A beautiful account of an extraordinary man
This film truly did surprise me. I have been fascinated by Jeffrey Dahmer for a long time, his story is so sad and tragic. He was such a complex character and yet nobody wants to know anything about what made him the way he was. This is a man that was trying to create his own zombies...and yet still, he was deemed sane.
Initially when I rented this film I was expecting a tasteless gore fest (something along the lines of what Ted Bundy turned out like), but instead, what I found was a beautiful, flawless creation showing a wonderful insight into what Jeff might have been like as a person. I guess that this film is probably better favoured by those who know a lot about the background of Dahmer. A lot of the criticisms about this film seem to come from those who want his gory life story laid out on a silver platter.
What this film does deliver is an excellent script with some amazing performances; especially Jeremy Renner in the title role. The cinematography is fantastic, very David Lynch...and the soundtrack is stunning. As for those people who have commented on the directors lack of knowledge about Dahmer, then I recommend checking out the official site and the featurette on the DVD. These people did their homework, and in my opinion made one of the best films of the past year or so. One I certainly enjoy watching repeatedly. If you are looking for a cheap blood and guts movie then this is not the film for you. If however you are looking for a tasteful account into the mind of one of the most tormented souls of our generation then I would most certainly recommend watching this movie!!! I give it a very well deserved 10 out of 10!! :)
