My hobby is watching and collecting movies on VHS and DVD. On 17 June 2003, I found the IMDB site through an indication of a friend. My first review was "Anazapta" and since then, when I finish watching a movie, I write my personal opinion about it.
I am eclectic, but my genre number 1 is horror. I see between 800 and 900 movies per year, including TV series ("Sex and the City", "Angel", "Buffy", "Six Feet Under", "Lost" etc.).
My favorite movie is "Casablanca" and it is hard to point out my favorite director, actor and actress. I usually do not read any review before seeing a movie, in order to be not influenced by the critics.
I am trying to list my favorite movies alphabetically ordered, but this list may change:

Charming, with a Different but Silly Concept, but also Flawed with an Awful Conclusion
In a near future, many people wear a timer implanted in their wrists by matchmakers to find their soul mates and true love. The twenty-nine year-old orthodontist Oona O'Leary (Emma Caulfield) is worried about her future since she cannot find her true love. When she meets the twenty- two year old supermarket cashier and musician Mikey Evers (John Patrick Amedori), his timer shows that they will be together in four months and she falls for him.
Oona lives with her stepsister and best friend Steph Depaul (Michelle Borth) that works as receptionist in a nursing home. When Steph meets the widow Dan (Desmond Harrington) that does not wear a timer, they start seeing each other. Meanwhile Oona finds that Mikey's timer is fake and she is affected by her discovery. The birthday of Oona and Steph is on the same day and their mother Marion Depaul (JoBeth Williams) invites Mikey and Dan to the party. On the eve, Oona and Steph decide to remove the timer, but when Oona is ready to take it of, the timer is activated by someone who has just implanted it. Who could be her soul mate?
"TiMER" is a charming romantic comedy with a different but silly concept, but also flawed with an awful conclusion. The idea would be acceptable in a future or a near future, but even Oona's father had implanted a timer when she was born meaning thirty years ago. The perfect message would be with Oona daring to love Mikey free of her mother's oppression for using the timer and Steph and Dan together. Further, there are several questions raised along the story without answer. For example, has Oone reconciled with her father? Did he like Mikey's CD? What has happened to Steph and how would be her relationship with Oona if she stays with Dan? My vote is four.

American Gothic: Pilot (1995)
Someone's at the Door
In Trinity, South Caroline, the boy Caleb Temple (Lucas Black) is celebrating his birthday with his deranged father and his beloved disturbed and traumatized sister Merlyn Temple (Sarah Paulson). Out of the blue, she starts repeating over and over "someone's at the door" and her father tries to kill her. Caleb flees and brings Sheriff Lucas Buck (Gary Cole) and Deputy Ben Healy (Nick Searcy) that arrest his father. However Ben accidentally witnesses Lucas breaking Merlyn's neck in her room and blaming her father for the death.
Caleb goes to the hospital and the alcoholic Dr. Matt Crower (Jake Weber) examines him. Lucas comes to the hospital expecting to adopt Caleb and does not allow that the sheriff takes custody of the boy. Then Lucas goes to the jail and Caleb's father mysteriously commits suicide. Meanwhile Caleb's distant cousin Gail Emory (Paige Turco) comes to Trinity to take custody of the boy. Caleb receives messages written in blood telling him to go home and he goes and meets the spirit of Merlyn that shows that their mother was raped by the sheriff. Lucas uses the schoolteacher Selena Coombs (Brenda Bakke), who is his lover, to control Ben. Gail and Matt go to Caleb's house trying to rescue the boy from Lucas.
"American Gothic" is a cult series from the 90's with a dramatic supernatural story. I saw this series on cable TV and now almost twenty years later, I have just bought the DVD box to see it again since I do not recall it in details. Lucas Black has an impressive performance in this "Pilot". My vote is nine.

Fading Gigolo (2013)
Deceptive Movie That Is neither a Comedy nor a Drama
In Brooklyn, the bankrupted owner of a book store Fioravante (John Turturro) is forced to close his family business. His best friend Murray (Woody Allen) tells that his dermatologist Dr. Parker (Sharon Stone) dreams on having a threesome and would pay a thousand-dollar to have with her friend Selima (Sofía Vergara). Murray proposes to be Fioravante's gigolo and they start a male prostitution business.
When Fioravante meets the Jewish Avigal (Vanessa Paradis), who is the widow of a rabbi, they fall in love with each other. But the Jewish Dovi (Liev Schreiber) loves Avigal and will make life difficult for Murray.
"Fading Gigolo" is a deceptive and pointless movie that is neither a comedy nor a drama. Indeed the story is not funny or dramatic and does not have any message in the end. Further, John Turturro as a sex symbol for lonely women seems to be a problem of middle-age crisis of John Turturro that uses the movie to satisfy his ego. What make this movie worth are the beautiful Vanessa Paradis and Woody Allen. My vote is four.
