"By showing hunger, deprivation, starvation and brutality, as well as endurance and nobility, documentaries inform, prod our memories, even stir us to action. Such films do battle for our very soul."
- Theodore Bikel

Documentary film not only plays a major role in informing, educating, and raising awareness to issues that affect us all on a global level but, documentaries also have the ability to profoundly affect us on an emotional level. I believe this emotional connection is an essential component when viewed in conjunction with an objective analysis of all the facts and data that relate to a particular topic, subject, or event. A symbiotic & balanced relationship that can create, and propagate, the passion, empathy, and pragmatism, essential to making a meaningful humanitarian contribution. It is in this regard that documentary films can prove invaluable in changing our world.

The purpose of this list is to try and inspire, raise awareness, document, and provide for a multilateral and progressive approach to it's subject-matter. Specifically from a global perspective. This is supported by various documentaries, related IMDb Watch Now Video Links, relevant narrative-films & music-videos, Official Site Links, Amazon Book Links, and relevant external links that collectively address the universal connection between various facets of the human condition, man and nature, and the ongoing global issues that confront us all. This is supported by both; factual information and the views, statements or quotes from, among others; world leaders, philosophers, scientists, activists, artists, and the documentarians themselves.

Any conclusions regarding the issues or views expressed on this list (including those of the films and videos contained within) is left entirely to the individual's own analysis and interpretation.

Definition from (//www.allaboutphilosophy.org/existentialism.htm):

Existentialism is a 20th century termed philosophy concerned with human existence, finding self, and the meaning of life through free will, choice and personal responsibility. The belief is that people are searching to find out who and what they are throughout life as they make choices based on their experiences, beliefs, and outlook. And personal choices become unique without the necessity of an objective form of truth. An existentialist believes that a person should be forced to choose and be responsible without the help of laws, ethnic rules, or traditions.

Listed below are a number of existentially-themed films which I feel address the human condition in a profound, and ultimately, rewarding way. Gaining insight into ourselves and being able to express this with others through these films.

In reverse chronological order and purely subjective.

A special thanks to fellow IMDb users for their invaluable contributions, and thereby making this list a collaborative effort for all those concerned.

Only the lonely: A movie loners list.

(Definition from Wikipedia): A loner is a person who avoids or does not actively seek human interaction or prefers to be alone. There are many reasons for solitude, intentional or otherwise, and 'Loner' does not imply a specific cause. Intentional reasons include spiritual and religious considerations or personal philosophies. Unintentional reasons involve temperament, being highly sensitive, having more extreme forms of shyness, deep seated guilt, or various mental disorders.

There are different types of loner, including individuals that prefer solitude and are content to have very limited social interaction. The second type includes individuals that are forced to be isolated because they are rejected by society (Or, by circumstances beyond their control). This individual typically experiences loneliness. The first type does not feel lonely even when they are alone, at least, not in the same way as would a social person who found themselves isolated. However, these are very broad generalizations and it is not uncommon for loners to experience both of these dimensions at some point.

The concept of of a lonely hero (or antihero) is a recurring theme in film and is often the subject in popular culture.

Listed below are a number of films, supported by quotes, with special emphasize on specific characters, that I feel not only relate to the above description, but also, encompass, reflect, and explore characteristics of the loner's condition.

A special thanks to all those who have contributed to this list.

A character study is defined as the analysis or portrayal of the combination of traits and qualities distinguishing the individual nature of a person.

Based on the above definition; the primary focus of this list is to feature films which offer a profound insight into the personality of its characters, and who's characters are likewise, an essential component, or subject of a particular film. The success of which, besides the entire film-making process and the director's vision, lies very much in the hands of the performers, and ultimately, the individual viewer.

(From Wikipedia): The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film is handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.

When the first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929 to honor films released in 1927-1928, there was no separate category for foreign language films.

Between 1947 and 1955, the Academy presented Special/Honorary Awards to the best foreign language films released in the United States. These awards, however, were not handed out on a regular basis. No award was given in 1953, and were not competitive since there were no nominees but simply one winning film per year.

For the Academy Awards to honor films released in 1956, held on March 27, 1957, a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since then.

