21 Jump Street (2012)
Quality film in terms of action, story and especially comedy.
So I just came back from watching "21 Jump Street" and was seriously impressed with not only how funny It was, (For the most part) but also how smart it was, in terms of understanding what young people are like today and how they put a spin on certain scenarios.
I'm assuming you already know the story as this review will most likely not be the first you read, so I will just skip to what I thought. Let me get one thing clear, skinny Jonah Hill is just as funny as fat Jonah Hill. Weight is not relevant to comedy unless it relies mostly on slapstick humour, which this film only has touches of. There were so many moments to pick from where I laughed, but by far the funniest scene Is Channing Tatum and Hill on drugs.
I was Impressed with how surprisingly good everyone acted in this, as generally a film packed with comedy has less focus on good acting. Obviously it's far from Oscar worthy, but I felt myself getting really involved In the film, unlike a comedy such as step brothers, which I saw more as a scenario for making joke after joke.
There are only a couple of minor things I have to say about this. The first being that the comedy falls a bit flatter during the final act. Don't get me wrong, I still laughed in places, but the pumping out of good jokes was much more consistent in the first half of the film. Nevertheless, still a hilarious film. The second thing was a few predictable clichés that I saw coming, but I can let that slide because most films these days have them.
Overall the best comedy I've seen so far this year. I certainly recommend it to anyone who Is a fan of the original "21 Jump Street", a fan of Jonah Hill and just generally a fan of good comedies.
Scream 4 (2011)
Wow, what a pleasant surprise.
I had just about given up with the scream franchise after the less enjoyable scream 2, and the failure of scream 3. I was only keeping the original scream in my thoughts as a great slasher flick and thats how i felt for a while. When i heard that scream 4 was coming out, naturally my expectations were sceptical to say the least. I had never been so glad to be wrong, this film is such a breath of fresh air into the modern day horror flicks. Its like scream 1 on steroids, on average a person dies about every 5 minutes, and you can tell their is some creation put into some of these kills too. There are more twists than a hurricane, and a good balance of the old cast mixed in with the new generation. The new actors they picked do a great job in helping this reboot/sequel work.
As i'm sure many of you are aware that the opening scene has received a lot of positive hype, and i am another person to back this up, because it is rare to see a perfect combination of horror mixed with comedy crammed into such a short time frame. Throughout the rest of the film this element is quite similar, with a toned down version through most of the film and then a very entertaining ending.
The final act is the cherry on top, extremely entertaining with hilarious references from the original and decent twists of them, which also is fairly consistent throughout the whole film. I'm not writing about plot or story because i don't want to give anything away, but you can expect a fairly decent plot. This is of course overshadowed by the entertainment factor.
Certainly the best horror flick i have seen in a while. The only thing that stops it getting a 10 is the story, which i forgive them for because you can tell the focus was on entertainment factor. Good job guys, 9/10
The Karate Kid (2010)
The classic was better
After already hearing about the mixed views given on this film, i wasn't expecting to be blown away. I did however find it fairly enjoyable. Sure there was a lot of things that annoyed me, the unnecessary love story, the predictable story, Jaden Smith in general. Nonetheless, i still had factors i enjoyed.
For example, the Karate scenes (Oh sorry, Kung Fu) were pretty good, and Jackie Chan was a good character to play "Mr.Han", but i expected these things already, i mean, it's supposed to be a martial arts movie? It's a pretty good film, even though Jaden can't act which kind of ruined it, but definitely worth watching, especially from a family perspective.
