Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
Cowboys & too many Aliens...begins well but ends up as a Spielberg cliché
There is a certain amount of assurance you expect when you know that the film involves Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Spielberg and Favreau. The film in the end delivered only that much.
Daniel Craig shines out of dirt, looks good and acts very well as a rough & tough cowboy. The initial build up works very well, raises the expectation, raises it further with Harrison Ford in a new befitting character of a veteran cowboy/colonel. Then, enter the aliens, i liked it to begin with but then found my fingers getting crossed. In next 20 odd minutes it made me feel that this cowboys+aliens experiment is now trying to satisfy only the kids in the theater. The initial feel good fizzled into a cliché sci-fi flick.
Nevertheless, i enjoyed myself going through the experiment, watching the cowboy part, lovely flying machines & cinematography. To conclude with it could be an amazing film had the aliens part treated as subtly as Daniel Craig in his cowboy avatar. Perhaps the way M Night Shyamlan did in the Signs.
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Kathryn has a crush on somebody important in the US
Hollywood has been fooling the American & Allies' people into wars for so long now. It makes wars look easy, puposeful & glorious to its people. ZDT makes people believe that the enemy can be so easily tortured and is easy to win against. I hope somebody in US soon makes a truly real and unbiased war film. Then perhaps American people will go against being fooled so easily.
And Katheryne Bigelow definitely has a crush on an Oil Corporation guy or a Federal banker or a politician. I wish she was as much cinematically creative as she politically is.
Neither I'm surprised to see the Metacritics rating it 9.5 and nor for it & Argo being over recognized through awards & nominations. I wish they promoted cinema(PTA & QT) over these Federal/Oil Ads.
Edited 10 Jan 13 Thanks to Academy for not over recognizing ZDT & Argo. Faith restored (a bit).
The Tree of Life (2011)
What a profound experience of love, acceptance, truth and simplicity !
The holistic perspective of "The tree of life" simplifies complexity of life to its very natural & simple being. It made me clearly witness and experience that I am a part of an essential universal process which has a beginning, a life span and a definite end. I just figured that with acceptance and love for self and all, life can be simple, joyful and purposeful. It does with much clarity and in just two hours, what most academic or spiritual books are unable to do.
Terrence Malick's truthful, simple and beautiful approach to the film made it an experience which might have a everlasting impact on my life.
Kudos to Malick and the entire cast and crew of the film.
