden. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "Procura-se Uma Noiva" ("A Bride Wanted")
Westworld: Chestnut (2016)
Only Reasonable and Totally Overrated
The guests Logan and William arrive at Westworld with different objectives. Logan wants to have orgy and good time while his friend William, who is visiting the park for the first time, is sensitive and helps the hosts that are in trouble and does not wants to have sex in the park. Meanwhile The Man in Black abducts the outlaw Lawrence to force him to show the location of the maze, killing his wife and friends. His daughter indicates the direction to find the maze. The prostitute host Maeve recalls her past lives after talking to Dolores. Elsie and Bernard investigate the cause of malfunctions of the hosts.
"Chestnut" is a reasonable and overrated episode of "Westworld". The plot is not intriguing and the screenplay is confused with the introduction of two non-attractive characters, Logan and William. My vote is six.
Title (Brazil): "Chestnut"
Westworld: The Original (2016)
In the future, the Western-themed amusement park Westworld is a place where android hosts receive human guests that live experiences in the West in different storylines performed by the androids. The hosts are programmed to not harm the humans. When a software updated is implement in the hosts by the Westworld´s creator Dr. Robert Ford, there is a malfunction in the sheriff first and in a criminal later, and the manager of the park Theresa remove the updated androids from Westworld to keep the guests safe. Meanwhile the host Peter Abernathy acts strange after finding a photo taken outside Westworld. His daughter Dolores is in love with the host Teddy and when he is killed in a shooting, Dolores is deactivated and interrogated by the Westworld programmers.
"Westworld" is a promising series based on the 1973 "Westworld" by Michael Crichton. The storyline is interesting, showing androids with feelings and the backstage of the amusement park, with manager, programmers and the creator performed by Anthony Hopkins. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "The Original"
Tôkyô gûru (2017)
Melodramatic and Boring
In Tokyo, the shy student Kaneki Ken (Masataka Kubota) dates the girl Kamishiro Rize (Yû Aoi) and while in a lonely park, she attacks him since she is a flesh-eater ghoul. Kaneki escapes but soon he learns that he has become a ghoul. He befriends a group of peaceful ghouls and tries to live his new life with them. However they are hunted down by relentless two police officers from the Ghoul Division in charge of eradicate ghouls from their district.
"Tôkyô guru", a.k.a "Tokyo Ghoul", is a boring and melodramatic Japanese action-horror film based on the legend of the flesh-eaters ghouls. The cinematography and performances are good, but the action is broken by melodramatic scenes and the film becomes boring. My vote is four.
Title (Brazil): Not Available
Bjorn returns to Kattegat with Halfdan and they learn that Ivar and Harald will attack the town in the full moon. Halfdan promises to fight his brother with Lagherta, who has a new allied, and they plot a plan to defeat Ivar. Meanwhile Floki arrives at an inhospitable land after walking for many days, but he convinces the farmers that the place if the land of gods.
"Full Moon" is an episode that shows the planning of the coming battle. Bjorn has a daring plan and Ivar is a great strategist: who will win the battle is the great question. Halfdan the Black promises to fight with Bjorn, but betrayal is very common in this show. Who is the father of Astrid´s baby is another question raised in this episode. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Full Moon"
Very Well Resolved Conclusion
Eleven returns Joyce´s house and the Demogorgons vanish. Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy expel the shadow monster from Will using heat. Meanwhile Eleven and Hopper go to the Hawkins Laboratory to close the Gate. Dustin, Lucas, Mike and Max decide to create a distraction to help Eleven and Hopper burning the tunnels, but Steve does not want to go. However Billy arrives at the house seeking out Max and beats Steve that is unconscious. But the kids sedate Billy and they use his car to head to the tunnels. They soak the spot with gasoline and burn the tunnels and the Demogorgons leave the gate as they planned.
"Chapter Nine: The Gate" is a great conclusion of "Stranger Things" with a very well resolved episode. Eleven now is Hopper´s daughter since Dr. Owens forged a birth certificate for her. The Gate to the Upside Down is closed. The Hawkins Laboratory is shutdown and Barb´s parents are able to give a funeral to their daughter thanks to Murray Bauman´s plan that worked. But the best moment is Nancy´s attitude dancing with Dustin in the Snow Ball. My vote is ten.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Nine: The Gate"
The Invasion Begins
The Demogorgons invade the laboratory killing everybody inside and Joyce sedates Will that is connected and giving information to them. There is a blackout locking the laboratory and Hopper and Bob head to get the power and systems back to let Joyce, Will, Mike and Dr. Owens leave the security room. Meanwhile Dustin, Steve, Lucas and Max meet Nancy and Jonathan at the laboratory front gate. Soon Joyce, Will, Mike and Hopper join them and they head to Joyce´s house. But the Demogorgons are hunting them down.
"Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer" is another great episode of "Stranger Things". Unfortunatelly Bob that was growing in the show is killed by one creature. Eleven will certainly meet the group at Joyce´s house and help her friends to destroy the creatures. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer"
Totally Unnecessary Episode
"Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister" is a totally unnecessary filler episode of "Stranger Things". The story of Eleven seeking out her laboratory sister is boring and out of the context of the series. She joins a goup of outcasts and can not distinguish the right from the wrong. The small time criminals attract her using her needy and she commits crimes in an absolute lack of common sense. The worst, the lead story is left in a cliffhanger episode and the sub-plots are totally forgotten. My vote is six.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister"
Will and the Shadow Monster
Will is sent to the hospital in the Hawkins Laboratory but the doctors can not find a reason for his pain. Murray makes many copies of the tape to send to the newspapers. Meanwhile Dustin and Steve find that Dart has escaped from the basement digging a hole out. Bob joins Joyce in the hospital while Dr. Sam Owens shows Hopper the size of the Gate. Will awakes with no memories and Dr. Owens finds that he and other hosts are connected to a hive through a virus. He discusses with the other scientists how Will´s brain has been affected by the shadow monster. Steve, Dustin, Lucas and Max use pieces of meat as bait expecting to catch Dart in the junkyard. But the creature comes with other Demogorgons and trap the kids in the bus. Out of the blue, they return to the tunnels to attack the soldiers that had been sent there based on Will´s information.
"Chapter Six: The Spy" shows Will completely controlled by the shadow monster. The fate of the soldiers indicate that the facility will be attacked by the Demogorgons and Hopper, Joyce, Bob, Mike and the others will be in danger. Steve has become a nice charater in the end. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Six: The Spy"
One of the Best Episodes
Hopper is trapped in the tunnels and can not find anyway out since the hole he made has been covered by wines. Meanwhile Jonathan and Nancy seek out Murray´s home to disclose the truth about Barb using also the tape recorder. Lucas tells to Max what happened to Will when he vanished, but she does not believe in his words. Bob comes to Joyce´s home and notes that Will´s drawings are indeed a map of Hawkins and they find Hopper´s whereabouts. Dustin traps Dart that has grown up in the basement and Steve helps him. Terry tries to communicate with El. Joyce and Bob rescue Bob and scientists from the Hawkins Laboratory help them to leave the tunnels.
"Chapter Five: Dig Dug" is one of the best episodes of "Stranger Things".The story is well written and has many unforgettable moments. Will is totally connected to the shadow monster, sharing feelings with the Upside Down world. Bob is becoming an important character in the story and Dr. Sam Owes does not seem to be a bad guy. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Five: Dig Dug"
Will and the Shadow Creature
The shadow creature enters into Will´s boy and Joyce finds him motionless on the fields. Dustin, Mike, Lucas and Max join them. Will does not want to be warmed up on the bed. Will draws to communicate with his mother. El returns to Hopper´s cabin and they have an argument. She breaks glasses and windows and while cleaning the mess, she finds files hidden by Hopper including her mother´s. She tries to contact her and finds her name is Jane. Nancy and Jonathan go to the park to meet Barb´s parents and they are abducted by agents and are taken to the laboratory. At Hawkins Labs, Dr. Owens explains why she shall not tell what happened to Barb to anyone. However Nancy records his words in a tape-recorder. Will draws many drawings and Joyce discovers they are a puzzle. She joins them and finds a network of tunnels. Hopper decides to go to the place with rotten pumpkins to seek the tunnels. Meanwhile Dustin finds how big Dart is.
In "Chapter Four: Will the Wise" many things happen with many characters. The size Dart is impressive and it is funny Dustin´s mother seeking out her cat while Dart eats it in the bedroom. The plan of Nancy and Jonathan may certainly bring trouble for them. Hopper dangerous exploration of the tunnels is a great ending. My vote is nine.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Four: Will the Wise"
The Slug from the Upside Down
Dustin finds a slug in his garbage and believes it is a pollywog. He calls the creature Dart and becomes obsessed for her. Bob tells to Will that he had nightmares in the past and only resolved his fears the day he faced his fear and asked to go away. When Will sees Dustin´s creature, he recalls the slug he had spat out in the bathroom. Barb convinces Jonathan to tell the truth about Barb's fate to her parents. Will has another episode and decides to face the shadow monster in the Upside Down.
"Chapter Three: The Pollywog" shows basically Dustin and his pet Dart. What will happen to Will that decided to follow Bob´s advice is the great question to be resolved in the next show. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Three: The Pollywog"
The Halloween Night
Eleven recalls how she escaped from the Upside Down and met Hopper. She asks him if she can dress like a ghost to go trick-or-treating but Hopper tells that it would be too dangerous. He promises to bring candy for her and watch a scary movie with Eleven. Hopper heads to investigate the mystery of the rotten pumpkins. Nancy wants to tell to Barb´s parents that she is dead, but Steve warns that it would be a problem for her with the government. Dustin and Lucas invite Max to go treat-or-treating with them, Mike and Will that are dressed as the Ghostbusters. Nancy gets drunk in a Halloween party and tells Steve that she does not love him, and Jonathan drives her home. Will has another vision of a monster in the Upside Down.
"Chapter Two: Trick or Treat, Freak" shows the Halloween night of the characters of "Stranger Things". The best segment is the episode of Will in the Upside Down and the mystery is the rotten pumpkins. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): "Chapter Two: Trick or Treat, Freak"
Hilary and Jackie (1998)
Technically Beautiful with Great Performances
"Hilary and Jackie" is a film technically beautiful, with magnificent cinematography and music score and top-notch performances, highlighting the lead actresses Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths. However the screenplay telling the personal life of Jacqueline du Pré from the perpectives of each sister does not work well. Jacqueline du Pré is depicted as a selfish and spoiled woman and it is impossible to the viewer to care to the character shown in the film. Consequently the film has no feelings despite the performance of Emily Watson and looks like a tragic soap-opera. My vote is six.
