Aye, 'tis a bonnie film
While at first I had difficulty grasping the concept of this mystery Scottish town, I soon learn to love and enjoy the music, magic and miracles that unfolded. Gene Kelly, as always, was a real treat to watch. The smile on his face as he sings "Almost like being in love" makes me wish I had been the one to cause that feeling in him! While I am not as huge a fan of Gene's ballet style dancing, it was still wonderful to watch. Cyd Charise, likewise, fantastic in her role and exceptionally pretty. Van Johnson- need I say that his of the cuff remarks add that little bit extra to the film.
All in all, a great movie and one that I will enjoy watching again and again!
Funniest line: "Witches? Oh we have 'em. But we pronounce it differently."
Sweetest line: "I am in love with someone else and I 'canna' get over it"
Corniest line: "Anything is possible when you love someone. Even miracles."
Words and Music (1948)
This movie deceptively roped me in
Not being a huge fan of Mickey Rooney, I was not planning to watch this movie when I saw it beginning to play on TCM. However, I saw the opening credits with the names 'Judy Garland' and 'Gene Kelly' in big letters (even before Mickey Rooney's name I think), and I was convinced to give this movie a chance. It was filled with many musical numbers, and as nice as some of them were, I became exceptionally annoyed and bored as they became less and less relevant! I much prefer musical numbers which add something to the story of the movie. Meanwhile... one and a half hours into it, I was still waiting for Judy and Gene to appear! Finally Judy Garland appeared as herself and performed a lovely song with Mickey Rooney. Then her brief cameo was over. Then, after more waiting, finally Gene Kelly was seen. And I mean exactly that, he was only 'seen'. He did a ridiculous dance number (with none of his beautiful singing) and then had one talking line at the end of the movie, much to my disappointment! While I was a fan of Tom Drakes performance as Richard Rodgers, overall, unfortunately I was disappointed and am not a fan of this movie.
