Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne,

in the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
in the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

ORIGINS:
During the Second Age of Middle-earth, the Dark Lord Sauron devised a plan to corrupt the Elves, and sumbit them to his will. He put on a disguise and approached the Elves of Eregion (Hollin), introducing himself as Annatar - an emissary of the Valar (gods). Those Elves were known throughout the land as very skilled craftsmen, led by their Lord - the master artisan Celebrimbor. Sauron decided to exploit that fact, so he promised them that he will teach them the art of forging magical rings, which he eventually did. Using their newfound knowledge, the Elves forged 16 magical rings, called the Rings of Power.

ONE RING *
But it was all a part of Sauron's plan. He returned to his realm of Mordor, and forged a master-ring, which was be able to control the other Sixteen Rings, and therefore, enslave their bearers... One Ring to rule them all. Sauron poured a large part of his power into the One Ring, so the Dark Lord's life was directly tied to the existence of the ring. In the future, the One Ring itself would prove to be severely addicting to its bearers, but only Sauron himself could harness its full power. However, the Elves learned of that trickery, and refused to use the Rings of Power.

SACK OF EREGION:
Furious because of that, Sauron gathered an army, and swiftly attacked Eregion, before their allies could help them. The land was destroyed, its people killed, and Celebrimbor himself was captured. Sauron then tortured him into revealing where he hid the Sixteen Rings. Celebrimbor told him the hiding place, before dying from his wounds. Sauron then took the Sixteen Rings, and started searching for new ring-bearers to enslave.

THREE RINGS ***
But not all of the Rings of Power came to Sauron's hands. Before the forging of the One Ring, Celebrimbor himself made three Rings of Power, which were more powerful than the Sixteen. Because he made them himself, without Sauron's influence, the Three Rings were untainted by the Dark Lord's evil, and could not be controlled by the One Ring (although their powers were still bound to its existence, because they were made using Sauron's techniques). Before the Sack of Eregion, Celebrimbor gave the Three Rings in safekeeping to the two of the most powerful Elves in Middle-earth.

SEVEN RINGS *******
Sauron then distributed the Sixteen. Seven rings he gave to the leaders of the Seven Houses of the Dwarves. The Dwarven rings had the power of multiplying whatever riches they would mine, so they quickly became very wealthy. However, Sauron could not enslave them, because the power of the Seven Rings also greatly increased the Dwarf-kings' greed. Coupled with their natural resistance, they could not be submitted to the will of Sauron and the One Ring. Years later, prior to the War of the Ring, all Dwarven Rings were either destroyed by the Dragon-fire, or taken back by Sauron.

NINE RINGS *********
Sauron gave the Nine Rings to the kings, warriors and sorcerers of Men, which granted them powerful and unnaturally long lives. However, the One Ring gradually started forcing its will on them. One by one, each and every one of them was transformed into the Ringwraiths (Nazgul), the fear-inducing undead spirits bound to the One Ring. When the Nazgul became Sauron's servants, he took the Nine Rings back to himself. Years later, when the One Ring was finally destroyed, all remaining Rings of Power lost their magical properties.

The fate of the Elven Rings can be found in this poll:
