Friday Night Lights (2004)
Blah Blah Blah
I always think you lose something when you turn a non-fictional account into a 'loosely based' film. This story would have been much better served as a documentary. You know what you are seeing actually happened for the most part, but somehow you are not truly sold. 'Seabiscuit' had the same problem. Though 'Seabiscuit' was actually watchable in my opinion.
Character development seemed quite forced (i.e. - this guy is the quiet guy, this guy is the loudmouth, this guy is the one who wants to leave but is tied to home). The story seemed to drag on. The game scenes were well shot. Most of the movie was well done but unfortunately, the script and general story were not.
Pleasant surprise was Tim McGraw. Though his character was pretty one-dimensional, he did not seem out of place. Perhaps using some of his own experiences as a model.
Anyway, while I am not upset I saw this film, I do not think I would have been upset if I had not. The last twenty minutes are so were quite enjoyable to see in the theater environment (people were actually cheering and applauding). All in all I can see myself watching this on TNT some Saturday afternoon when I long for my memories of playing high school football. But I could not see myself shelling out $10 to see it in a theater.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
It could have been good ...
(CONTAINS SPOILER!!) The story was intriguing but the film was too short and the script was too bad. My friend made the best comment saying that it would have been cooler without the humans. I tend to agree. I think the better film (SPOILER UPCOMING) would have been the film they set up at the end of 'AVP.' An Alien running wild on a Predator vessel. Not sure how the dialogue would work but I am sure grunts and yells would be an improvement over the last script.
It did a good job with the PG-13 rating leaving just the right amount of gore and leaving a lot to the imagination. However, (SPOILER) the film just ran too short. Things happen in quick bunches and then it just ends. However, bump it up to two hours and you will really see the films weakness (bad script).
I feel this could be a franchise where the 2nd film would be much better then the first and, as we all know, Hollywood does not always choose quality when it wants to birth a franchise (mmm. Police Academy).
Fast, Furious, and Ridiculous
A fun movie. Thankfully quite short. Certainly the laws of physics (and character development) do not apply here. A good time well spent if you do not plan on thinking too much (though the ending still has me scratching my head). The kind of film that I did not love but still am not upset I spent the time to watch it.
