The Greatest movie of the year but not really a Great movie
I hope Avatar does pick up a fair few Oscars it totally deserves them, in my opinion it is definitely the best film of the year. Also, yeah it probably will stand the test of time but I just get annoyed by all this rubbish about it being one of the best films ever. I wouldn't even say it was one of the best films of the decade, it's good but it's not as good as the lord of the rings trilogy or the departed or the dark knight or Gladiator. Plus, it I would say it probably is one of the best Sci-fi movies ever, but it's still not any way near the standard of Star Wars. The thing with star wars was it's acting and effects weren't that impressive, but it created a marvellous new universe and a brilliant storyline made up of great characters and great scenes from romantic scenes to action to comedy. Whereas, Avatar just gives us a new planet (possibly moon) with mediocre characters, a storyline with more meaning than entertainment and some great scenes which are only really great because of the 3D. Also, what is so great about the effects, they are pretty much the best available today but they are nothing spectacular or ahead of their time. I've seen other films where the effects look much more realistic, I know avatar was trying to do something much harder than anything before, but there's no point in praising a film for trying but failing. I did like the film I gave it 8/10 but I feel even this could have been a bit generous. It's a good film but it's not going to change the way movies are made or change the world. The only big affects I think it will have on the world will be taking a lot of money and making another big step towards a generation of 3D movies. I can't fault the acting that much I think Weaver and Worthington where fine but once again I don't think either of them put on a memorable performance worthy of awards. I also think the dialogue was well below standard.
