Death of a Ghost Hunter (2007)
B horror that really delivers!
Death of a Ghost Hunter is one of the B horror flicks that goes straight to DVD without anyone ever hearing about it. Well I had wanted to check it out on Netflix for quite a while because of the creepy cover art for the flick and I decided, why the hell not and just watched it, thinking if anything I would get a laugh out of it. Yes it is one of those cheesy half fake documentary half actual regular film movies but it actually really works well. The special effects are complete crap, but you can look past that into the messed up storyline that the movie brings up. Typical ghost, haunted house flick, with a freaking surprise ending. I must say I'm impressed that this little independent film was so interesting. It had me interested throughout the entire film. It tied up all the lose ends at the very end which made the plot come together nicely. I would definitely recommend this film to someone who is looking for an interesting movie to watch. It's a little scary (IMHO) but not scary enough that you couldn't sleep afterward.
Welcome to the Rileys (2010)
Hello and Goodbye from the Rileys
While this movie looks good, looks can definitely be deceiving. I felt as if I was watching the boring life of an underage stripper and the people who come to live with her and adopt her (in a dysfunctional sort of way) into their family. The plot is fairly simple as you can see and with a few changes to the plot it could have been a fairly decent film. Unfortunately it falls short with Kristen Stewart dropping F bombs left and right and a creepy dude staying with her (and eventually his wife) and treating her like his daughter. I didn't think it was a very good film as the acting from Kristen Stewart was nothing less than boring and unemotional. Would I recommend this? Only to people who will go gaga over Kristen Stewart and want to watch her whore it up on screen in a strip club and see her almost naked a few times. That's about it folks. The film has no depth, the only thing we learn is that life is hard for strippers, which we can get that from watching plenty of Lifetime films about struggling strippers and prostitutes. No plot development (until the last five minutes), no character development (A tad from Stewart's character and Lois), a climax that fizzles out midway and no resolution whatsoever.
Okay so whoever decided to think of writing the plot for this movie needs to go take some writing lessons and learn how a plot is developed. Also, they need to learn how to produce some decent effects in B-horror films such as these. If you're giving a movie the green light, please make sure it's at least decent. Most of the time I thought it was shot using a hand-held camera and a green screen! The actors were absolutely horrible and not likable at all, the characters were undeveloped which made the movie awkward and the plot just seemed to fall apart. I mean an idea like this had potential but I guess the writers, effects artists, actors and director just wanted to hurry and get this film over with. Cinder is a hateful girl, a real snob. I don't know why her friend would be in love with her. She's just a total witch. Why is Cash so obsessed with Cinder? Why does it take her forever to realize her friend is in love with her? Why is she a kleptomaniac? This films lack of a decent plot raises too many questions. I definitely hated the movie and would never watch it again, nor recommend it to anyone. I guess that's what you get for watching a movie on YouTube.
