"By showing hunger, deprivation, starvation and brutality, as well as endurance and nobility, documentaries inform, prod our memories, even stir us to action. Such films do battle for our very soul."
- Theodore Bikel

It is my firm belief that documentary film not only plays a major role in informing, educating, and raising awareness to issues that affect us all on a global level but, documentaries also have the profound ability to affect us on an emotional level. I believe this emotional connection is an essential component when viewed in conjunction with an objective analysis of all the available facts and data that relate to a particular topic, subject, or event. This symbiotic relationship between these various factors are, in my view, fundamental. It is the basis that creates the well-informed individual's need, passion and empathy necessary in wanting to become involved. And instrumental in one choosing to actively participate in making a positive and meaningful humanitarian contribution. It is in this regard that documentaries can prove invaluable.

The purpose of this list is to try to inspire and provide for a multilateral and progressive approach to it's subject-matter. Specifically from a global perspective. This is supported by various documentaries, and links, that address and relate to the universal connection between various facets of the human condition, man and nature, and the ongoing global issues that confront us all. This is supported by both; factual information, and, the views, statements, or quotes, from all walks of life - from world leaders, scientists, activists, artists and documentarians, to the man-on-the-street.

*Please note: Though social and political issues are addressed, the motive behind this list is expressly unbiased & apolitical in it's approach. It does not want, nor try, to force an opinion and has no hidden agenda - other than that which has been described in the paragraph above. Therefor, any conclusions, or opinions regarding the issues or views expressed on this list (including the films contained within) is left entirely to the individual's own analysis and interpretation.

Stephen Spielberg: "I think documentaries are the greatest way to educate an entire generation that doesn't often look back to learn anything about the history that provided a safe haven for so many of us today."

Stephen R. Covey: "Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change."

(From Wikipedia): The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film is handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.

When the first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929 to honor films released in 1927-1928, there was no separate category for foreign language films.

Between 1947 and 1955, the Academy presented Special/Honorary Awards to the best foreign language films released in the United States. These awards, however, were not handed out on a regular basis. No award was given in 1953, and were not competitive since there were no nominees but simply one winning film per year.

For the Academy Awards to honor films released in 1956, held on March 27, 1957, a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since then.

The Best Foreign Language Film Award is not presented to a specific individual. It is accepted by the winning film's director, but is considered an award for the submitted country as a whole.

Definition from (//www.allaboutphilosophy.org/existentialism.htm):

Existentialism is a 20th century termed philosophy concerned with human existence, finding self, and the meaning of life through free will, choice and personal responsibility. The belief is that people are searching to find out who and what they are throughout life as they make choices based on their experiences, beliefs, and outlook. And personal choices become unique without the necessity of an objective form of truth. An existentialist believes that a person should be forced to choose and be responsible without the help of laws, ethnic rules, or traditions.

Listed below are a number of existentially-themed films which I feel address the human condition in a profound, and ultimately, rewarding way. Gaining insight into ourselves and being able to express this with others through these films.

In reverse chronological order and purely subjective.

Only the lonely: A movie loners list.

(Definition from Wikipedia): A loner is a person who avoids or does not actively seek human interaction or prefers to be alone. There are many reasons for solitude, intentional or otherwise, and 'Loner' does not imply a specific cause. Intentional reasons include spiritual and religious considerations or personal philosophies. Unintentional reasons involve temperament, being highly sensitive, having more extreme forms of shyness, deep seated guilt, or various mental disorders.

There are different types of loner, including individuals that prefer solitude and are content to have very limited social interaction. The second type includes individuals that are forced to be isolated because they are rejected by society (Or, by circumstances beyond their control). This individual typically experiences loneliness. The first type does not feel lonely even when they are alone, at least, not in the same way as would a social person who found themselves isolated. However, these are very broad generalizations and it is not uncommon for loners to experience both of these dimensions at some point.

The concept of of a lonely hero (or antihero) is a recurring theme in film and is often the subject in popular culture.

Listed below are a number of films, supported by quotes, with special emphasize on specific characters, that I feel not only relate to the above description, but also, encompass, reflect, and explore characteristics of the loner's condition.

A sleeper hit is a term used by the entertainment industry to describe a film that despite having little promotion or lacking a successful opening, proves to be successful over a period of time.

The term, sleeper hit, also applies when a particular film's box-office success vastly outweighs a modest budget, Where predictions are unfavorable, but, through good word-of-mouth the contrary is proven. Not only in terms of box-office and audience approval, but also critically. An attribute normally associated with independent or obscure films.

In other instances, a film is strategically marketed by making use of 'sneak' previews or demographics to target a particular audience. An initiative allowing audiences to 'discover' a film for themselves, (as opposed to a more direct, 'must-see' marketing strategy) where, once again, word-of-mouth plays a key role in promoting a film.

The first thought that came to mind was, how does one possibly compile a list of 100 greatest movies of all time? What is the criteria that one should adhere to? Is it critical opinion, public opinion, popularity, box-office takings, historical significance, cultural impact, awards, ratings, greatest lists or surveys? Or all of the above?
The truth is, film-appreciation is simply not an exact science. It cannot be quantified only through numbers and statistics.

