What becomes a legend most? IMDb editors Melanie McFarland and Mark Englehart talk about the notable films and television shows that have created and chronicled the origin stories of some of our favorite classic and contemporary heroes and heroines.
This collection of films made their debut at a film festival, introducing us to directors, actors, and actresses who were unknown at the time, but have gone on to critical acclaim.
Some are funny, others are touching, here's a selection of some of our favorite movie quotes that have been so popular, that quite often you can name the film just by hearing the line itself.
Music has always played a key role in a film, and when a great soundtrack captures the mood of film, it can continue to move us long after the credits have rolled. Here's a list of some the top soundtracks in the last 20 years.
These songs are some of the best and most popular songs that have appeared in films over the last 20 years. Some of the songs have remained more popular than the movies they were in.
The IMDb Editors' Top Actresses list is based upon the overall importance and impact these women have had on the last two decades of film. Note that "Top" does not mean "Best" and we realize there are some painful omissions here but, after much wrangling, we came up with the following rankings.
The IMDb Editors' Top Directors list is reflective of the consistent quality and entertainment value these filmmakers have brought to the screen over the past two decades. This was perhaps our most contentious list, and in the end, we realized we just couldn't focus on only 20 names. So after many re-takes, we came up with the following ranking of the top (not 'best', mind you) 25 directors.
Whether it be for violence, sexuality, religion, or political stance, these 20 films pushed the envelope enough that they were protested, picketed, or boycotted in one form or another. These films challenged us to look at the world in a new way, even if it made us a bit uncomfortable.
Here's our picks for the Top 20 actors and actresses, all under the age of 20, who we think have a promising future ahead of them. Please note, they are listed in no particular order!
From romantic dramas to historical films, the Top Dramas list was created on the basis of overall importance, popularity, and influence. Please keep in mind, "Top" does not necessarily mean "Best", but some films do tug at our heart-strings more than others.
The IMDb Editors' Top TV Series list is based upon the overall importance, impact and popularity these television shows have enjoyed for the past 20 years. Note that "Top" does not mean "Best" and after some discussion and enjoying a few microwaveable dinners with compartmentalized courses, we came up with the following rankings.
Animation was never just for kids. But within the past two decades, innovative work from studios such as Pixar, and creators including Hiyao Miyazaki and Nick Park, attracted moviegoers of all ages to theaters, and captured the imaginations of TV viewers young and old. On this list are 20 animated works that made their mark over the past two decades...but please keep in mind that "noteworthy" does not necessarily mean "best."
Think of these the greatest series that you probably should have watched when they were on. Perhaps they were ahead of their time, or too good for the TV networks that aired them. Some of them actually had a decent run, all things considered. At any rate, we present, in no particular order, 20 wonderful series that we wish had gotten more episodes.
We all have our favorite TV series, be they instant classics or guilty pleasures. But each of the series on this list left its unique mark on the television landscape, transforming their genres - and medium itself - in ways large and small. In no particular order, here are 20 that immediately came to mind.
Many experts have declared that we are living in the Golden Age of Television. If that's the case, these 20 series helped pave the way to greatness.
Contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of worthwhile series on television. But if many people declare TV to be detrimental to society, the bane of morality and the assassin of profound thought, feel free to blame the shows on this list. Shockingly enough, almost all of them are reality shows, many of which were brought to us by Fox.
In no particular order, these are twenty actors, actresses, writers and directors that we're excited to watch in the years to come.
While a great deal of attention is paid to child stars whose lives take a wrong turn after early fame, we're focusing instead on those who have translated that early fame into extended success. In no particular order, they are:
These entertainers have, both for better and for worse, have seen the biggest changes in the nature of their careers.
During the past 20 years, these movies have both captured the audience's collective imagination and inspired other filmmakers simultaneously.
The IMDb Editors' Top Horror films list is based upon the overall importance, impact and popularity these scary movies have enjoyed for the past 20 years. Note that "Top" does not mean "Best" and after some spine-tingling discussion, we came up with the following rankings.
Pow! Bam! We selected these 20 action flicks on the basis of importance, impact and popularity these rock-'em, sock-'em movies have enjoyed for the past 20 years. In the case of franchises, we went with the best in the series -- but do note that "Top" does not necessarily mean "Best".
A genre that can go from outer space to Middle Earth, we selected these 20 science fiction and fantasy movies based on importance, influence, and popularity. In the case of franchises, we went with our favorite in the series -- but do note that "Top" does not necessarily mean "Best".
The warm days of summer are behind us, but don't despair! These movies will help you get into the spirit of leaves turning as cooler weather prevails.
This list is based upon the overall impact these writers have had on the last two decades of film and TV. Note that "Top" does not mean "Best" and we realize there are some painful omissions here but, after much wrangling, we came up with the following, in no particular order:

Griping about the low quality of television content has become a popular pastime over the last few years, but, provided you view the medium with a certain level of discernment, 2010 was a great year for TV. Here are ten reasons why, in no particular order.
Unlike the Oscars, the Art Directors Guild breaks out its awards into three categories: Period Film, Fantasy Film, and Contemporary Film. Take a look at the films up for this year's honors - as well as our picks for who we think will win, and who we want to win!
The Golden Globe Awards may not be the Oscars, but with its free-flowing champagne, an anything goes attitude, and a history of surprising winners, it's often a lot more fun. Here's a look back at one of our favorite decades from Hollywood Foreign Press' annual fete: the stars, the fashions, and the parties from the 1990s. To see more photos from that period, check out Life.com's complete retrospective gallery.

Fashion always takes center stage on Oscar Night, providing an extra measure of delight to couture aficionados watching at home. But considering what a snooze-fest the actual Oscar telecast proved to be this year, the gorgeous gowns on Hollywood's leading ladies ended up being better than the main event. Here, we highlight some of our favorites as well as a few choices that were obviously created to bait the Fashion Police. Among the notable trends we enjoyed were the frequent appearance of bold colors, sparkle provided by elaborate beading and sequins as opposed to jewels, and several celebrations of vintage couture style.

They charmed us back then with a rare combination of inherent sweetness and natural talent that often went way beyond their actual age. These days though, we find that the years in between have been equal parts cruel, kind and tragic as we take a look at "Child Stars - Then and Now".

Here are some ideas/fantasies we've pondered for letting the series live on through character spin-off movies or shows, whether they be prequels, re-imaginings, or parallel universes. Some are fanciful, some might actually work - we'll let you decide which is which.

Born in Australia, Chris Hemsworth was a TV star in his home country before landing the small but pivotal role as the father of Captain James T. Kirk in the reboot of Star Trek. With less than five minutes on the screen, he went from just another handsome actor to a superhero -- literally -- by landing the lead role in Thor. His solid screen presence, muscular build, and most surprisingly, mischevious sense of humor, propelled him to the front of the crowd of young leading men sought after by Hollywood.
Though a superstar presence in recent years thanks to a certain insanely popular vampire series, Kristen Stewart has actually been working since she was eight years old, after an agent saw her perform in her elementary school's Christmas play. Ever since, there's been no looking back, and Stewart has become one of the most popular leading ladies of her generation.
