Vengeance In Style...
Let me warn you that this is not your average t-wood action film. If you are bored to death by those run-of-the-mill so called action flicks, THEN YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT. Panjaa is a stylish crime-action flick that hits hard on the age old question Loyalty or Moral Values?
Jai (Pawan Kalyan), an orphan, is raised by Bhagawan (Jackie Shroff). Now he is the most able and trusted man in Bhagawan's Gang. Munna, Bhagawan's son, kills Jai's childhood friend, Jahnavi (Anjali Lavania). Jai avenges by killing Munna. This ensues a war between the godfather and his prodigy. >> OK, let's get real, it IS an old plot. BUT in this film it gets a totally new, if not groundbreaking, treatment and tempo.
**ACTION FLICK WITH AN ATTITUDE**
The plot is important than anything else. Everyone is a player with their own expectations and misgivings. The film doesn't fall prey to prerequisite commercial elements or hero specific commitments. Unnecessary comedy tracks and other crap are done with.
**CHARACTERS CLOSE TO REAL LIFE**
The characters have life in them and contribute to the plot. A Don who have to survive his crumbling empire, his son at clash with his ego and reality, a damsel hopelessly in love, our guy Jai searching for a comfort in his lonely life This may be an action film, but you will encounter a bit of soul in it.
P.S Vinod (cinematography) deserves applauds for developing an immersive atmosphere in the movie. The action sequences are smart, powerful and enjoyable if not real. :) This movie will take you places and you will believe in them
Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is a big asset to the movie. He composed an elegant score for the movie. Instead of cutting through the movie, the songs are mostly situational.
Don't expect childish action sequences or punch lines, watch the protagonist working his way through the gangs in style and with wits. This film never claims a new plot or anything, but let the film show you a new and refreshing treatment to the plot.
A Jump To Nowhere
Starred by none other than Mahesh Babu and Directed by Srinu Vytla. This flick is expected to be the next big thing in Tollywood.
This movie can be Srinu Vytla's magnum opus. He took at least 3 years to prepare the movie. He polished Gopimohan's story to suit Mahesh Babu and worked nice comedy into it for the best of the movie.
Ajay Kumar (Mahesh Babu) is a sincere, stylish and hardened police officer hell bent on taking down an underworld kingpin, Don Nayar (Soonu Sood). He goes to Istanbul to track down the kingpin, where he accidentally meets Prashanthi (Samantha). He instantly realizes that she is the One. Oops, never expected that! :)
The rest is how he catches the villain and gets the girl. We will know later that he is in for revenge.
As, you can see, the plot never deviates from the formula proved one's. Find anything new in it? I don't :|
Ajay Kumar character is well developed. He is ravishing, witty, quick and can dodge a 100 bullets like they were pop corn. He knows what he wants.
Prashanti, played by Samantha is pure eye candy (congrats, Samantha, way to go!?). Chinmayi lend her voice to breath life into the character, just like in Ye Maaya Chesave.
Nayak (Sonu Sood) is supposed to be the dreaded villain. His screen presence felt kind of funny, taking every trap the hero has set for him.
Srinivasa Rao Kota, Brahmanandam, MS Narayana and other comedians are an asset to this film. But sometimes they tire the audience with their larger-than-life antics.
Shankar Narayana (Prakash Raj), is a good old MLA, loved by everyone in his constituency. His character is enigmatic and plausible in the screen. Proved time and again that Prakash Raj is an excellent actor.
The movie length is careful so as not to make the film boring. It mixes all the stereotype things that are reserved for Tollywood films and presents them nicely.
But eventually wears us out, making us wonder where's that awesome thing we are waiting to happen in the film....
Thaman, the new Music Director from the south, gave a very good score for the movie. Nevertheless, he has plenty of room to improve. But his songs are a hit and sets the peppy mood for the film.
The cinematography by K. V. Guhan, Prasad Murella is just awesome. If nothing else, this is enough to watch movie!! The team went to the extra edge to set high production values for the film.
Straight to the point : The movie is neither DARING enough to try out a new creative plots nor DASHING enough to break free of old weary stereotypes.
But it is to be noted that all the resources of this movie are nicely worked out.
So, instead we get a normal film in a very stylish, star studded 'package'.
100% Love (2011)
Not 100% Actually...
