13 Reasons Why (2017)
Mediocre series with a good plot and dumb characters
This is a series with a really good plot, and it could've been so much better. When I finished the first episode, I wasn't impressed as much as people told me I'd be, but the story dragged me in and I really wanted to see what's going to happen. The basic premise/plot I could easily rate 10/10 because it's something unique so far. Then the next 7-8 episodes were good, some had really great moments, but, that was when I started to notice more and more that the story revolves around the main characters being especially dumb and doing irrational things. Especially Hannah, the girl who committed suicide.
Hannah turned into a HUGE drama queen a few episodes in, and she victimized herself with each story, sure, the first few she didn't ask for, but later it's just being forced. She has a good guy by her side, and she just keeps going for the bad ones, over and over again. Also she let her friend down - Jessica when she got raped, and then she victimized HERSELF again and she could've stopped it most likely. Then at the end she got raped by the same guy without even trying to fight him off, or even trying to say "No" or "Stop", she was just lying there feeling sad for herself.
Then comes her tape with Clay(tape 11) and Mr.Porter (tape 13), where I was already pretty much mad, because neither of them actually had ANYTHING to do with her suicide. She could've fixed it all when she was kissing with Clay, but no, she told him a lot of bad things and made him go away and then victimized herself and blamed Clay that he should've stayed and said god knows what, and every normal person would leave if you told him what she told Clay. And worst of all is that Clay actually believed that he was wrong, like what even?! And earlier when he asked Tony if he's the reason Hannah killed herself, Tony said that he is. I could never understand why.... It was actually all Hannah's fault.
Similar thing happened with Mr.Porter, she told him that she got pretty much raped, but when he proposed to call the police and her parents, she said no. Then he asked her for the name of the guy who raped her, and she didn't want to say. Then when he tells her that there's only one more option left - to move on, she gets angry with him. Then when she left, she BLAMED Mr.Porter for not going after her, just like she blamed Clay for leaving.
Basically in no way was it Clay's fault, or of the few people who are on the tapes at all, if it were true then half of us would've probably killed ourselves when we were in high school. There are some people who did small stuff, like Zach, who was just an idiot, or Alex and Jessica who just pretty much stopped being close friends with her and got into a relationship, and that was a problem for Hannah, and I can bet that those things happened to all of us.
Pretty much by the end of the series, from episode 9 or 10, I was really angry and was commenting about the stupidity of the characters with my girlfriend while watching it, and she thought the same. My being angry at the series had to do with Clay blaming himself, and Hannah being a drama queen and blaming everyone else except herself, and it was actually all her fault. So by the end I was actually glad that she killed herself, I couldn't even stand her "deep talks" anymore.
The only likable characters in the series were Jeff, Skye and Tony(Tony not all the time however). And to quote Skye: "Suicide is for the weak!".
So yeah, a mediocre series with a good plot, but everything else wasn't so great. I wasn't sure how I'm gonna rate it, 4 or 5, but since I was actually mad at it, I decided I'll go with a 4.
And in the end, I don't think that this in any way supports or glorifies suicide. Only thing it supports are series with dumb and irrational characters.
