Apollo 18 (2011)
A lot of the same, but still interesting...
Yup, it's another one of those found-footage, shaky-cam movies. Just like Blair Witch, Quarantine, Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity. And I found that this Apollo 18 borrowed a lot of traits from those movies. We had the security cameras like PA2 and the infectious, bloodshot eye disease from Quarantine.
I know this is a poor excuse to back up why the movie was good, but it was interesting to see this style of movie on the moon. I liked the way this movie played with NASA history (similar to the opening of Transformers 3). And in a way, this movie did what I wanted to see from "Dark of the Moon".
But still, it was moon spiders. I was a little disappointed. I couldn't help but think of the song "Rock Lobster" when the aliens were revealed and from that point on, I couldn't take this movie seriously. This idea really did have a lot of potential, but it did not use of all of it.
As for the characters, they were about as 2 dimensional as you could get. Nate's "infected" personality was disturbing, but only mildly.
As for the scares, PA and Quarantine are definitely scarier. I called just about every single scare to my friends just before it happened, including the dead Russian in the cave. Very predictable.
If this movie succeeds in the box office and they make sequels like the title card at the beginning (Missions 18, 19 and 20) implies, I'd be willing to give this idea a second chance. It seemed there was a larger force at work in the movie than just some spiders. I don't believe the spiders were capable of flipping the rover and security camera or pulling Nate into the Crater.
If you're a fan of the found-footage horror movies, I recommend this film. It's by no means perfect, but it's still fun.
