Big Bird in Japan (1988)
I love this movie!!
I have loved this movie since I was a kid!! It's classic Sesame Street genius! You get to learn some Japanese: "Ohio means 'Good morning,' that's my favorite one." You also get to hear the very interesting story of The Bamboo Princess. It's so great, and there are excellent shots of Japan. Big Bird and Barkley are traveling all over Japan, because they got separated from their tour group, so it really gives the viewer a chance to see some areas of Japan. The two befriend a young woman, who is leaving Japan the same time they will be. They go along with her to say good-bye to her friends. Along the way, they learn some Japanese words and customs and get to eat yummy Japanese food. It's an excellent movie to watch when your a kid or if you have kids or whenever. It's so cute.
It was good, but it did not live up to the book, which was a touching, beautiful, masterpiece. It was rather disappointing. The only thing truly worthwhile was the performance of Audrey Tautou, and the visual effects. It too often strayed from the book. I recommend it, but I most likely wont be watching it again.
It was very Jeunet-esquire. I love his work, but it may have been better if someone else had been the director. There were things changed from the book that was so wrong to have changed! Some rather important plot points, were altered. Taking things out and changing things is a constant crime in the book-to-film process.