Title (Brazil): "Amante a Domicílio" ("Lover at Home")
After commanding a successful rescuing mission of hostages from pirates in a ship, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) meets Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) very upset since Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) had different objectives from his. Nick explains that he does not trust anybody but discloses the latest top secret project from SHIELD called "Operation Insight" that will launch three aircraft carries to the space linked by a satellite to protect the world. There is an attempt against Nick by the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Nick goes to Steve's apartment and delivers a flash memory to Steve. He tells that SHIELD is compromised with infiltrated HIDRA agents; then Nick is badly wounded by three shots and goes on surgery.
Secretary Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) asks Steve why Nick was in his apartment but he refuses to tell. Soon Steve is considered traitor and hunted down by the SHIELD agents and he teams up with Natasha and Sam "Falcon "Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Now they investigate the reason why Nick was chased and they discover a lethal secret plotted by the HIDRA.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is a highly entertaining adventure with non-stop action. The predictable story is not bad and the special effects are top-notch. Chris Evans seems to be a juicer but is a great Captain America; Scarlett Johansson is Scarlett Johansson and there is nothing else to say; Falcon has great lines with humor; Emily Van Camp is cut and the villains are great. I am looking forward to see evil The Twins against the hero Captain America. My vote is eight.

Waste of Time
The Asher family buys an isolated manor where a tragedy happened with the previous owners, the Morello family, when the father and his three children died. The only survivor, the pediatrician Janet Morello (Jacki Weaver), sells the house to Alan Asher (Brian Wimmer) and his wife Emily (Ione Skye), and they move with their children, the teenagers Evan (Harrison Gilbertson) and Sara (Danielle Chuchran) and the girl Anita (Ella Harris).
The shy Evan meets the teenager Sam (Liana Liberato), who is abused by her father, and they start to see each other. Sam finds an old radio- like apparatus used to communicate with the dead in the attic and they decide to use it. Soon they learn that they have unleashed an evil force that is haunting them but Evan's parents do not believe in ghosts.
"Haunt" is a weak horror movie of haunted house where the only thing new is the apparatus that is a radio to communicate with the dead. The screenplay is boring and gives the sensation that something is missing to be a good story. Watching this movie is a waste of time even in a rainy and cold Saturday afternoon. My vote is three.
Title (Brazil): "A Face do Mal" ("The Face of the Evil")
Average Horror Movie
The nurse Kathy Jacquard (Sharni Vinson) travels to an isolated psychiatric clinic seeking a new job to forget her former boyfriend Ed Penhaligon (Damon Gameau). She is interviewed by the chief of the nurses Matron Cassidy (Rachel Griffiths) and by Doctor Roget (Charles Dance) and he asks Cassidy to hire her. Kathy befriends Nurse Williams (Peta Sergeant) that introduces her friend Brian Wright (Martin Crewes) to her.
Kathy feels attracted by the comatose patient Patrick (Jackson Gallagher), who is the guinea pig in cruel and unethical experiments of Dr. Roget. She also learns that Patrick actually feels the external stimulus inflicted by Dr. Roget. Further she finds a means to communicate with Patrick and soon she discovers that he has the power of telekinesis. Kathy decides to help Patrick that becomes obsessed for her. Patrick uses his ability to harm and kill everyone close to Kathy and she realizes that he is an evil threat that must be destroyed. Will it be possible?
"Patrick" is an average horror movie with a story that entwines a mad scientist in a hospital with telekinesis. The plot recalls those movies from the 70's and 80's and I found that it is a remake of an unknown 1978 Australian flick. This movie entertains but is absolutely forgettable. My vote is five.
Title (Brazil): "Patrick, O Despertar do Mal" ("Patrick, The Awakening of the Evil")
The Other Woman (2014)
Annoying and Silly Comedy
In New York, the successful lawyer Carly Whitten (Cameron Diaz) is in love with her handsome boyfriend Mark King (Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau) and she expects to introduce him to her father Frank (Don Johnson). However Mark tells her that he needs to travel to his house in Connecticut since his housemaid has just reported a plumbing problem in the basement and he need to fix it. Carly decides to travel to meet him without previous notice and she finds that Mark is married with Kate King (Leslie Mann).
Carly returns to New York and on the next morning, Kate visits her at her job to get information about her relationship with her husband. They conclude that he is a cheater and befriend each other. Soon they learn that Mark has a younger girlfriend, Amber (Kate Upton), and they befriend her. The trio decides to team-up and plot revenge against Mark.