Balu (Naga Chaitanya) is a very bright student and revered by everyone in his college. His cousin Maha Lakshmi (Tamanna) stays at his house for studies. At first, Balu seems to strike off those immature 'infatuations' out of the equation. But chemistry ensues inevitably. But what happens next? This is an unusual college love story (coming-of-age?) given the context of Tollywood movies.
**A STRONG PREMISE WITH A WEAK PLOT**
PREMISE: The movie is about how egos could cloud one's judgment. And how even love looks like hate through the lens of ego. Balu thinks he should be the one, the Great Balu. But Maha Lakshmi has her own definitions.
PLOT: The film is how they deal with it, whether they can overcome the barriers of misunderstanding between them. The plot starts slow and eventually catches up in the Sukumar-Style. But again it loses ground and strays to covers so many aspects not directly pertaining to the protagonists.
Here Naga Chaitanya sets in comfortably in the cool college guy part, but he hardly relates to the indecisive, ego-centric Balu, trying to convey his love. Tamanna definitively caught the lime light. She has acted well beyond Naga Chaitanya's ability and a thumbs up for the movie. Others did their part.
Screenplay hardly keeps the film interesting. It is a big drawback; even the comedy element couldn't save the movie. At times, song sequences just jump in without much appreciation for the context of story. It takes a light-hearted approach barring any seriousness to the plot or characters
Very unconvincing graphics, even commercials have better graphics. The first song 'Aho Balo' graphics are just muddy are irritating (see for yourself). The cinematography is to be appreciated, it keeps the scene interesting.
Devi Sri Prasad is the man of the hour. His music is so unusual and refreshing. He proved that he is not in for the 'same-old-way-kinda-things'. It's a commendable step from producers to encourage such unconventional and peppy music. If it's not for the music, the movie would have been a mere entry in the CBFC catalog.
**THE HARD CONCLUSION**
Sukmar really wanted to do a unique coming-of-age love story. But luck has it that everything didn't fall in place. This is a kind of movie which you don't know if you want to recommend it to a friend or not. It's a kind of movie you can't decide if it worth a watch are not.
It's a love story with (interesting theme + bad story + very good refreshing music + some comedy).
"THIS MOVIE FARED WELL
BUT WHO'S IN FOR A AVG-MARK THESE DAYS
Green Lantern (2011)
As this is an origins story, we can expect the hero's background, his environment conditions - both physical and psychological. And mostly the events that lead to his attainment of super hero power and the impact it had on him and others around him... I am not saying that only this is a correct format -- in fact I strongly advice against any 'format / formula' based movies. But this is what movie tries to do in unsurprising, boring, illogical ways.
Our hero, Hal Jordan / Green Lantern (Ryan Reynolds), is reckless, irresponsible and a womanizer. But he has a rare talent in Air Combat flying. Okay lets think this over, does this sound any familiar? If you have seen ANY comic book based movie most of the traits look all too familiar. But the movie never claims to be original. Actually it may be a comic book based film cliché. Indeed we should appreciate (?) that movie mostly stays true to the comic book.
Hal Jordon's character is acceptable to the extent that he doesn't try too much to emphasize his irresponsible behavior or his sudden acquired sense of responsibility. Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), is his colleague, also they shared a intimate relationship but broke later, which is attributed to his irresponsibility. Carol Ferris character seems to be too casual, having almost no credibility in the plot.
You will be surprised to the reaction of Hal Jordans friend and Carol Ferris once they find out he has super powers. Their reaction? Nothing, really - they just say its cool. Thats it. They don't feel like real characters. But this kind of helped the movie pace through its course.
Peter Sarsgaard's character is dealt very good. His slow raise into a villain helped the script focus on the raise of our hero, Hal Jordon.
Mark Strong is Sinestro, a skeptical Green Lantern. He didn't indulge much in giving unnecessary inspirational speech to superhero as other stereotypes would have. He played an integral part in reflecting Hal Jordan state.
Ryan Reynolds had done a nice job. He's physique and everything just added up to his role. Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond is also convincing. In fact he's just in home with the whole creepy yellow villain thing. Marks Strong, as Sinestro is cynical and skeptical of Hal Jordan and he really convinced in screen that he is.
Being, a super hero movie, the film can be attributed to excellent production values. If there is one thing where Hollywood can't be beat, it is CGI... Green Lantern is no exception. But it would be even more awesome if Green Lantern Crops HQ Planet was given even more attention (remember Asgard in THOR ?). Other than that there are no complaints.
Do not expect original plot, dynamic characterizations or mind numbing twists... Just sit back and enjoy sporadic humor and the CGI, so that you may not be disappointed.
