In 1961, Basil Dearden’s Victim became the first mainstream English-language drama to feature a sympathetic homosexual protagonist, played by matinee idol Dirk Bogarde. In 2011, Andrew Haigh’s boy-meets-boy romance Weekend defied expectations to become a crossover art-house hit. The fact that, fifty years after Victim, Weekend is also considered groundbreaking is evidence of how far cinema may still have to go in terms of gay representation. But between these two revelatory films, there have been plenty of other important and entertaining ones made about gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, and several of them are available in the Criterion Collection, including works by trailblazers like Robert Epstein, Derek Jarman, and Gus van Sant.

On the 25th anniversary of the groundbreaking film Do the Right Thing, BAMcinématek and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences look back on nearly three decades of remarkable Spike Lee Joints. The writer-director-actor’s consistently surprising works display a boundless visual imagination, some of the most fearlessly intelligent discourse on race relations in American cinema, and an ability to infuse independent projects and big-budget blockbusters alike with his edgy, energetic style. All films directed by Spike Lee.

BAMcinématek and Cinema Conservancy present this six week, 60+ film series spotlighting the independent films of the neglected decade between the golden age of 70s New Hollywood and the indie boom of the 90s. Exploring the textures of regional America and uncovering alternative histories to the supposed monoculture of the Reagan years, independent filmmakers of the 1980s offered up an edgy alternative to overblown Hollywood blockbusters and the straight-laced conservatism of the era.
