My Little Eye (2002)
This May Be a Masterpiece (spoiler)
In short, take all the positive comments about this film from the other threads discussing its content, and this forms a synthesis of why I think the film is very good. Things like the truly innovative and risky camera work, the raw fear and "Blair Witch like" realism in the scene with the bird in the attic, all the things people brought out above. These factors make it very good and unique but what makes it one of the greats, particularly within its genre, is the last ten five minutes. Groundbreaking.
The inexorable hopelessness and unjust cruelty at the end was so risky its amazing they pulled it off. I saw it in Bangkok Thailand before it was released in the States and was surprised it wasn't banned here. What happened plotwise at the end was clear - the two final survivors set the whole thing up for the rich guys looking in, they planting one teen to murder the others and he thinks he's in on it until they finally kill him at the end too in order to cover everything up. This is a great horror film but what happens next sets it apart. The realism of the film in general coupled with the fate of the lead girl was disturbing. Left suffering, either to slowly die in horrible agony or be tortured further for the cameras. And there's no hope for her, unlike most movies "My Little Eye" ends with the main character being left to die horrifically. Not like Mel Gibson's William Wallace dying for a cause, or the standard slasher deaths of teens in Friday The 13th horror flicks - here just an innocent girl tortured to death to stimulate a group of unseen rich deviants. And thus it ends. What was the last line against... "she's a squirmer"? WOW.
