The Hurt Locker (2008)
A Modern Masterpiece
Kathryn Bigelow has made few movies in her time, some none may have heard of, others some consider a classic. And now, Bigelow returns with her latest film that is simply a masterpiece. The Hurt Locker won the Best Picture Oscar over Avatar, and rightly so. Bigelows approach to the film is original and fantastic and her visual style is the perfect taste for this kind of movie. The first scene literally throws us straight into the middle of the action, and gives us edge of seat action and shocks. And it doesn't stop there. Bigelow has small but important transitions from scene to scene and they work perfectly, giving us a relaxed moment before literally sending the viewer out on their next mission. Bigelow also creates a layout to the film that really sends a viewer through state of emotions, with her beginning the film with sad yet tense occasion. But, we are then introduced to Staff Seargent William James, a character who at first we seem to discover to be a light hearted almost rebellious kind of character, settings mood for the upcoming scene. As we go into our next scene, we see James' almost jokey kind of attitude to the situation, but, does not make it so we are sitting at the screen with a smile on out face, a mood where we feel the tension yet feel the fact that James' attitude is surprising for the situation. But as the films progress, so does James' and slowly he becomes darker and the film follows close behind. With us suddenly facing death and gruesome images, and the anger of James character that flourishes with film, as if they are strongly linked. Jeremy Renner plays Seargent James in The Hurt Locker, and gives a standout performance. As mentioned his character goes through many waves of emotions and different attitudes, and we feel as if Renner himself is not an actor but a devoted soldier who will stop at no cost to find answers and complete his mission. And this is where Renner shines, for as the film begins his character seems to be different but not stand out, but as the films continues if becomes so complex and detailed we cant full comprehend and Renner takes that mantle perfectly, acting as if her is the only one that knows the emotions. Bigelow also makes this movie perfect with her style, with her introduction showing and exploding bomb in slow motion, working superbly, for it gives a future incline to what is going to occur and be the main theme of the movie.Bigelow also uses her camera style perfectly for the film, making it not perfect and constantly still as if watching a scene. She makes sure the camera shakes and rattles as the bullets fly and the feet pound along the ground, making us feel as if we are there in the scene, not sitting in a cinema watching. The sound that echo through the streets, and the silence of a deserted but sinister town not only set a mood but again makes us feel nervous as if we are a soldier walking through the street. Sp, to conclude, Kathryn Bigelow has created a perfect film, with all ingredients included and more, she gives us the finest film in many years which literally ticks all the boxes, unlike many films today, yet makes The Hurt Locker, exciting and thrilling and a movie anyone can watch. Kathryn Bigelow is the first and only female to win a directing Oscar, not only is she one of the most worthy winners in history, I am sure she will have many more to come.
Scream 4 (2011)
Ghostface is after young and middle aged blood...
The latest film in the Scream trilogy, takes a whole new approach, introducing us to a whole lot of new characters, whilst giving us the memorable original three (Sidney, Dewey, and Gale). Scre4m also takes the approach of reboot and remake, giving us the rules to survive a remake, sort of. The film opens very strongly, with us jumping straight back into the trilogy we all love and remember, whilst giving something very new and definitely brilliant . We then from the beginning get a very small twist, and the opening just continues to improve, and as soon as we see the titles fly on the screen we feel very happy to finally see the film has returned. And many devout fans may even faint in there seats to see Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) walk out of her car. Although saying this the film through the middle seems to be the same, but don't get me wrong you will be literally on the edge of your seat, and may even let out a little scream yourself, but some of it feels same old, same old, but some will like that. But when we do reach the ending (and by the time the film has finished we have seen a blood splattered 15 deaths, just to warn you) we do not expect it, now i will not reveal much of the ending, but it is brilliantly performed and played out, while leaving us thinking what next what next? I will now go on to review the performances and characters in the film which were not on top par, but we do see a few brilliant stand out performances. There are some new and old, but one of the new is Alison Brie's performance as Sidney's publicist. She does bring a sense of humour to the film ,whilst giving her own little character in her own world, which she does manage to do perfectly. The other new character is Hayden Panettiere, Jill Roberts'(new main character, Sidney's cousin) she may not be laugh out loud funny but she will make you smile, and will always make you hope for her life when you see her on screen. Now, one of the golden oldies who stands out is Courtney Cox, in the fourth instalment she is at her most bitchy, and is still again funny in the film. She is always coming out with narky one liners, and manages to hold her own little show through out the film. Meanwhile, all other performances are mediocre and never overly brilliant or under par. But, over all these positive comments, their is one main negative comment, and that is the character build. In Scream 4, the main character is meant to be Jill Roberts, the new Sidney, and her little gang of friends, while we do get a little look into the lives of our original three. All characters do not seem very developed, and we never have one concentrated scene, it almost seems like the film is confused between which character to look at next, new or old, and we don't get that original, ensemble feel of the first, second and even third film. And in my opinion, writer Kevin Williamson should have made the decision, new characters or old, and do not get me wrong, the idea could have worked brilliantly, but instead we have many very short scenes instead of one concentrated scene. So, to sum up, Scream 4 is still very original and is definitely a reboot of the series. It is tense, and some performances are very good, but it almost never reaches the brilliant film it could have been.