Its high time these new super hero movies should look beyond the commercial formulas and safe side tactics. This film would have been good if the calculated commercial elements are done away in favor of originality and creativity... But every super hero movie can't be awesome... or is it possible? We will see, as another sequel of Green Lantern is on its way!!
Different Concept - Indifferent Movie
An attempt by Bhaskar to steer free of usual 'boy-loves-girl' stereotypes prevalent in Tollywood. This film breaks RamCharan Tej's mass hero image and portrays him in a different angle. Film progresses as a flashback set in Sydney, Australia.
Direction by Bhasker is excellent as is his story.
This is a more of 'a Lover's story', than a 'Love Story'. This is the story of the lead actor's relationships and how they affected him in his life.
The lead actor, Ramcharan Tej believes long term relationships never work, a bitter conclusion from this past experience. He advocates short term love is best and one should enjoy it to the full while it lasts. But his philosophy is put to test after he meets Genelia.
Ramcheran tried his best to keep the movie interesting with his unusual arguments and advices. His character is fully developed and is heart of the plot. Genelia's acting is a disappointment. She made the first half of the movie irritating with her retard acting. Shazahn Padamsee's entry clears the mystery behind the lead character's unusual philosophy. She made her mark in the movie.
Even thought Brahmanandam's screen time is very menial he successfully gave some laughs, followed by Avasarala Srinivas and Vennela Kishore.
Rest of the cast is good and did there part.
--Cinematography by D Rajasekhar and Kiran Reddy is refreshing. They showed Sydney locales in a superb manner.
--Marthand K. Venkatesh, the Editor, should have made those hard choices. He failed to keep the plot more clear.
--Screenplay by Bhasker is.... well, not good. Scenes seems to come and go without proper connection - which is the foremost drawback. The audience were unable to connect to the 'feel' or the emotional frame of the movie.
The biggest asset of the movie is the catchy music and background score by none other than Harris Jayaraj. He did justice to the feel of the movie.
"Bhaskar has tempted audience with the fragrance but never allowed them to savor its flavor."
--Setbacks : Poor screenplay, slow but otherwise intriguing plot, lacking emotional feel.
--Assets : Music, exotic locations, Ramcharan's characterization.
Finally its worth a watch for its music, exotic locales and a different approach to a love story.
A Usual Family Entertainer : Nothing New
This a usual family entertainer with all the glitz-n-glamor. Even though there is nothing new and any Telugu movie goer has seen a lot of plots like this before... this may end up a commercial hit. :)
Krishna aka Krish (Jr NTR) is a son of a billionaire, Mukesh Rishi. His girlfriend Kajal Agarwal asks him to help her friend, Samantha, by acting as her boyfriend. What comes next is the hilarious misunderstandings and extraneous fight sequences.
The plot sometimes losses ground and gives way to irrationality. Like when Sri Hari kidnaps (or extortion?) Mukesh Rishi, a multi billionaire, it seems that nobody misses him. How can a small time faction leader like Sri Hari kidnap a billionaire?
The heroins, Kajal and Samantha (the much hyped one) did what every heroin in Tollywood movies would do and they did OK.
The comedy and the punch dialogs add a fresh air to the movie and is a refreshment from the fights.
The fights are extravagant and could be more creative. But the fight at the shopping mall seems to be a nice attempt. At the mall (and the mall only) Jr NTR quietly finishes off the goons , without even their knowledge!
Vamsi Paidipally, the director has successfully made the movie not to look like a drag. He added his expertise so as to make the plot look like a fresh lotus even thought its on stale waters.
In this film, Chota K. Naidu deserves an applaud because for his awesome Cinematography.
Conclusion : Don't expect anything new in this movie. But get ready for nice punch lines, hard hitting fights and nice comedy sequences.
Komaram Puli (2010)
Best Thing about this Movie is the Music, nothing else.
This movie has an excellent background score / music from A R Rahman, the Academy Award Winner. The sets/locations in the movie are lavish and beautiful. But there is nothing much to the film excluding the much hype that is built around it before release. So, the film should count on its music and Pavan Kalyan's charisma! The storyboard of the film is cluttered and songs almost cut through the story. The songs come at irrelevant times in the movie. At times, the dialogs of the protagonist are as if he is to beat the record for fastest talking! Anyway the songs are pretty awesome.
This is definitely not one of the best from either the director SJ Surya or the actor Pavan Kalyan. This movie could have been better.
