Rogue One (2016)
If you are not a star wars fan it's unlikely this will convert you,as a stand alone the characters are too bit part and forgettable and as an episode it's redundant action and does little to meaningfully expand the universe and story. I have seen all the episodes but force awakens so far and I admit not a huge fan though as a child I was definitely sucked into the world. For me this is a forgettable star wars episode which I neither love nor hate.Visually it looks the part but for me it lacks impact, the characters left very little impression on me and action sequences are not tense if you don't care about the characters outcomes and know basically whats going to happen in the end, I quite liked Mendelson as the main villain and the final scene setting up new hope was a nice touch which did give me a bit of excitement and a blast of nostalgia reminding me why I enjoyed the first trilogy as a yout, overall it is mostly a bloated battle sequence with a foregone conclusion and I was pretty bored checking my watch throughout the movie.
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Good for kids...maybe?
This is a well animated film, the kid does have a punchable face though overall good, the music is pretty good too, McConaughey also OK, that's not enough to elevate this beyond an average kids film.
The plot is simple and very very formulaic I don't mind this too much it's something I can forgive entirely but so much about this film rubbed me the wrong way, I found the characters annoying and corny, the jokes were mostly not funny and the dialogue was cringey. The sappy ending were he defeats his grandfather in centipede form with a cheesy monologue and guitar strum made me want to puke. I'm surprised by the critical acclaim, outside of the few positives I mentioned you are not left with much. It's not terrible, OK for kids I suppose but I could think of a dozen better family films certainly not up there with the best
Shocking - if you never played the game you will find this unbearable
As a former player of WoW, Reign of Chaos + Frozen throne I definitely recognised before any official announcements of the movie that there was potential for a great set of films from the universe mostly from the story I saw in the old real time strategy game of the early 2000s, therefore I see it as a wasted opportunity but Im not a fan to the point were I care, what does annoy me is reading positive reviews from something which is clearly bad as water is wet.
I'm not worked up about any kind of plot changes or unfaithfulness, I wouldn't have noticed, I didn't recognise the story so i just went in with the eyes of someone who was somewhat familiar with the universe from having played those games some years ago.
The visuals were good enough and I was impressed by some of it in a weird way, however I think they obsessed over trying to make the orcs and cities look EXACTLY like the art-style in the game and it really does suffer for this in my opinion and surely for anyone who isn't into the games at all because it looks very plastic. I am not a LOTR fan particularly but that even though its like 15 years older on a lesser budget looks way better.
The unforgivable with this film is that it fails at inducing any kind of emotion or excitement, I did not care about anyone and felt no type of way at any of the plot revelations, my emotions were flat throughout, I laughed a couple of times at just how bad some of the dialogue was, the film although not a comedy tries and fails at being funny a couple of times I rolled my eyes at how unsubtle, embarrassing and box-tickingly redundant it was.
The plot is not that complicated to follow, the film does a poor job of explaining who anyone is, you are just left with your basic; wizard dude, evil traitor wizard dude, rogue type love interest, gnarly orc wizard dude and so on that is the extent of the development, why we should care about 2d characters with zero personality failing to generate any intrigue in there backstory, motives, who these people are, I will forgive a shallow or clichéd plot if there is interesting chemistry and characters but this film has literally no saving graces.
Really they could have summed up the entire plot of the movie in a 5-10min narrated introduction and cut out the majority of it moved on to something more interesting, it just abruptly ends and I was honestly thankful but this isn't a complete story and it doesn't warrant 2 hours
the dialogue was excruciating very cringe inducing, The acting was horrible, a few par/workman performances, nobody stole the show or stood out particularly, Patton was probably the best of a bad bunch, possibly because she is a babe even as an orc, I did not buy the love story and I really didn't care either but I think she did OK with such terrible writing and direction. Some of these actors where abysmal though, god damn this faux Shakespeare olde English clichéd, witless garbage.
We have seen it before, we have seen it done better, boring waste of time, I would recommend this for people who like loud noises, people who I wanted to trick into wasting there time for my own amusement (nobody) and 12 year old players of the games. This is action packed so if you like computer generated fantasy action with no weight behind it then I am simultaneously jealous of your low threshold for entertainment and concerned for your well being.
good effort, don't get too hyped up for it though
Looper is a stylish film with a solid cast and an interesting premise, it was entertaining but doesn't quite work, it delivered exactly what i thought it would so i'm not disappointed. It had some good action sequences however some of the action seemed a little ridiculous and ended up being unintentionly funny. There is some good humour in it though which i like it didn't take itself too seriously like say Inception which definitely worked in it's favour. Looper was visually impressive although that has come to be expected with this type of blockbuster flick in this day and age, it didn't fall short and not just the special effects I thought the costume design and sets and vision of the future world all looked great. In spite of all this it does fall short for me;it was a decent effort at the timetravel subgenre I have certainly seen worse but ultimately it wouldn't make my personal top 100. Looper has been Touted by the professional critics as the best thing since sliced bread, or Inception (the last Sci-Fi blockbuster critics had a raging erection for before having even seen the movie) well i prefer it to inception I was entertained and intrigued but left frustrated. don't expect watertight chronology or the film to add up in any way at all (why on earth would you? Is that even possible?).
The Game (1997)
This film has one saving grace that stopped me from giving it a 1 or 2 stars and thats that i was able to sit through it and the time didn't pass too slowly, for some people thats enough for them to rate a film 7 or 8 out of ten if its flashy enough but not me. With Michael Douglas, Sean Penn and an interesting concept I thought i'd be in for a decent watch but at the end I have to say it is way too contrived and unbelievable, it thinks its clever and symbolic but it isn't and this has the effect of being extremely annoying , the movie is ultimately pointless and i felt cheated im not a fan of Fincher at all extremely overrated, far from the genius he is billed by the public and media. I don't want to spoil the film but if anyone gave me that birthday present i would at the very least break their nose, the basic plot is that Michael Douglas, an extremely rich successful buisinessman clearly lonely and depressed is given a highly expensive gift which is a kind of "personalized reality game" for his birthday from his moronic brother Sean Penn, to enjoy this film you would have to suspend your disbelief to infantile levels which is OK for some films but this makes pathetic attempts at realism, I don't want to go into specifics as it's exausting those that have seen the film know what im talking about, I think it could have been much better if they had gone down the route that the film twisted away from but i predicted extremely early that it wouldn't ultimtely the film is very hollow and idiotic, sorry to those who thought it was a work of genius with a profound message. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