Oh, and one last note, you will NEVER guess the killer...
It's like Predator with paintballs...
Paintball may just be the strangest movie i have seen in a long time. Strange setting, strange violence, and just well... strange! Basically you get 8 paintball pros, suddenly one is shot with a real bullet, the group suddenly go into panic and rush round splitting up slowly and getting killed one by one...
Firstly, the beginning of this movie gives no introduction and jumps you straight in their. Usually these kind of movies are good, but no, we do not have a clue who these people are, or where there from. Secondly, one is suddenly killed, but, i didn't know who that was, no one told me! No names are really given to you meaning you don't show any emotion for any characters. Secondly, the deaths in this are hidden, which is actually quite a good technique, only shown through this hunters view, who many times in the film I actually thought would turn out to be Predator! To be honest you didn't know who died or when, it all just shot onto your screen. But worse of all is this dodgy camera work, one minute you think its a hand held camera film, the next you think your watching a normal film! Passing all this aside though, you can sometimes feel a little tense for whats next. An ending I thought was actually pretty good. So to sum up Paintball, it's OK for a straight to DVD movie.
Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Worst of the films, but with a few laughs!
Scary Movie 2 is definitely the worst of the 4 films, for there is not much of a plot , bad acting, pretty tedious and some really cheesy jokes. But. And this is a big but, there is one good actor, one good recurring joke, and a good beginning. The good actor being Tim Curry, the one good recurring joke is the creepy, weird butler with the disgusting hand who always does cringey but laugh worthy things. And the good beginning is the spoof of the Excorsist.
The plot to Scary Movie 2 is the main characters from the original and a host of new characters along the way are invited to stay the night at a creepy old mansion, but will they survive the night? This film is not very good but if your bored you might as well watch it!
Scary Movie 3 (2003)
A good way to re-boot the Scary Movie franchise...
Scary Movie 3, basically a spoof of The Ring, Signs, a bit of The Matrix and its sequel the Matrix Reloaded, and a bit of 8 Mile. Scary Movie 3 may possibly be the scariest of the Scary Movie lot, but it does not over do it and also includes laughs.
Scary Movie 3 is basically a video tape that seems to be killing people 7 days after watching a video tape. Cindy Campbell decides to investigate with the help of her friend and nephews school teacher Brenda Meeks. Meanwhile, crop circles are appearing on a farmer (Tom's) farm. Tom and his brother decide to investigate eventually leading Cindy and the two to meet where they discover the crop circles and the videotape are somehow linked...
A lot of people having given this film mixed reviews but I believe that this film isn't bad! But it isn't brilliant, Scary Movie 3 is just very good! It is funny but the acting is not good, the plots good, but not brilliant. So, to sum all this up Scary Movie 3 is good and very funny. So if I were you I'd just watch it for the sake of a few laughs!
Scary Movie 4 (2006)
Funniest of the 4 films...
I believe that Scary Movie 4 may be the funniest of the lot, and links the parodies very well together. The only downer with this film is some of the acting, I mean it is good but not brilliant.
The basic plot is Cindy Campbell is recovering from the recent death of the two people closest too her, but when a new man enters her life all is well. Until aliens invade and the creepy old house shes working in is haunted. Cindy ,Tom (the new guy) and the some how resurrected Brenda, must stop the invasion, but it's not gonna be easy...
If your looking for a few small scares but big laughs Scary Movie 4 will be the one for you.
The Best Sci-Fi film in history. (May Contain Spoilers!)
The Best Sci-Fi film in History. When I first watched Alien, I was nervous. People had told me it was a blood splattered film about an alien on a spaceship way in the future. So when i put the DVD in my set, I tried to sit back and relax. But, as the film began I started to think "This isn't actually that bad!" But then when the alien jumps out his chest i thought "Great, another horror/ sci-fi film with no plot. But then I started to get in the film. All the twists and tense scenes, and by the end I was thinking, this film is well and truly AMAZING. And by the end I wanted more! If you are looking for a good tense night in, ALien is for you. In fact Alien is for anyone who loves a great film.
