Definition from (http://www.allaboutphilosophy.org/):
Existentialism is a 20th century termed philosophy concerned with human existence, finding self, and the meaning of life through free will, choice and personal responsibility. The belief that people are searching to find out who and what they are throughout life as they make choices based on their experiences, beliefs, and outlook, without the help of laws, ethnic rules, or traditions. Listed below are a number of films which I feel address the human condition in a profound and ultimately, rewarding way. Gaining insight into ourselves and being able to express this with others through these films.

Only the lonely: A movie loners list.
(Definition from Wikipedia): A loner is a person who avoids or does not actively seek human interaction or prefers to be alone. There are many reasons for solitude, intentional or otherwise, and 'Loner' does not imply a specific cause. Intentional reasons include spiritual and religious considerations or personal philosophies. Unintentional reasons involve temperament, being highly sensitive, having more extreme forms of shyness, deep seated guilt, or various mental disorders.
There are different types of loner, including individuals that prefer solitude and are content to have very limited social interaction. The second type includes individuals that are forced to be isolated because they are rejected by society (Or, by circumstances beyond their control). This individual typically experiences loneliness. The first type does not feel lonely even when they are alone, at least, not in the same way as would a social person who found themselves isolated. However, these are very broad generalizations and it is not uncommon for loners to experience both of these dimensions at some point.

The concept of of a lonely hero (or antihero) is a recurring theme in film and is often the subject in popular culture.

Listed below are a number of films, with special emphasize on specific characters, that I feel not only relate to the above description but also, encompass, reflect, and explore characteristics of the loner's condition.

Film as inspiration.
Film as a celebration of the human-spirit.
Film as a window to the soul.
Film as a reflection of the human-condition.
Film as document.
Film as voice.

"By showing hunger, deprivation, starvation and brutality, as well as endurance and nobility, documentaries inform, prod our memories, even stir us to action. Such films do battle for our very soul."
- Theodore Bikel

It is my firm belief that documentary film not only plays a major role in informing, educating, and raising issues that affect us all on a global level but, documentaries also have the ability to profoundly affect us on an emotional level. I believe this emotional connection is an essential component when viewed in conjunction with statistics, facts or data. The symbiotic relationship between these two 'components' are, in my view, fundamental. It is the basis that creates the well-informed individual's need and empathy necessary in wanting to become involved, and instrumental in one wanting to make a positive contribution. It is in this regard that documentaries can prove invaluable.

The purpose of this list is to try and highlight important documentaries that address and relate to the connection between various facets of the human condition, man and nature, and the global issues that confront us - Past and Present. This is supported by the views, statements or quotes from all walks of life - From world leaders, scientists, activists, artists and documentarians, to the 'man-on-the-street'. This list is also an attempt to provide a multi-angle approach regarding those views. Though addressed, there is no favoritism nor bias in regards to ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, disability, or politics. This list is, however, primarily aimed at those, who have, and continue to support the positive in humanity. In striving to make the world a better place.

In it's form, I have tried to structure this list as a narrative. A journey from the vast unlimited expanses of the Universe to the vast unlimited expanses of Ourselves. All of which, I believe, are inter-connected and part and parcel of the cycle, we call, life.

The first thought that came to mind was, how does one possibly compile a list of 100 greatest movies of all time? What is the criteria that one should adhere to? Is it critical opinion, public opinion, popularity, box-office takings, historical significance, cultural impact, awards, ratings, greatest lists or surveys, or all of the above? The truth is, film-appreciation is not an exact science. Though I do not want to undermine critical opinion, but factually critical opinion and film rankings have constantly evolved and changed over the years. Therefor, any such calculation, regardless of any one or more factors, will never be totally agreed upon. If it were an exact science, that would mean, one's personal feelings regarding the value of a specific film, it's personal spiritual and emotional resonance would not apply to the individual but, determined by the calculations or opinions of others. Thus undermining the very principles of which this art-form is based on.

That is not to say there should not be any criteria compiling such a list. There will undoubtedly be various influential factors. It should however, not directly determine or solely govern a specific choice. It should instead, offer insight in helping to make that choice. Therefor, ultimately the 'criteria' of this list is a purely subjective view of some of the greatest films I've seen, and is not mean't to sway or determine the views of others.

And lastly, because all the films listed here are based on their own unique attributes, there is no specific order.

Part II of a trilogy of 100 of the greatest movies of all time.
After compiling the first list, it struck me that it would be criminal negligence on my part to neglect a number of films, that I feel, are deserving of being labelled as 100 of the greatest movies of all time. And, once again, after compiling this list, I was once again struck by the fact that I had failed to include a number of essential films. Therefor, not wanting to make one continuous list, I instead opted to make three separate lists. A concept based on the definition of a movie trilogy. Which is; a set of three works that are connected, that can either be seen as a single work or as three individual works.

The third and final installment of the 100 greatest movies of all time.
If I were to recommend 300 movies to myself, I can confidently state that all the movies listed in this trilogy would apply. Movies that have not only made an indelible impression but, continue to do so, even after repeated viewings. Yet, it would be very arrogant of me to think that others should or would agree, or try and force an opinion. After all, one of the great joys of watching movies is not only to have the freedom to make up one's own mind, but also the freedom to share that opinion.

(From Wikipedia): The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film is handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.

When the first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929 to honor films released in 1927-1928, there was no separate category for foreign language films. Between 1947 and 1955, the Academy presented Special / Honorary Awards to the best foreign language films released in the United States. These awards, however, were not handed out on a regular basis. No award was given in 1953, and were not competitive since there were no nominees but simply one winning film per year. For the 1956 Academy Awards, a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since then.

The Best Foreign Language Film Award is not presented to a specific individual. It is accepted by the winning film's director, but is considered an award for the submitted country as a whole.
