"Super" is a SUPER Dark Comedy..
Me and a few of my friends had just recently watched Super. We saw it on demand and decided to order it. We watched the preview and though it was gonna be like another "KIck-Ass" movie, but it wasn't. It was much, much different.
Kick-Ass was praised for taking a realistic look into the "superhero" genre, but after watching this, you'd think that Kick-Ass was down right absurd. Don't get me wrong, Kick-Ass was great, but Super was much more realistic, darker and even funnier.
Super is fairly simple: Franks (Wilson) wife Sarah (Tyler), a recovering drug addict leaves Frank for Jock (Bacon), the local dealer. Frank attempts to get her back, but fails. After a religious vision, he is convinced that it is his duty to fight crime, with his ultimate goal win back the drugged out Sarah and defeat jock. So he becomes the Crimosn Bolt, beating people with his trusty wrench for cutting lines to molesting children. Along the way, he meets Libby, a local comic book store clerk. Eventually, she discovers Frank is really The Crimson Bolt, and she becomes his "kid sidekick." The movie starts out like a quirky, yet dark comedy. As the film goes on, the film becomes darker and darker. The violence starts out tame, but as the movie goes on, it becomes bloodier and more brutal. Nonetheless, it still remains comedic, albeit very dark.
Super is a SUPER movie (see what i did there?). Its incredibly dark and brutal and may even disturb some. Nevertheless, its a darkly funny movie (I can't stress enough how dark this movie is)that takes a realistic approach to vigilante crime-fighting and succeeds with flying colors. Its available on demand everywhere, so please take advantage of this opportunity and SEE THIS MOVIE. You won't regret it.
Jackass 3D (2010)
Gross, Crude, Appalling, Dangerous........and Hysterical
This movie is great. The jackass team re-unites for what seems to be the last one in the series. They are getting older, and after seeing this movie, I'm surprised they are still in somewhat good health. You will laugh, cringe, and stare in awe at the spectacle that is Jackass 3D.
Well first off, its exactly what you would expect. No story, just stunts and pranks, all in slow-motion 3D. There are some hilarious pranks and stunts (midget bar fight) and some disgusting ones (Poop Cocktail Supreme). Knoxville, Lacy, Bam, Wee-man, Steve-O, Pontius, Jonze and Dunn are all back and better than ever.
For those who are weary about seeing it in 2D or 3D, its kinda hit and miss. Some stunts are great for 3D (especially the conclusion and bee-ball tether ball) and others do nothing to aid it. If you were to see it 2D, then your not missing anything. If you see it in 3D, then the extra 5 bucks will be worth it.
I don't have many complaints about the movie. The slow-mo may have been used a little too often, there is a little too much male nudity in my opinion, and some stunts are just flat out gross (Poop Geysers).
Overall, this movie is great. Its appalling, its crude, its grotesque and most off all, it will have you peeing your pants.
The Town (2010)
Not What I Expected....
When I first walked into this movie, i was expecting a regular crime drama action thriller, but man was i off. Now don't get me wrong, this movie had some pretty decent action scenes and shoot-outs. But if your walking into this movie thinking that its going to be your normal everyday action flick, then you are wrong.
The concept is simple, and seen in most movies of the same drama. Its a cat-and-mouse game between the FBI S.A Adam Frawly (Hamm)and the four bank robbers. (Affleck, Renner, Slaine, Burke). Its the typical "this-is-my-last-hit-then-Im-out-of-here" story. What makes this different is that MacRay (Affleck)falls for a women (Hall) who was actually the hostage they took during a bank robbery. This really ins't a spoiler since they reveal this during the trailer.
As stated before, this isn't a direct action flick. It has some scenes which are very entertaining, but the narrative tends to focus on the relationship between Affleck and Hall and how that affects the lives of everyone else involved. At the same time, Hamm is hunting them down, or at least trying to.
This movie is just overall great. I went in expecting big action scenes, but instead got a deep, character driven story that delves deep in the past of the main characters. This is NOT a bad thing at all. It is tense, emotional, and even has a couple of mildly humorous moments. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Tarantino Has Made Yet Another Masterpiece.
