Get Smart (2008)
Hilarious, kinda takes your mind off the plot
I wanted to watch Get Smart ever since I saw the trailer where it shows Max having a hard time opening the door in the phone booth. As usual, I waited for the DVD to come out. The first thing that stood out in my mind was the main character Steve Carrell. The movie starts with hilarious moments after 5 minutes. After that, every few minutes there would be something funny. However, there were too many funny parts that blinded me from seeing the plot.
Overall, this movie is enjoyable and is worth watching a second time just to enjoy the humor again.
Go watch it because it's worth watching 7/10
District 9 (2009)
Nothing like I've ever seen
The first time I saw the trailer to District 9, I lost interest because I thought that it's just another alien movie with its cliché plot. However the name Peter Jackson on the poster caught my attention so I decided to wait for the DVD to come out to watch. Between this time, all of my friends kept telling me, "Dude, District 9 is the best movie ever made. You have to see it". This made me become even more interested. After watching "Avatar", I thought that "Avatar" was the best movie of 2009. Some of my friends disagreed. Some said that "Sherlock Holmes" was the best and some said "District 9" was the best. The DVD came out and I borrowed it. I bought the DVD immediately after I returned it.
District 9 is a movie with a plot unlike any other alien movies. The beginning could be boring at some times and could be shortened. If you're looking for a sci-fi fantasy movie with good action, a good plot, and some good music, watch District 9. Don't rent it, BUY IT. I have seen this movie around six times already and it never fails to impress me. Everything about the movie was well done, especially the acting and the cinematography. After some bad-ass action, the movie finishes with one of my favorite movie endings of all time. You will not be disappointed. Now I can tell my friends my opinion about which movie is the best of 2009, and my choice would be District 9.
Go watch it, NOW! 10/10
The Grudge (2004)
The Grudge was basically what a normal remake is: copying the original with nothing new added to it. The Grudge followed Ju-On very well actually and included some scenes from the video version. However, the acting was the first thing that disappointed me, since they were nowhere near the acting of the Japanese people.
Even though The Grudge followed the original very well, it later becomes its biggest flaw. It becomes way too predictable. You already know what's going to happen. And on top of that, when the remade scene is finally shown, it's not as good as the original because the atmosphere is all missing. Instead, it's only a scary face scaring the audience. This is the main difference between American horror and foreign horror. American horror focuses on scaring, while foreign focuses of mood. Masterpieces of horror like Ju-On should best be left alone.
But then again, the movie was still successful on scaring people. Worth borrowing, not worth buying. 5/10
A chilling movie that you always remember
Ju-On is a simple, chilling, and well-executed movie for its time. The story tells about a brutal murder inside a house, leaving a curse behind. Then a bunch of victims get dragged into the mess and get some frightening experiences, and deaths.
The atmosphere and mood was the main thing that kept this movie going and attracting the audience. The ghosts show up when you least expect it, along with some scary music in the background. Some scenes have no music at all to increase the tension, kinda used in "Signs".
This movie would leave you breathless and scared out of your minds. You will push every door from a room that you enter. You will always sleep with one eye open. You will always be sensitive to tiny sounds around the house. And most of all, you will be afraid of the dark once again.
Ju-On is recommended to be watched every Halloween at night. 10/10
