Quantum of Souless
Quantum of Solace is the 22nd Bond film to be released from EON productions and sadly it is the very worst. Im a huge Bond fan and the Bond film before this (Casino Royale) is one of my favorites but this was one huge disappointment to say the least.
The film starts by breaking a tradition. Since 1962 every Bond film opened with the famous gun barrel shot. Not here.
We open with a car chase. Bond speeds through Siena, Italy with some cargo in the trunk. Its Mr.White. This very first scene is incredible. Incredible that a Bond film can open with such a horribly edited chase. Cut after cut. It looks very unprofessional but this is just a taste of things to come. It also has the villains shooting Bond dead on but nothing will hit him. Clique. It then goes on to the opening titles and song. The titles by MK12 are ugly and the song is sung horribly but the music itself is good.
We go to M and Bond interrogating Mr.White. We are about to find out what the organization "Quantum" really is but then Ms bodyguard Mitchell turns to be a double agent and Mr.White escapes. Bond chases Mitchel and kills him and we get some more choppy action. The hand held camera known a "shaky cam" gets really annoying and hard to watch. Bond later kills a contact named Edmund Slate and meets a girl named Camille. She is cute but very dull for a Bond girl. Camille meets up with our main villain Dominic Greene (White? Greene? Reservior Dogs anyone?). Greene looks more like a crack addict than a Bond villain. The worst villain of the series I must say. His henchman is named Elvis. He looks just like Jim Carry in Dumb and Dumber. Greene is helping General Medrano who is betraying his people. Greene wants Camille dead but Bond rescues her and there is a boat chase. There are great boat chases in From Russia with Love, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun and The World is Not Enough but now we got yet another choppy action scene. The villains shoot all over the place again and they don't hit Bond...again. It all looks horrible.
We meet up with Felix Lieter in a meeting with Greene. We learn that Greene evil scheme involves Bolivian oil or so we think. Its really water. We need Bond for that? Bond then crashes Quantums meeting at the opera. I had hopes for this scene but we get...yet again...another action scene where the editing is crazy. This is the worst one yet. It moves so fast and it even looks like parts are missing. Can we get someone who can film action? Or knows enough to keep the camera on it.
Later Bond gets the help of Mathis and a girl named Fields and she reminds me of Molly Ringwald. Her full named is Strawberry Fields but we can only see her full name in the end credits! Why?
Bond is upset over the death of Vesper from Casino Royale but I guess he gets over it because he has sex with "Fields". Later at Greenes party he chats with Bond an Camille. The dialog is rather dull. Fields trips Elvis down the stairs. I guess its supposed to be funny. M is on Bonds case throughout the movie. All she does is complain and complain. It get really annoying after a while.
There is a homage to Goldfinger in this film buts its really a dead giveaway During the opera scene there is one homage to The Spy who Loved Me. Die Another Day did that already. Why are we doing it again? Is that a homage to Die Another Day? Hmmm. There is another scene I don't get. After one of Bond accomplishes is killed (I wont say who) Bond has a touching moment and then it cuts to Bond throwing him in the trash! Did he think the cops would think that he was robbed killed and put him in the trash? Odd...very odd.
Another one of Bonds accomplishes is drowned in oil but the villains manage to bring her to the hotel not spilling a drop anywhere. Aperenty nobody got suspicious of a bunch of guys bringing a dead girl covered in oil to a hotel! It makes zero sense. There is a plane shootout that is really poorly edited again. We come to the finale of the film witch involves a hotel in the desert(?) that has explosives all over the place. There is more really bad "action". The film end with Bond letting Greene go in the dessert with only a can of oil to drink. Bond has killed many times in cold blood before but this is the first time he has tortured anyone. Is this James Bond or the Punisher?
The film ends with Bond alone and depressed. Then the gun barrel comes on at the end with Bond walking like he has to go to the bathroom and the gun sounds like a toy.
QOS is a horrible, ugly, dull, boring film. Craig is a good actor but I do not care for him Bond at all. The directing, filming and editing is some of the worst I have ever seen. Bond is becoming a very dull and generic thug rather than a suave, sophisticated spy. Casino Royale is excellent but what happened here?