Though a number of films have deservedly remained consistent on greatest lists and I do not want to undermine the importance of critical or public opinion but, factually, critical opinion and film rankings have constantly evolved and changed over the years (IMDb's Top 250 is a great example of this). Many films that were once panned, overlooked, or were box-office failures upon release have, over time, been re-evaluated and have since found acclaim as overlooked or under-appreciated masterpieces. And, resultantly, these films have found their way onto greatest lists and surveys. And the same can be said for films that in their heyday were widely praised, only to lose their appeal over time.
Then, there are those films that for the individual viewer have never lost their appeal and continue to resonate over the years. Even after repeated viewings and under very different circumstances.
It is therefor due to these and a myriad of other factors that an absolute in regards to a universal list of the greatest films of all-time will, thankfully, never be carved in stone or totally agreed upon.

Hypothetically speaking, if film were an exact science, that would mean one's personal feelings regarding the value of a specific film, it's personal spiritual and emotional resonance would not apply to the individual but, determined solely by scientific means. Thus undermining the very principles of which this or any other art-form is based on - the freedom of expression of both artist and observer.

That is not to say there should not be any criteria compiling such a list. There will undoubtedly be various influential factors. Those factors should however not solely determine or govern a specific choice. It should instead offer insight in helping to make that choice, by deriving at one's own conclusions from one's own examination.
Therefor, having said that, ultimately the 'criteria' of this list is a purely subjective view of some of the greatest films I've seen, and is not mean't to try and sway or determine the views of others.

And lastly, because all the films listed here are a collective fellowship of films based on their own unique attributes - and therefor I cannot possibly justify one film above the other - there is no specific order.

Since the dawn of film-making 'The Chase' has proven itself immensely popular among film-makers and audiences alike. A plot device that guarantees a steady flow of non-stop action and forward-moving momentum that is still used with great success today. From films such as The Great Train Robbery (1903) and the antics of the iconic Keystone Kops ensemble, to modern blockbusters like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
And although unprecedented technology and progress has impacted all levels of film-making, the basis of 'The Chase' that had been laid down those many years ago remains very much the same.

Listed below is a choice of movies where, 'The Chase' plays a prominent role. Either as an important narrative device, or through an iconic or noteworthy chase scene (or scenes) synonymous with a particular movie.

In some cases, where two directors are the subject of a particular documentary; that documentary will appear twice under the respective directors names.

Where numerous directors, and their films, are the subject of a particular documentary, these documentaries appear at the bottom of this list, and are labelled as 'Various'.

A number of influential producers, including persons who are not, per-say, classified as directors, but have directed at least one or more films, have been included. This is noted under the applicable title.

Some 'Making-of' titles have been included that feature an insight into the director through the directing process.

The second part of a trilogy of 100 greatest movies of all time.
After compiling the first list, it struck me that it would be criminal negligence on my part to neglect a number of films that, I feel, are deserving of being labelled as 100 of the greatest movies of all time. And, once again, after compiling this list, I was once again struck by the fact that I had failed to include a number of essential films. Therefor, not wanting to make one continuous list, I instead opted to make three separate lists. A concept based on the definition of a movie trilogy, which is; "A set of three works that are connected, that can either be seen as a single work or as three individual works."

Returning for the last time.
The third and final installment of my ultimate 100 greatest movies of all time.
Though there are still a number of greatest films that have been excluded from this trilogy, if I had to recommend 300 movies to myself, I can confidently state that all the movies listed in this trilogy would apply. Movies that have not only made an indelible impression but, continue to do so, even after repeated viewings. Yet, it would be very arrogant of me to think that others should or would agree, or try and force an opinion. After all, one of the great joys of watching movies is not only to have the freedom to make up one's own mind, but also the freedom to share that opinion.

Australia's invaluable contributions to world cinema is without question. From early forerunners such as the world's first feature-length film - 'The Story of the Kelly Gang' (1906) and masterpieces such as 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' (1975) to modern day blockbusters like 'Mad Max: Fury Road' (2015), are just a few examples of Australia's impact on the cinematic universe.

Based on research, the purpose of this list is to encompass a wide range of Australian films, from cult-classics and culturally significant films, to award-winners and modern blockbusters. Films that not only typify the cinema of 'Down Under' but are also representative of it.

Definition from Wikipedia: The Australian New Wave was an era of resurgence in worldwide popularity of Australian cinema, particularly in the United States. It began in the early 1970s and lasted until the mid-late 1980s.

The era also marked the emergence of 'Ozploitation', a film genre characterized by the exploitation of colloquial Australian culture which, since the early 2000s has experienced a revival.

The term 'Ozploitation' came about when writer-director Quentin Tarantino referred to the genre as 'Aussiesploitation'. When creating his documentary 'Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!' director Mark Hartley decided to use a shorter term to encompass the era and thus the term 'Ozploitation' was born.

Definition from Oxford Dictionaries.com: "A long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behaviour, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation."
Schizophrenia is not rare, the lifetime risk of developing this disorder is widely accepted to be around 1 in 100. Contrary to popular belief, although the delusional thoughts and hallucinations of schizophrenia sometimes lead to violent behavior, most people that suffer from schizophrenia are neither violent nor a danger to others.