This film is outstanding. Only the mind of Tarantino can come up with something so exhilarating and exciting. Uma Thurman is great in her role as "The Bride", and the co-stars are fantastic as well.
The simplicity of the plot is what keeps you involved in the movie. The Bride (Thurman) was betrayed on her wedding day by the assassin team she was once a part of. Her entire family was murdered, and she was left for dead. She wakes from a long coma, and finds that the baby she was carrying is now gone, and now there is one thing on her mind.....revenge. And thats the plot....REVENGE. Its so simple but pulled off in such a way that it prospers amongst the others.
The movie has some of the most memorable fight scenes, and takes inspiration from Asian 70's pop culture. Its very unique, simplistic, bloody, violent, and in a way, darkly cynical and comical.....and yet, IT STILL WORKS! This movie is a gem that many don't take the time to watch because of its violent nature, but they should. Very rarely does a movie leave such a lasting impression.....GO. SEE. THIS. MOVIE.
The Ugly Truth (2009)
The Title Says it All
This film is.....ugly. It doesn't have many, if not any, redeeming qualities. Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler play there roles fine. Nothing bad, but nothing to run home about.
Abby (Katherine Heigl) plays a stuck-up producer of a news show that is failing. She is a romantically challenged, stuck up control freak, which often scares her dates away. Then one night Abby watches a show called "the Ugly Truth", which consists of Mike (Butler)giving dating tips for woman, in very crass terms. Abby is appalled, calls the show and complains, and things just get worse from there. The next day, she finds out that her boss hired Mike for a 3 minute segment for the show, thinking it will help with ratings. and from there they have to learn to deal with each other.
The story is shallow, you never really fell for the characters, and more times then not, you find them just flat out annoying. The movie is boring and unfunny. Its a shame to see such great actors/actresses in a movie this flat. The only real redeeming quality is that there is a HINT of chemistry between Heigl and Butler, and the fact that the movie is only 96 minutes long, is also a plus. (Although it was still too long for me). Whatever you do, try to avoid seeing this movie.
The Other Guys (2010)
Quite a Surprise.....
Walking into this movie, I wasn't expecting much. I was expecting Will Ferrell to be the funny guy here, but i was worried about Mark Wahlberg. He never seemed to be the kinda person to do a comedy, especially with the likes of Will Ferrell. But when i walked out of the movie theater, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film.
The film revolves around two desk jockeys (Ferrell, Wahlberg)who feel they should take matters into their own hands when they accidentally stumble into a crime that is bigger than the two of them could ever imagined. They must work together and solve the case, before its too late.
All and all, this film was good. Ferrell was great, as always, as a very literal desk jockeys with a dark, yet comical past. Wahlberg surprised me with his over-the-top hatefulness towards Ferrell. The whole supporting cast was good, especially Sam Jackson and Dwanyne "the Rock" Johnson, as high profile cops that deliver some of the funniest lines in the movie. Its action is solid, and so is the story. The movie kept me giggling and chuckling all the way through.
.....And thats the problem. Throughout the movie, i found myself just constantly chuckling and giggling, rather than busting out laughing. The one liners aren't enough to cause you to really "laugh-out-loud".
Anyway, this is quite a funny movie, and you won't be disappointed.
The Expendables (2010)
A Good OL' Man Movie
This is a movie that is meant for men, and i guess their teenage sons as well.....its action-packed, VERY load, bloody, violent and just an all around good time. Its fast pace keeps you glued to your seat, and leaves you in awe as you watch the constant explosions and visceral fight scenes. This movie is just an all around fun time.
Of course, it has a few flaws that hold it from greatness. First off, the camera angles are constantly changing, making some of the fight scenes confusing and maybe even hard to watch. The acting can be mediocre at times, and the plot is a bit shallow.
But all and all, who cares about this stuff. If you go see this movie, it wont be the story that hooks you, or the acting, it will be seeing all the big action stars causing explosions and kicking butt.
I believe that Michael Philips of the Chicago Tribune said it best: "If this movie had anymore testosterone, it would start to grow hair"
Please, do yourself a favor and go see this movie...you wont leave disappointed.
