The Knot (2012)
Enjoyable
This movie is a mix of everything... A bit of hangover, bridesmaid, Imagine Me & You, Love Actually... The story-line has nothing brand new, yet I think the writers have done an amazing job in branding all the bright-spots together and make this a pleasantly enjoyable movie. I also think the slow pace of the movie helps you to digest and treasure the wickedness and funniness of the script more, but it's certainly not the cup of tea for everybody.
As an amateur film maker I love how the footage from the Canon 5D adds an extra dimension to the movie without compromising on the image quality. The director have made use of clever camera placement which gives a documentary touch and bring a level of reality to the entire movie.
You May Not Kiss the Bride (2011)
There's a reason guy should not write a romantic comedy, because he will turn it into an action movie
I think it's fair to say guys are into bad jokes, hot girls, gun shoots and actions, which is what this movie is about... A mixed of everything guys like into a romantic movie, resulting in a complete cracker of a comedy. Well I think it's hard to call this a rom com because it seems that the main focus of the movie is about the action and jokes instead of the romance between the main characters. The script is laughable (and weird in a funny way) and its very clear it's being written by and for men, which is probably why I find it very funny to watch.
Conclusion: it makes a good passing time movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon, suitable for men who are being forced by their significant other to watch a rom com without suffering too much pain
Hijacked (2012)
Its a low budget action movie
This is a low budget movie with a typical hijack airliner plot. There is nothing outstanding about the storyline. The set is also poorly and unrealisticly made and it looks like all the action is taking place in a cheap downtown hotel rather than a private aircraft. The acting is also a bit one dimension, where good guys a tough, girls are pretty and bad guys are dumb and unlucky.
One bright thing about this movie is the hand-to-hand combat scenes. It is generally exciting although it can be a bit predictable.
Overall it's 3.5/10. I give them credit because it's a low budget movie. Watch it only if you can't find anything else to watch and keep your expectation down.
American Battleship (2012)
It's bad but I've seen worst
There can be many bad things to say about the film after watching Act of Valor and Battleship over the past few months. To list a few: stereo type navy seals, poor CGI and special effect, inaccurate uniform on non-essential roles, poor research on weapon systems on board...etc. However given the lack of budget for this movie it is an understandably foreseeable outcome.
Overall I think it can be worst, especially if you have seen Moby Dick (2010) in the past. At least the movie is shooting on board the real battleship rather than some mock up set inside a studio. For that I'd given the movie an extra star.
Rating 2/10. Pretty bad movie, special effect and storyline, however at least you get to see the real Iwoa Class Battleship.
Take Me Home (2011)
Good indie movie
Having recently finished a long road trip adventure by myself, it is great to see a movie about two 'misfit' people driving across America by pure coincidence.
There are great chemistry between the two leads, who are actually married in real life, and that brings a bit of authenticity into the movie. The script is well-written and some of the scenery are breath-taking similar to what you would expect from a long road trip across a continent. I like the wickedness in some of the dialog. I also like the fact that all famous actors/actresses keep their fame within their parts and didn't attempt to steal the thunder from the leads.
Overall 8/10
P.S: Most guys would probably find this movie boring...
William & Kate (2011)
Cheesy, VERY Cheesy
OMG I don't think I have seen a movie this cheesy before. Hallmark lives up to its name I supposed... From the young actors and actresses, romantic music, warm picture color, classy cottage and cheesy dialogs, this movie have it all.
It is weird to watch a movie about something you have already known, it is kinda like I know how it's going to end before I started watching it. As the end of the movie said: "This movie is INSPIRED by an actual event". This movie fulfill some of our (public) imagination about Will and Kate's love story, but perhaps more on the fantasy side of our imagination rather than what had actually happen.
Anyway I rate this movie 7 out of 10. It is a great movie if the guys are in the mood for a bit of laugh, or perhaps for teenage girls filling their mind with Prince Charming fantasy, or perhaps a bedtime movie for couples. Either way it's not too bad of a movie.
I Hate Valentine's Day (2009)
Not what I expected
In comparison to some of the romantic classics in recent years (eg. Titanic, Love Actually), this movie is a big disappointment.
The script itself is quite predictable. A romantic guy falls in love with a 'new age' type of girl who doesn't do long term relationship, who after a brief dating periods falls in love with the guy. Things don't workout during the middle part of the movie but at the end everything works out for good.
The casting is pretty bad as well. Judah Friedlander (30 Rock) and Rachel Dratch (SNL) seem to be completely out of their depth as they both fail to adjust from comedian roles to 'drama' supporting roles. Nia Vardalos over-acting is also a downside of the movie.
Overall I think this is one of those cheesy mid-week movie if you decide to stay at home with your partner. On the plus side for guys, 98 minutes is not that long...
Mean Girls 2 (2011)
I kinda like it
Mean Girls 2 is supposed to be the sequel of Mean Girl (2004). But apart from the school principle being cast by the same actor, this movie is by no means a copycat of the original movie.
The movie itself is fairly predicable. A girl moved into a new town, went to a new school and trying to stay low, only being sucked into a series of troubles and upset the 'queen'. There are quite a few jokes in this movie, however whether I am not sure whether they are caused by intention or by crappy script writing. Either way, I can't stop laughing during the whole movie.
Overall I am presently surprised by this movie. Before I watched this movie I thought to myself an IMDb rating of 3.4 would means disaster, and I am fully expected myself to stop watching it after 15 mins, and I am wrong. I think this is an average weeknights movie and is one of those movie for 16 yrs old girls or couples. Don't expected too much and just enjoy yourselves for 1.5 hours of laugh.
You Again (2010)
Another oh-no-i'm-not-the-bride movie for Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell portrayed Marni, sister of the gloom Will, in this movie. Marni goes to the same high school with the bride, Joanna (by Odette Yustman), who is the head of high school princesses, while Marni is basically a geek. Marni, who have since turned into a beautiful VP for a PR firm in NYC, found out Will is marrying 'the Joanna' when she is flying back home and eventually decided to stop the wedding in order to save her brother from a horrible mistake in her view.
There are a few funny moments in this film, like the 'mothers' were suffering from the same kind of problem and so does the grandmas, Marni got arrested on the plane by Dwayne Johnson and the grandma's teeth incident. Overall it is not LOL type of humor but it's more of a witty kind of fun. It's an okay movie for a weekday night at home, just don't expect anything too funny from this movie.
2010: Moby Dick (2010)
Awful, just awful
For viewers who have personal interests in naval operation, this will not be the movie for you. This movie is full of inaccuracy in portraying submarine operations. For instant, the submarine in the movie has so much space inside that it is comparable to USS Enterprise; None of the seamen (other than the captain) wear their ranks on the work rig; Surface out of nowhere and 'kidnap'two scientists out in the ocean; Fire a torpedo without a guiding wire; Emergency surfacing the ship at 90 degree angle...etc. Perhaps the producers/scriptwriter should have done some research and talk to retired submarine communities before attempting making such movie.
In summary: Awful, just awful
