Pixels (2015)
Total fluff, but very funny
Totally unrealistic, completely unbelievable. You see Adam Sandler, you think this will be a rubbish film. And it isn't. It's actually a very good film, once you can get over Kevin James being the President of the US. The 3D is not very noticeable most of the time. For those, like my husband, who remember the early 80s games, it's nostalgia. For those, like me, who don't, it's initially a bit confusing. Ultimately, it's a fun film, though there's not much to it. The post-ending shot is cute, though. Adam Sandler isn't quite his annoying usual self - back to the "Bedtime Stories" Adam, thank heavens. It's OK for a bit of fun. If you're looking for a meaningful film, you wouldn't pick a Chris Columbus/Adam Sandler combo, would you?
The Legend of Hercules (2014)
Fun, if you have no expectations. But Hercules?
Well, we got the Nemean Lion.... ( not a spoiler, as it's in the very beginning of the film). Which I hope was played by Gerard Butler, as that is the only way even he would have taken a part in this film...
I don't even remember the actor who played the "Emmett" character from the "Twilight" films. I knew he was there, but he never played a vital role. I only recognised one cast member, and that was Kenneth Cranham, obviously adding to his retirement fund as he didn't get the Harry Potter gig.
Which makes me wonder, did they scrape the bottom of the barrel to get actors for the "Twilight" saga, Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning excepted, or did they all just skip acting classes and expect to walk into super-stardom?
All in all, if you enjoy the dubbed "Swords and Sandals" films of the 70s, you may like this. I did quite enjoy it, as a bit of 3D nonsense. Then I looked it up on this site and saw the budget. Oh. Dear.
Sunshine on Leith (2013)
Fun, even if you can see the end from 500 miles!
Saw this at a preview. The first couple of scenes were great, even though only my husband and I apparently saw the Proclaimers coming out of the pub when the lads are dancing their way back home ( we were the only ones who laughed, so the others obviously didn't realise that the lads' physique has changed since their skinny years!)
A warning to anyone who cried through "Slipping through my Fingers" in Mamma Mia. "Sunshine on Leith" - get the tissues handy! I was desperately trying not to sob out loud....
All in all, it was very enjoyable, though I wish Jason Flemyng's role had been bigger. Can't wait to see him on "Strictly"! Sure it sounded like he'd split his trousers!
There were a few wobbly voices, especially Peter Mullan's, but all in all, the cast acquitted themselves perfectly adequately. Jane Horrocks was superb, as always, and my husband ( a Scot) commended her on her accent.
One last thing. Why wasn't I invited to the flash mob?! Dexter, next time, send me an e-mail....