The Best Foreign Language Film Award is not presented to a specific individual. It is accepted by the winning film's director, but is considered an award for the submitted country as a whole.

Please note:

This list is in reverse chronological order.

The numbered Annual Academy Awards Specials, which precedes the Best Foreign Language Film winners and nominees, contains a link to IMDb's overview of that specific year's Academy Awards Ceremony. Individual film pages and other categorized winners for that particular year can also be accessed via these links.

Drug addiction, including alcoholism, is a topic often explored in film. Initially a taboo subject has now become a global problem of gigantic proportions, which cannot be ignored.

The intent and purpose of this list is to both highlight the number of ways cinema has addressed addiction throughout the years and, for the most part, the positive role it continues to play in raising awareness to this ever-increasing global issue.

*Please note: In keeping with the theme of this list; a number of drug-related documentaries have been included: Drug Related Documentaries.

Emerging from the Shadows...

A list of the greatest genre-defining film-noir movies and their pre-classical-period forerunners.

(Wikipedia): The film noir genre generally refers to mystery and crime drama films produced from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Movies of this genre were characteristically shot in black & white, and featured stories involving femme fatales, doomed heroes or anti-heroes, and tough, cynical detectives.

IMDb Link: Genre: Film-Noir.

The term film noir, French for "black film" (literal) or "dark film" (closer meaning), first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, was recognized by most American film industry professionals of that era. Cinema historians and critics defined the category retrospectively. Before the notion was widely adopted in the 1970s, many of the classic films noir were referred to as "melodramas". Whether film noir qualifies as a distinct genre is a matter of ongoing debate among scholars.

Although film noir was originally associated with American productions, films now so described have been made around the world. Many pictures released from the 1960s onward share attributes with film noir of the classical period, and often treats its conventions self-referentially. Some refer to such latter-day works as neo-noir.

a list of 100 titles
When initially deciding to create this list, the first thought that came to mind was, how does one possibly compile a list of 100 greatest movies of all time? What is the criteria that one should adhere to? Is it critical opinion, public opinion, popularity, box-office takings, historical significance, cultural impact, awards, ratings, greatest lists or surveys? Or all of the above?
The truth is, film-appreciation is simply not an exact science. It cannot be quantified solely through numbers and statistics, alone.

Though a number of films have deservedly remained consistent on greatest lists, and I do not want to undermine the importance of critical or public opinion but, factually, critical opinion and film rankings have constantly evolved and changed over the years. Influenced by the next generation of viewers and critics who determine what they feel are the greatest films of their generation, and those of the past (IMDb's Top 250 is a perfect example of this evolution). Also, many films that were once panned, overlooked, or were box-office failures upon release have, over time, been re-evaluated and have since found acclaim as overlooked or under-appreciated masterpieces. And, resultantly, these films have found their way onto greatest lists and surveys. And the same can be said for films that in their heyday were widely praised, only to lose their appeal over time.
Then, there are those films that for the individual viewer have never lost their appeal. Films that have made such a profound personal impact that they continue to resonate over the years, regardless of critical or box-office appeal, or, how many times a much-loved film is viewed by that individual.
It is therefor due to these and a myriad of other factors that an absolute in regards to a universal list of the greatest films of all-time will, thankfully, never be carved in stone or totally agreed upon.

Hypothetically speaking, if film were an exact science, that would mean one's personal feelings regarding the value of a specific film, it's personal spiritual and emotional resonance would not apply to the individual but, determined solely by scientific means. Thus undermining the very principles of which this or any other art-form is based on - the freedom of expression of both artist and observer.

That is not to say there should not be any criteria compiling such a list. There will undoubtedly be various influential factors. Those factors should however not solely determine or govern a specific choice. It should instead offer insight in helping to make that choice, by deriving at one's own conclusions from one's own examination and reasoning.
Therefor, having said that, ultimately the 'criteria' of this list is a purely subjective view of some of the greatest films I've seen, and is not mean't to try and sway or determine the views of others.

And lastly, because all the films listed here are a collective fellowship of films based on their own unique attributes - and therefor I cannot possibly justify one film above the other - there is no specific order.

The second part of a trilogy of 100 greatest movies of all time.
After compiling the first list, it struck me that it would be criminal negligence on my part to neglect a number of films that, I feel, are deserving of being labelled as 100 of the greatest movies of all time. And, once again, after compiling this list, I was once again struck by the fact that I had failed to include a number of essential films. Therefor, not wanting to make one continuous list, I instead opted to make three separate lists. A concept based on the definition of a movie trilogy, which is; "A set of three works that are connected, that can either be seen as a single work or as three individual works."

Returning for the last time.
The third and final installment of my ultimate 100 greatest movies of all time.
Though there are still a number of greatest films that have been excluded from this trilogy, if I had to recommend 300 movies to myself, I can confidently state that all the movies listed in this trilogy would apply. Movies that have not only made an indelible impression but, continue to do so, even after repeated viewings. Yet, it would be very arrogant of me to think that others should or would agree, or try and force an opinion. After all, one of the great joys of watching movies is not only to have the freedom to make up one's own mind, but also the freedom to share that opinion.

Australia's invaluable contributions to world cinema is without question. From early forerunners such as the world's first feature-length film - 'The Story of the Kelly Gang' (1906) and masterpieces such as 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' (1975) and ''Breaker' Morant' (1980), to modern-day blockbusters like 'Mad Max: Fury Road' (2015), are just a few examples of Australia's impact on the cinematic universe.

Based on research, the purpose of this list is to encompass a wide range of Australian films, from cult-classics and culturally significant films, to award-winners and modern blockbusters. Films that not only typify the cinema of 'Down Under' but are also representative of it.

This list in reverse chronological order and includes documentaries & shorts.

Since the dawn of film-making 'The Chase' has proven itself immensely popular among film-makers and audiences alike. A simple but highly-effective plot-device that guarantees a steady flow of non-stop action and forward-moving momentum that is still used with great success in contemporary cinema - from early classics such as The Great Train Robbery (1903) and the crazy antics of the iconic Keystone Kops ensemble, to modern blockbusters like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).

And although unprecedented technological progress has impacted all levels of film-making, the basis of 'The Chase' that had been laid down those many years ago, remains very much the same.

A sleeper hit is a term used by the entertainment industry to describe a film that despite having little promotion or lacking a successful opening, proves to be successful over a period of time.

The term also applies when a particular film's box-office success vastly outweighs a modest budget, Where predictions are unfavorable but, through good word-of-mouth, the contrary is proven. Not only in terms of box-office and audience approval, but also critically. An attribute normally associated with independent or obscure films.

Definition from Wikipedia: The Australian New Wave was an era of resurgence in worldwide popularity of Australian cinema, particularly in the United States. It began in the early 1970s and lasted until the mid-late 1980s.

The era also marked the emergence of 'Ozploitation', a film genre characterized by the exploitation of colloquial Australian culture which, since the early 2000s has experienced a revival.

The term 'Ozploitation' came about when writer-director Quentin Tarantino referred to the genre as 'Aussiesploitation'. When creating his documentary 'Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!' director Mark Hartley decided to use a shorter term to encompass the era and thus the term 'Ozploitation' was born.

Definition from Oxford Dictionaries.com:

"A long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behaviour, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation."

Schizophrenia is not rare, the lifetime risk of developing this disorder is widely accepted to be around 1 in 100. Contrary to popular belief, although the delusional thoughts and hallucinations of schizophrenia sometimes lead to violent behavior, most people that suffer from schizophrenia are neither violent nor a danger to others.

Listed below are a number of films that have addressed schizophrenia over the years. And in the process have helped raise awareness to a disorder that affects about 24 million people worldwide.

A collection of DVD & Blu-ray titles available on the Masters of Cinema | Eureka label - Including future releases.

The Masters of Cinema organisation was founded in 2001 and was initially unrelated to Eureka Entertainment Ltd.

The four co-founders of MoC were spread around the world (Canada, USA, and the UK) and together they contributed to the popular website mastersofcinema.org - a touchstone for the worldwide cinephile community.

In early 2004, Masters of Cinema began collaborating with Eureka on The Masters of Cinema Series, and in late 2008 Eureka consolidated their investment in the Series by acquiring the Masters of Cinema outright.

The Masters of Cinema Series is now a wholly owned label of Eureka Entertainment Ltd, London.
