The American (2010)
Those giving this film one star would't know a good movie if it slapped them in the face.
I understand going into a film with expectations and being disappointed but those who do not recognize a masterpiece when they see it should't bother taking the time to give a review. It's one of the main problems I have with this site. The reviews are highly inaccurate due to too many armchair directors who are brainwashed by Hollywood propaganda. Some of the movies with eight plus stars on this site baffle me when true cinema like this gets called "boring". Obviously , many people here don't know what they're talking about.
Some of the reviews say it's not a bad movie and praise some parts of the film yet give it a rating of one star. That makes no sense. It goes to show these people have no business rating movies. Just because it didn't have the lowbrow humor and nonsense action you've come to expect from the garbage producing mainstream doesn't mean it's not a good film. The people who gave this movie one star were probably the same people who gave Kick-Ass ten stars and don't know jack sh*t about cinema.
This movie has a certain film noir quality to it. It's mysterious and engages the viewer. I'll admit that some scenes are a little slow and if you aren't a thinking intelligent person you may lose interest. If that's the case you should stick to uncultivated action flicks with no redeeming value. The cinematography and acting are excellent. It's story is both beautiful and tragic. It shows the inner struggle of a man seeking atonement and refuge through love that's shrouded in ill repute and sin. It presents the conflicts of a soul seeking deliverance and searching for someplace or someone or something to call home. It perfectly contrasts an evil and dirty business with beautiful scenery and people. This is how movies are supposed to be made.
I would give this movie eight to eight and a half stars but gave it ten in this review to counter all the ignorant reviewers who don't know good cinema when they see it.
The worst movie I've seen recently
When I saw the previews for this film I was unimpressed and was absolutely going to skip it. However, after seeing some of the high reviews it got here at IMDb and elsewhere I thought I would give it a try and rent it. I am disappointed I spent a dollar to rent this film. It is by far one of the worst movies I've ever seen. If there was a movie responsible for the dumbing down of American culture this would be it.
First of all this movie is rated R yet panders to teenagers and young adults. It is appropriate for neither. The content and subject matter are immature even for the comic book culture. This movie is poor all the way around. Horrible acting, awful screenplay, dumb montages, and poor theme. I would recommend this film to no one. There are much more things worthy of your time. Read some real literature. Watch an actual film. This garbage of a movie will only make you dumber.
I am doubly upset by the fact that it gets such a high rating here and in my local newspaper the San Francisco Chronicle. In fact, I have been using IMDb for years now but only registered recently in order to bring this false rating down. This is NOT a good movie and should be rated accordingly. Wake up people! The fact that it has received the ratings it has is disturbing to say the least. Our culture is in danger when a film like this gets good reviews. It becomes all too clear when a movie like this gets approved for a sequel what America and our society is all about, greed and money over morals, decency, and ethics. People who like this movie have attention spans that can only be measured in nanoseconds or are not old enough to have seen this R rated film. I hold movies like this responsible for the dumbing down of America. The fact that it has such a high rating is a bad sign indeed.
