Grudge Match (2013)
January would have been better
Sylvester Stallone made another boxing movie but it's not Rocky 7. It's Grudge Match and Robert De Niro is Stallone's co star. The premise is two boxing rivals, Razor and Kid come out of retirement to have one final match.
How was it? It was alright, it could have been worse. The writer thinks frequent S bombs is funny and most of them were forced. There's some vulgar humor, only a little would have been better. Some of the jokes were forced, a huge deal or flaw. The grudge match was lame, it was lazy. The ending was abrupt.
The acting was good. De Niro's the best actor here not to my surprise and he didn't phone it in. Stallone may not be a great actor but he can act when he wants to which he did here. Rocky and Rambo are opposites and Stallone was good as both characters. Razor was like Rocky. Kid was rude, overconfident and womanizing. Kevin Hart plays Dante, a loud mouth fight promoter. He was funny and he reminded me of Chris Tucker who is funny also.
I liked the story. The grudge match allowed Razor and Kid to go back to their pasts. Razor reconnected with his ex girlfriend and Kid met his son and grandson. Maybe a lot of people found Razor's story boring. No one can say it's better than Kid's story. This movie is similar to Grumpy Old Men.
This movie was originally scheduled for January and it was pushed forward to December because the test score was high. Maybe that reason was false. I understand why the odd person thinks this is good. I will watch it again eventually, maybe I will laugh a little instead of barely. My hopes weren't high, I didn't think I would laugh out loud ten times or so. You could see this on the big screen but waiting for the DVD is better.
Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
Bugs Bunny versus Elmer Fudd
Elmer Fudd hasn't seen that smart rabbit for awhile and he coincidently runs into him again. This movie is like a cartoon. It stars Clive Own and Paul Giamatti. The premise is a mysterious loner named Smith delivers a baby and he is being pursued by hired goons led by a businessman named Hertz.
I rented this in 2008 and I didn't like it because I wasn't in the right mood. I felt it was so ridiculous and the humor felt lame. I recently decided to give it another shot and I watched it on Netflix. I like it okay, I understand why it bombed. It's insane, brutal and silly. Maybe it would have done okay if it came out in the '80s.
This movie is certainly not for everyone specifically religious folks. Not only is this brutal, it's dirty. There is some sex, mostly in form of one of the shoot-outs! That's crazy and different! The plot is weak as expected and the writer who also directed certainly wasn't trying to give it a strong plot. There is a lack of character development, we know a little of both the hero and the villain. Smith is a bad ass with a heart and Hertz is ruthless and yet he has a wife and son who we never see.
It has a lot of humor, in fact this movie is a dark comedy. I can easily see why people find the humor lame, in fact there are a few risky jokes. Smith and Hertz literally quote Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in one scene. There isn't much CGI, the third to last action scene is a green screen skydiving scene and it sucked. The following action scene sucked also, it's not the length so much as it being so silly. The last one is alright, it's silly.
I doubt I'll see this again. If you like Clive or Paul, you could see this. It's nice Clive wants to do a fun movie once in awhile. I doubt Christian Bale wants to do a fun movie. That random sentence doesn't mean I hate him, far from it.
Furious 6 (2013)
Good but not the best
We're at the sixth movie of the high speed franchise. Dom and his gang are recruited to capture mercenaries who want to create a weapon that will destroy the world.
I might as well tell you guys how I feel about the other movies. The first one is good, I know it's a Point Break rip off but it still feels different kinda like Home Alone 2. The second one is good or decent, not bad, I can write one or two paragraphs on this but I won't bother. The third one is decent for sure and it's the worst. It's a spin off, not exactly a sequel and it easily could have a straight to DVD movie. I allowed myself to see it three times and I won't watch it again. The fourth one is good and it's the first true sequel because Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are in it, not just one of them. The fifth one is the best, it's a heist movie and Dwayne Johnson's character Luke Hobbs is introduced.
Back to Fast Six, it's bigger than the previous movie but not better. The plot is thin, it's bloated and Hobbs is no longer an antagonist. Before the premise was announced, I thought Hobbs would still be chasing Dom and his gang and maybe they would be forced to work together again. Hobbs is still interesting, he doesn't have any boring conversations with Dom but their previous relationship was better. Who knows, maybe they will become antagonists later on.
The action is good and yeah it's ridiculous. Dom is like a superhero and the Iron Giant just popped into my head. There's no shaky cam bullshit and there a lack of CGI. The villain is insane mercenary Owen Shaw played by Luke Evans. He is cliché but still threatening. He doesn't say why he wants to destroy the world, maybe he feels some destruction will help improve the world later on. Unlike the last villain, he doesn't sit around doing paperwork, he drives around and hurts a few people. He smiles during the tank scene which shows he's sadistic.
This movie is lighthearted, it's not gritty like Fast Four or the Dark Knight trilogy or the upcoming Need For Speed movie which I'm looking forward to. There are some jokes and most of them work. I didn't write this review earlier because I didn't feel like writing any reviews and I recently decided I should write some reviews because I enjoy writing.
Fast Seven will be coming out on April 2015 and only time will tell if Brian will get killed off. James Wan is the director, Justin Lin dropped out because he naturally wants to do other movies. I read James wants the action to be more realistic and I like that idea. I also like Jason Statham who is playing the villain and I read he doesn't want to destroy the world. Okay I'm done yapping.
Knockaround Guys (2001)
Average gangster movie
Vin Diesel was my reason for seeing this and it was worthy. This movie is average on the good side, it's worth watching once and I don't think I'll watch this again. The premise is a gangster loses money at a small town airport so his three friends travel there to help him find the money so they won't get killed.
