The Jungle (2013)
Scary enough.
I'm not a lover of scary movies but I loved Andrew Traucki's earlier film with the crocodile - Black Water. The acting from the female lead in that was superb and the effects with the crocodile very realistic. This isn't as good but he is very good at suspense which builds slowly. Like David Strattan I also don't like hand-held camera work, but it does give the feeling of maneuvering through tight jungle spaces, so perhaps its use here is appropriate. The actors give good performances but the script could have been better developed. The horror genre is a difficult choice as Hollywood can afford bigger and better effects. I hope the writer /director will make more movies. I know it isn't easy to get finance as an independent. He has talent and should persist.
The Jumping Jeweller of Lavender Bay (1971)
Gentle b/w film set on Lavender Bay, Sydney Harbour
Sweet Aussie short film about a henpecked husband who finds a way to express himself. Enjoyable and humorous though probably a bit slow by today's standards. Has been used by "men's groups" as an example of a man realising his dreams. Fantasy sequences are well used to show his aspirations. Women characters are somewhat stereotyped but typical of portrayals of the period (1971). The setting of Lavender Bay wharf, Sydney Harbour is a bonus with the harbour and Bridge looking beautiful and recognisable to a wide audience. The story was based on a book by Hugh Atkinson and the Little River Band wrote a song "The Long Jumping Jeweller of Lavender Bay" which starts: "Everybody can't be heros, but some can still try, to make their lives a little different before the time it goes by, now I live up around the north shore in a room with no view, every morning on that ferry, my view is filled with you."
