ABCD( American Born Confused Desi ) : so am I Confused!!
ABCD is a movie set in a new premise and narrates a fresh story. It starts off well but loses its focus n clarity post the 1st half. ABCD is the story of a a young man Johns living his luxurious youth life in New York. Certain situations in his and his buddy Korah's life lands them up in India and they are forced not to go back. Why and what they do next is the movie..
ABCD becomes less engaging and slow post interval. Though the climax comes as a relief for the audience, by then we would have already been wondering why this isn't over yet.
ABCD has very few scenes that makes us laugh. But they seem isolated and artificial in the narrative. Johns and Korah's situation in Kerala was not well exploited in the script and that results in the dullness of the movie. The script, the characters should have been much more smarter, crisp and engaging. Then this would have been too good. ABCD falls short of what it could have been.
Performance wise Dulquer needs some polishing in the acting department. Jacob Gregory manages off well. Tovino's debut is not bad. Aparna Nair did her part smooth and nice. But apart from all these,, the show stealer was Gopi sunder with the Background Score. Loved the way he used the windows and apple tunes in a fun scene. Though there are certain scenes without any dialogues BG score makes us laugh giving the scenes a comedy touch. Thumbs up for him (y)
Go in without any expectations for ABCD. If you are a dulquer fan, may be you will like this.
Immanuel : God Is With Us..
The meaning of the title is 'GOD IS WITH US'. Also, with this movie. This is a 'pan-common man' parable narrated in the most realistic way. Trailer itself showed the goodness this movie has and that was the reason why I thought of going for this on the 3rd day of release. And I am happy having seen this.
This is the story of an ordinary man facing setbacks in life and how he defends himself trying to keep his small family happy. Though the entire movie can thus be summarized in a single line there are many small things that this movie reminds us through small instances.
It reminds us the importance of being true to one's conscience at least and life is not all about making money. Money should be a part of life, for living : life is most important and money a part of it. Its a reminder for the younger generation to give respect n care for elder people as they have more experiences of life than we have : and we should respect that factor. 'Immanuel' is all about realizing such small things that will make our life a whole lot better.
Just like the script there are many other talented hands behind this movie who deserve an appreciation. Starting off with performances, veteran actress Sukumari was as usual a miracle to watch on screen. Just like the introduction of Immanuel was welcomed with loud applause, this wonderful actress also received respectful applause and her portrayal of 'Khadeejumma' brought tears making us realize again who we lost. Mammooty as the good hearted Immanuel was subtle and was at one of his best in acting. Reenu Mathews as immanuel's wife and the sweet Gauri Shanker as son of Immanuel complemented immanuel's family beautifully.
One common mistake that I have seen in other movies is the selection of a new non-malayali actress cum model and she screwing up the character with acting and poor dialogue delivery. Fortunately director lal jose casted a perfect pair for mammooty in this and it adds to the beauty of the movie. The next brilliant performance comes from Fahad Fazil who performs at an intensity that's on a par with Mammooty. Both of them does their part respectively well without outshining each other. Along with these actors, it was a delight to watch Nedumudi venu , Sunil Sugadha , Ramesh Pisharody, Salim Kumar doing their roles naturally. Music of the differently abled and amazing musician Afzal Yousef was also really good. The church song 'ennod kude..' is my favorite track in this.
There was not even a single dull moment or any dragging in this. Completely loved this. Yes Indeed.
God is with this movie and its entire team.
David (tamil) ( 2013 )
The making. That was the main attraction of director Bejoy Nambiar's previous project : Shaitan. I was so excited to see that movie in a totally new making style. Bejoy Nambiar was added to my favorite film maker's list and I don't miss my favorites' creations. That's how I got in for 'DAVID' , the tamil version.
Watched this in a local theatre near to my house. The main advantage of this is that there wont be a 'mass' presence to disturb the peaceful movie watching. It was released quite a few days back and I went for a noon show on a Tuesday. So there was no chance of a disturbance and I like it that way at times.
'DAVID' is a sleek n simple tale of two persons with the same name. though their life is shown on a parallel mode, it happens during 2 different times(1999 & 2010). Jiva as the aspiring guitarist and Vikram as the so called 'unlucky' fisherman of goa, tabu as his friend, his mother, his dad; all were great delight to watch. Isha Shervani does her part decently and the good moments in this were in the Vikram's story.
The album is awesome and I loved all the tracks in this. The film opens up with the theme song of 'DAVID' and that's very exciting to watch. The unconventional 'khoya khoya chaand' style (of Shaitan) is repeated in this also in a fight sequence.
The way I understood , 'DAVID' is about the identity that each one of us have and why its not possible for one to be someone else. We all have a name, a soul and a character and we are supposed to do certain things which only we can do. So we shouldn't be trying to be someone else. If we did, then who is gonna do our part?? I felt that's what the movie is all about. The name 'DAVID' was just a random pick ; it could have be anyone , any name..
VISWAROOPAM : not great.. OK OK
VISWAROOPAM ( 2013 )
I didn't have an expectations for this movie. Had a thought that the 'Ulaganaayakan' would have made a sensible movie unlike 'Dasavatharam'.
To be very frank, 'Viswaroopam' is just a story that we all have seen before. A man who fights against terrorism under cover. Packed with some amateurish group fights, blasts. Movie starts off very well and then it becomes so predictable. The theatre was full house and the guy next to me was going on saying his predictions as to whats gonna happen next.
Lack of clarity in the narration, flaws in the present-to-flashback-to- present , characters who are never introduced to the audience. The same way the hero's wife in the movie is confused about the reality of her husband, I was too. In no time, without clearing the doubts and declaring a sequel, the movie ended!!
Impressive cast, though all of them didn't have much to do. And most of the info about the characters other than their name is not told in this. May be the director has kept it for the next part of this to come. It's a one-man show of Actor-Director Kamal Hassan and its amazing to see him do the action sequences with great effort and flexibility.
Making wise, the shoot in real locations have given a good feel, but the language spoken by the characters in those scenes kept me puzzled. Even though when the movie gets over, you still have many questions in head. Not a very good direction. Also, the songs weren't placed properly and the dance song was too long.
Being a fan of action movies, this one wasn't impressive for me. TRUE LIES made on similar plot was much more better and I have enjoyed it many times. Not writing off the movie/director. Waiting for the second part (if it happens) and a much better movie from KAMAL HASSAN sir.
Race 2 (2013)
RACE 2 : Race Continues..
RACE 2 ( 2013 )
I love watching thrillers, action movies. Movies that truly makes you go wow!! And you have the highest adrenaline rush while watching it. 'RACE' the previous part of 'RACE 2' was one such movie. It gave twist after twist and surprised me totally. So when heard about the second part of it, I had already made my mind to watch it. and I am equally thrilled as last time.
'RACE 2' has a very stylish star cast. John Abraham in place of Akshaye Khanna. Jacqueline, Deepika padukone and Amisha patel in place of Katrina kaif, Sameera Reddy and Bipasha. Saif Ali Khan as Ranveer Singh and Anil Kapoor as his best buddy continues as in previous version.
This is a revenge story of the characters and they all are blessed with lots of Greed. Money and Betrayal is there in full power which causes for the twists in the story. Except for Saif's and Anil Kapoor's character, we wont know who is whose who till the last minute. That uncertainty is the best part about 'RACE 2' as it was in 'RACE'.
The movie is international and we shouldn't be logical when watching this. The money that these characters deal with is unimaginable in normal sense and little 'too much'. But this being a movie where its all for money, amount can be anything. So leave that. The director duo wanted it to be a bigger hit than the first part so they have repeated some 'ingredients' from the previous recipe. Atif aslam song, an exclusive song to woo Saif's character ( Touch me in RACE and Lat lag gayi in this) , a last scene between Saif and Anil where some last doubts of we the audience are cleared. Could have avoided these repetitions. Also the songs in number. 'Lat lag gayee' was unnecessary. Saif was already finding it hard to dance in previous songs and then came this. As same as Saif and they both have made the song dull. 'Be intehaan' in a typical romantic duet style didn't look good. But the title track 'Allah Duhai' was stunningly superb in making. The choreographer deserves a big thumbs up for it. Songs being good and groovy doesn't make you bored in between the movie or does it slow down the pace.
The new characters introduced of John, Jacqueline, Deepika are really cool for the plot. Except for Jacqueline, impressive performance from the cast. John doesn't have any new expressions to show so he has been asked to show his body more. Jacqueline's dialogue delivery and expression does not seem to sync anywhere. Amisha patel was good with what she had to do but her character was limited in the script. She could have been given more to do on screen. The story being ultra-modern , the ladies are all stunningly hot in this flick.
I would call this a rich script which is required essentially for an entertaining thriller. Though some action scenes were out of the world, I don't mind it that much.
A good experience provided you are familiar with the nature of 'RACE'. Its all about Betrayal and Winning..
PRANAYAM ( 2011 ) I am writing this after watching it 2nd time, as the first time couldn't hear the dialogues clearly at some parts of the movie. Second time, watched this in a different theatre, with good sound and only very few people : that indicates two things, either the movie is exceptionally well or very bad. In this case, it's the first !!
PRANAYAM is brilliant. Brilliant in many ways : Story, Performance by the actors , Music, Camera, Narration style. A story about love stories. I think that would be the 'one line' to give for this movie. Achutha Menon is happily settled and staying with his son's family. One day as he meets a new family who has just moved into the floor below theirs, he is shocked to see his ex-wife Grace there. That takes us back to the wonderful life that they had before, the way they met, fell in love , got married. The same state of surprise and shock accumulates in Grace also. Menon gets a cardiac arrest and he is taken to the hospital by Grace & other residents of the flat. At present , grace is married to Mathews character who is half paralysed and moves around in a wheelchair. They have a daughter(dhanya mary ) who is married and settled. They all are staying together in the same flat. These three characters' past life and when they meet again what each of them goes through, what others related to them goes through, forms the plot of PRANAYAM.
The three main characters have been portrayed excellently by three brilliant actors of Indian cinema : Anupam Kher , Mohanlal and Jayapradha. Anoop Menon as Achutha Menon's son also has done his part quite naturally and the rest of the cast backs the overall performance of the movie. Songs are also good. ' paattil e paatil '(Shreya and Jayachandran, solos) is a good one that you'll hum even after the movie. Then there is Lehan Cohan's I'm Your Man sung by Mohanlal. These two can be said as the highlight songs in the movie. Camera just makes each and every frame look so beautiful. Should really appreciate Satheesh Kurup for the kind of lighting and color tone selected for the movie. Its ' see and feel good ' for the eyes.
And the way the director Blessy has narrated it is so beautiful. Sometimes we may feel that its a bit slow movie, but there is a specific pace for each kind of movie is what I basically think and the pace of this movie well suits for it.
Blessy has made a classic movie , slowly bringing the old goodness that Malayalam film had with some nice heart touching stories. A nice movie for everyone to watch and experience LOVE in different perspectives.
KAHAANI ( 2012 )
Very late to see this movie, i know. And i already knew the climax of this as someone with a uninteresting silly attitude wanted me not to have the thrill what they had. Whatever, attitude problems. I would never do that. And about watching this movie,
Very excited to see a thriller after a gap. and that too set in one of my favorite city : KOLKATA. Vidya's character vidya lands up in kolkata to find her missing husband. That's the plot, the only plot. And that is perhaps the only negative thing about this. Felt there should have been sub plots. Could have given more space and role to "KOLKATA" . Apart from a few shots and fests of the city, there is not much about it.
But apart from that, KAHAANI is really very good. A very engaging thriller well shot and performed by the crew and cast. Not making it dull with any unwanted songs or fight scenes, a common problem that most films of this type will have. It's also well edited and so not slow. After watching all the movie and you see the climax, u will be like WOW!!! AWESOME..
Soon after TDP, Vidya's another good role but not up to what she did before, but still the role has been very well written and executed by the director and Vidya respectively.
@Sujoy Gosh : A very good work of yours but the narration could have been more interesting with twists towards the end. If we keep the climax aside, we won't get anything new out of this.
The Kolkata sounds and the BG tunes jell very well. liked that also..
Engeyum Kadhal (2011)
as a whole , really wonderful!!
ENKEYUM KAADHAL ( 2011 ) Tried 2 times to watch this in my laptop but slept off, and finally third time I saw this , felt good at the end. A nice, not so bad love story. Strictly for A ONE TIME watch. Its about a multi millionaire businessman KAMAL in France ( ya ya, tamil films have this and even they have moved out of India ) who celebrates one month every year after his long work schedules, in Paris. He is scared of the term LOVE. ' no commitments , no disappointments, no regrets' that's his motto. And into is life comes a girl KAYAL, who simply , just like that , in a second falls in love with him ( it had to happen quick , otherwise the film would be 5 hours long ). But our hero isn't that type na, so she tries to make him love her by telling him some false boy friends' list like he kamal's list of girl friends. By the way, her dad is a private detective who spies on the people whom his clients want to and gets the details and whereabouts of them. And this naughty KAYAL who is his daughter reads all the case files , and that's how she comes to know KAMAL. He leaves KAYAL also just the usual way and our heroine ( she has a pakka tamil name KAIVALLY) is left heartbroken and that leads to a song. As usual it takes a 5 minute song for our hero to realize that he is in LOVE and gets back to heroine.
AS any other love story, this also is the same. No difference at all. But the way it is shot, some cool songs ( though all ain't picturised that well. my favorite is the very first song featuring director of the movie ENKEYUM KAADHAL ) and some nice scenes, Hansika's acting at some places . There are some good moments that I loved. As a whole, it's good.
Ee Adutha Kaalath (2012)
Good attempt. but hasn't come out that well.
E ADUTHA KAALATH ( 2012 )
Saw this.. The story of the society at present, life of people at present.. Not so great.. average script and 'lots gone wrong' Direction makes this un impressive in the first half. Second half is better and engaging though not so great. Dubbing has flaws , acting of one or two not good .. But there are many good things also.. INDARJITH and JAGATHY masters their role perfectly. So is the stylish BG SCORE by Gopi Sundar. Fortunately the director himself was the editor. So lots of his own flaws he has hidden cleverly .. A nice attempt to create something different but it hasn't come out well..
August Rush (2007)
Beauty without logic!!
AUGUST RUSH ( 2007 )
Have been trying to watch it fully once more since the time saw it first. Now only it became possible. The movie is fully about MUSIC but , didn't feel so convincing and real at some points in the movie. Apart from that felt it's good altogether. So lets keep that aside.
It's the story of a boy named EVAN TAYLOR, orphaned ( by circumstances when he was born ) and whose parents who were also separated because of the same circumstances as his, finds each other and unites with the gift they all have got equally and immensely : MUSIC.
Clever casting and very fine performances by the actors, EVAN was too good so was LYLA. The main part of this, of course the MUSIC is very beautiful and very well matching the mood of the movie. Story is drafted to a script with flaws but it doesn't change the course or make it less enjoyable. Could have been much better by being a bit more REAL. Cool name and a nice movie as the name tells.