"The Other Woman" is an annoying and silly feminist comedy about a cheater and his three women his wife and two mistresses. Leslie Mann is an irritating and unfunny actress and it is impossible to laugh with her gags. Her dumb character ends president of several companies in a ridiculous situation. The wooden Kate Upton is absolutely inexpressive and also unfunny and not hot. The awful story and screenplay waste Cameron Diaz and Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau. The laundry or embezzlement of money is a mess impossible to be understood since Mark's partner is making money and happy with the partnership. Last but not the least, it is maybe the movie with greatest number of fake reviews in IMDb promoting it. When you see ten stars, click on the name of the reviewer and see how many reviews he or she has in IMDb. My vote is three.
Title (Brazil): "Mulheres ao Ataque" ("Women on the Attack")
The Truth About Emanuel (2013)
Sensitive and Touching Story of Loss and Friendship
The bitter and introspective seventeen year-old Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario) is a troubled girl that lost her mother giving birth to her and she feels guilty for her loss. She lives with her father Dennis (Alfred Molina) and her estranged stepmother Janice (Frances O'Connor) in a house in the suburb. Emanuel has not gone to college and works in a drugstore with her colleague Arthur (Jimmi Simpson). She uses to flirt with the teenager Claude (Aneurin Barnard) in the train she uses to go to her job.
When her next door neighbor Linda (Jessica Biel) offers Emanuel to be the babysitter of her newborn Chloe, Emanuel accepts the job offer but she does not see the baby that is sleeping. But Emanuel and Linda feel connected to each other and Emanuel visits Linda in her leisure time to help her with Chloe. When Emanuel finally sees Chloe, she realizes that her new friend is living a great illusion but she keeps her secret. When Linda dates Arthur, the touching truth about her is disclosed.
"The Truth About Emanuel" is a beautiful movie with a sensitive and touching story of loss and friendship. Emanuel and Linda are troubled women bonded by their losses. The beginning of the story is ambiguous and the viewer is never sure whether what Emanuel is seeing is her insane perception or reality until the moment that her stepmother visits Linda. I believe the water is a metaphor with the amniotic fluid that connects Emanuel and Linda and rebirth, but I did not understand the meaning of fishes. The performances are great and despite the bad reviews, the viewer may like it like I did. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): "A Grande Ilusão" ("The Great Illusion")
The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014)
A Bad Day in a Bad Movie
The grumpy Henry Altmann (Robin Williams) has been a man full of hatred since his older son died. He goes to the hospital for a medical consultation but his doctor is not in the office and the intern Dr. Sharon Gill (Mila Kunis) comes to see him. She brings his tomography and discloses to him that he has a brain aneurysm. The angry Henry cries out loud at Dr. Gill, who is having a bad day, demanding to know how much time he still has left. Dr. Gill reacts and tells him that he has only 90 minutes. Henry leaves the hospital and decides to make amends with his wife Bette (Melissa Leo), with his brother Aaron (Peter Dinklage) and with his estranged son Tommy (Hamish Linklater). Meanwhile Dr. Gill realizes that she made a huge mistake but soon she is informed how serious Henry's aneurysm is. She decides to seek Henry out on the streets of New York. Will Henry have time to fix his life?
With the sad news Robin Williams was found dead in his home in possible suicide, I decided to see his last feature. "The Angriest Man in Brooklyn" ironically shows the last days of an unpleasant character performed by Robin Williams. Unfortunately it is not a good movie, alternating a few insane moments that become funny and make laugh with a heavy and corny family drama wasting a great cast with Robin Williams, Mila Kunis, Melissa Leo and Peter Dinklage. My vote is four.
Title (Brazil): "O Que Fazer?" ("What to Do?")
Scars of Dracula (1970)
In the End, Evil Is Defeated
In a small village, the villagers decide to destroy Dracula (Christopher Lee) burning his castle to the ground. They protect their wives in the church and head to the castle, but evil wins and their wives are murdered by bats under the command of Dracula.
Sometime later, the womanizer Paul Carlson (Christopher Matthews) has one night stand with Alice (Delia Lindsay, who is the burgomaster's daughter. He is surprised by her father and flees from the town in a coach. He arrives at the village late night and the landlord of the inn refuses to lodge him. He seeks shelter in Dracula's castle and disappears.
His brother Simon Carlson (Dennis Waterman) and his girlfriend Sarah Framsen (Jenny Hanley) seeks Paul out and arrive at the inn where Paul was expelled. Nobody gives any information for them but the servant Julie (Wendy Hamilton) tells that Paul has gone to the castle. Simon and Sarah go to the castle and are welcomed by Count Dracula. Will they escape alive from the vampire?
"Scars of Dracula" is a violent movie by Hammer with Dracula. The director Roy Ward Baker explores the bright colors to make a gore movie. One of the best scenes in this movie is when Dracula leaves his lair crawling on the outside wall since the room does not have any other exit but the window. The actresses are beautiful and voluptuous and the special effects are reasonable for a 1970 movie. My vote is seven.