Barry Pepper is the lead, he plays Matty, I forgot his last name, it's not important, the son of a New York Mafia under boss. He wants to become a citizen, have a normal life but he can't because no one wants to hire him because of his father. He's likable, he's an anti-hero who wants to do his job and not hurt anyone. Vin Diesel plays a tough guy, a muscular guy named Taylor. The character may be a typical Vin Diesel character but he isn't one dimensional. Seth Green plays Johnny Marbles, the guy who lost the money. He's paranoid, he naturally wants to make up for his error and he's supposed to be a funny character. Yes the acting is great, in fact that's the bread and butter or cherry.
According to a few other reviews here this movie has some subtle dark humour. The humour sucked for me, maybe a few jokes will make me laugh if and when I'll watch this again. The movie's pace is fine, I never felt bored and anyone can find the first half hour slow. There are a few weak surprises and no I won't spoil them. Don't expect a lot of action or violence, maybe every movie store chain labelled this as an action movie. It's weird the Ocean movies are labelled that way and the first Pirates movie is labelled as a drama. This movie is an okay time killer, it's worth renting or watching on TV which I did.
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
Good but not great
Cowboys and Aliens stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Daniel's role was written for Robert Downey Jr. whom was interested but he had to drop out to do Sherlock Holmes 2 which is a good movie, better than the first. The plot is Daniel's character wakes up in the outskirts of some town with amnesia, it doesn't take long for him to find out he's an outlaw, he meets a grumpy rancher played by Harrison and the town is attacked by aliens.
I understand why some hate this movie. I think it's good but not great. Combining the western genre and the science fiction genre is unique but the plot is certainly not new. The plot is weak but it's not a big deal. It's nothing more than fighting aliens and Daniel's character uncovering his past. Some think every character is weak and that's fine but I feel there is some character development , specifically the leads.
The aliens are CG creatures, practical creatures would have been nice, they are bland and that means they are just targets, blips or whatever to shoot while on your way to work or maybe the dentist. Not showing the aliens in the marketing was a nice idea, some trailers like to show everything. The Super 8 marketing didn't show the alien and hopefully this "showing the whole movie" phase or period will die.
How is the action? It's explosive and clear. I hate shaky cam and it's probably worth mentioning I didn't mind the shaky cam in The Bourne Supremacy. Nothing new happens and surprisingly there is some blood.
Is is worth seeing? I feel it's worth a chance, it was made as a popcorn flick from the beginning. I seen it only once and I see myself watching it only once more.
Super 8 (2011)
Good sci-fi thriller! Something different for once!
This movie is noteworthy because it's not a franchise movie or an adaptation, the cast are completely or mostly unknowns and the alien wasn't shown in the marketing.
It takes place in the '70s in a small Ohio town. Several teens, five boys and one girl are making a Super 8 movie at a train station, a train crashes into a truck, an alien escapes and a few nasty, weird things occur. This movie is fun, compelling, touching and maybe scary. What I mean by "maybe scary" is I used to be a wimp when it comes to being scared in the theater, I would cover my ears when a horror movie trailer comes on or when a scary scene or moment is going on, I no longer do that, I will give the scary elements a chance to scare me.
Everything about the movie is good. Don't worry, I won't spoil anything, especially not the alien. The teens were written realistically, they hang out, joke, curse and sometimes do what is right. There is enough humor to help entertain the audience, if there were hardly any, this movie wouldn't be as enjoyable.
This movie is a homage to old Spielberg movies and it really works like that. If it wasn't a homage to Spielberg movies, I guess it would be less enjoyable or bad. If you like ET, The Goonies or Close Encounters which I haven't seen yet, watch this. This movie is a real treat and no this isn't a catchphrase.
Fast Five (2011)
This is a fun, mindless action movie. If you enjoy this, you must see this!
This is a damn good action movie. You don't need to see all the other movies prior to seeing this, only the first one and the fourth one.
It starts immediately after the last one ended. Dom played by Vin Diesel, Brian played by Paul Walker and Mia played by Jordana Brewster are hiding in Brazil, they do a job and they are being chased by a federal agent named Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne Johnson and a drug lord named Hernan Reyes played by Joaquim de Almedia. The plot is thin but it's still interesting, there is little more than planning for the next job or phase and a thin plot is better than no plot. No plot would just be running and gunning, talking and resting and maybe having sex once.
The action is great, loud and mindless, if you only like realistic action movies, avoid this. Unlike the other movies, this isn't a racing movie, this is a heist movie with racing in it, similar to The Italian Job, I only seen the remake which was okay I guess. Some people hate the fact that the series has taken a new direction and it's understandable but I think taking new directions is a great way, probably the best way to make a series entertaining a while longer instead of allowing it to become boring. Slasher movies are the opposite of taking a new direction, still a slasher movie could be universally hated if aliens suddenly show up and the killer helps his victims kill the aliens.
Why didn't I give this movie a perfect score? The plot is thin, there isn't much character development, Joaquim's character is bland, the acting is mediocre, and maybe the serious dialogue is bad, I haven't noticed any bad dialogue before seeing it but it may happen the next time I see it. Speaking of acting, Vin Diesel shows a little more emotion than usual and although Dwayne hasn't done that too, he still is entertaining and he's probably the best actor or performer in the movie. There is a short, surprising scene halfway through the credits, you really should see it.
I had a lot of fun with this, it's too bad I seen it alone. The DVD is coming out on October 5, six months after it came out and I'm not sure if I'll get the DVD alone or the DVD/Blu Ray combo pack. I'm looking forward to Fast Six which comes out on May 2013 and hopefully that will be the last, six movies is enough.
