Poor Things (2023)
Brilliant
It's rare to come across a script that is so unique and different that it is also brilliant. Kudos to this screenplay writer, director, and amazing actors who created an interesting, gore-y, shockingly direct, beautiful, confusing, and provocative story.
The production design is extremely clever, unexpected, yet surprisingly complementary, giving the film a beautiful, ethereal feel to balance the realistic and direct dialogue.
This is literally a film you cannot predict! There is conflict and obstacles, but not worn out, played out arcs normally seen.
It took me a while to get into it, but in 15 minutes I became more engrossed and curious to see where this was going. I was not disappointed!
Solace (2015)
Ugh if it weren't for the horrible script..!
Oh my gosh, who wrote this script? It's like newbie 20-yo indie kid who didn't go to college. Immediately, I was turned off by the horrible idioms and clichés. It is such a disappointment and frankly, I'm embarrassed and feel bad for these marvelous actors (but you wouldn't know because of the horrible script and dialogue).
The story is interesting but I just kept wanting to barf at the continued clichés and idioms. I think I could write better dialogue.
Since the actors are stellar , especially Sir Anthony Hopkins and Collin Farrell, I chose to continue watching. Unfortunately, the story just isn't believable to hold up either, and it's a shame because if they had just tweaked one little thing that made it unbelievable, it could've been much better (minus the horrible dialogue again and clichés!).
Masters of the Air (2024)
No character development until episode six!
I'm actually surprised I kept watching this series. Apple seems to have gotten a few good series right but still struggling on the rest of them.
For me, "Masters of the air" was boring and cliché until we got to episode five (!) and then it started getting interesting. This is also when we also started getting a glimpse of character development. Hoping that this will continue, and I will actually be interested in these characters.
The funny thing is that title doesn't seem to fit the movie at all. There wasn't a lot of "mastering" in there except by one or two pilots.
Other than that blah blah.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Loved this move and suspect....
I suspect there were some very uncomfortable men watching this who either didn't review or quickly gave it a low one lol
Cleaver, both comedy and drama -dramedy-dark and humorous, poignant. Carrie Mulligan was great as ever, taking on the character and seeming as different as she does for every role.
This is a movie about both nice men and a-holes. It's enlightening about sex, culture, universities, cover-ups, and other a consistent patriarchal society that dominates amd represses women-however, in this upcoming age of #MeToo, it is the time for women to fight back and have a voice. This movie does that-WITH A TWIST.
You'll love it.
One of the best movies I've watched in a long time. Can't believe I hadn't heard of it earlier. Hmmm could this be due to promising young, male executives??
Regardless...Highly recommend.
Colette (2018)
Outstanding acting and well worth seing
If you're homophobic you will not like this film. Might as well throw that out there in the beginning. But....
If you have a more mature, open mind or just appreciate excellent acting, you will not be disappointed.
With maturity and more life experience behind her, Keira Knightley has turned into an exceptional actress. She was a very good actress before and now I would raise her among the best of them.
Dominic also does an awesome job playing her husband, the narcissistic, drunken, gambling libertine.
Of course they changed some things from the real truth, but overall it is a very captivating and interesting story.
Clickbait (2021)
Addicting whodunit
Very engrossing. You keep wanting to go to the next episode to figure out the whole story and the whodunit of it all. Other than that, really nothing too special about it but the Great script and decent acting keeps you wanted to continue.
It's shot in the bay area particularly the Eastbay - supposed to take place in Oakland, CA, so that's a bit fun for those of us that Know the area. Recognizable actors but no one really famous, so almost has this Indie feel to it. I suspect at least hope a lot of them are local.
Some interesting cop drama added in, almost reminds me of a detective novel when its focused on the Muslim Iranian detective. So the focus is just not on the police or just the McDermott and or the family but everyone, and that does add some extra texture.
Emily in Paris (2020)
I love this show!
Maybe it's the fact that I lived in Paris for a little bit that helps me understand the French characters better, but I also think it's just a very cute and sweet show.
The tension between the French guy, and Emily is palpable , and the characters who work at the marketing agency are amusing and some extremely Parisian, especially the head of the company.
The tension they create is good and keeps me wanting more at the very end.
And who doesn't like to see beautiful clothing and beautiful Paris?? There are so beautiful shots of the countryside and castles. Oh, what fun!!!
Give it a shot!!!
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Special effects great. Acting, directing and editing not so
The first thing you need to know is that the story takes place before the lord of the rings trilogy. To me I find that fascinating and increased my desire to watch.
However, I find the directing and editing to be especially bad. Regarding the editing it's like they're trying to mimic the style of The Lord of the Rings and completely failing. It's embarrassing really some scenes!
Some of the actors, especially if they main elf, Elrond, and the dwarf Prince, are very good and interesting to watch.
But, for me there's a huge mismatch between the Galadriel we know from the Lord of the Rings movies and this one. Why? Probably because this movie is NOT based on any of the Tolkein stories. This one is impatient, old, reckless. Not the mellow one we know from lord of the rings!
They did to research however from his books on trying to create story around middle earth and when the rings were created. For that, I do find it interesting and the special effects are good.
So I definitely will keep watching and that's why I rated it a seven. Galadriel gets a four.
The Sinner (2017)
Fantastic story lines in acting from Bill Pullman
I have watched all seasons, including four/4, the most recent as of October 2022.
Bill Pullman is perfectly cast for the part have the detective. He plays an unassuming, smart but introverted, inquisitive detective who has a way of dragging the truth out of the multitude of players in the mystery such a delicate but unabashed way.
He's very curious and cares for the suspects, but he also has an obsession for finding the Real truth in all cases, and this is what makes him so successful.
All the characters cast of an extremely good actors. The scripts are extremely well written, directed and edited.
Kudos to Jessica Biel the Producer and Bill creating a delightful but complex character.
Mayor of Kingstown (2021)
Great script, lousy directing and acting
Dialogue in scripture great. Story is very interesting, but Could be so much more without the horrible acting and lousy accents - on everyone (this is supposed to be Michigan guys not New York!) Made me give up on episode three.
NOT Jeremy Renner's Best performance. He's got it when he's not talking apparently Lol.
The character actors do a much better job, even his "older brother" in the series is a better actor and he sadly leaves the season very soon.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
One of the best crime drama suspense shows I've seen
Starts off a little slow but gets really good as you move through the story. I was constantly surprised by the complicated characters and twists in plot. You literally can never guess what's going to happen next! The characters are rich. The acting superb - Plus a cameo by a famous actor.
One of the best screenplays and directing I have seen in a long time. The way the director/Editor cuts between scenes of the different characters is amazing, done so well.
I really hope they win some awards. They should!
Becoming You (2020)
Amazing. Stupendous. Beautiful.
I don't know how anyone can give it less than 10 stars!
Beautiful cinematography, amazingly interesting, Overall incredibly worth it. I'm not usually into documentaries but thought I would check this out on Apple TV+ since there are so few things to watch on there (why I am sure we get a free 1 yr subscription). I'm so glad I did!
I'd say anyone over the age of 13 would be very interested in this documentary, and especially anyone who works with children or related field like psychology
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Excellent film from start to finish!
Amazing acting, directing, etc. Overall a splendid series that will definitely win some awards. Even if you don't think you are much of a chess enthusiast, you will be drawn in by the interesting story and outstanding acting by the formidable player Beth Harmon acted by Anya Taylor-Joy, whom I hope wins an award.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Hated it. Didn't think it was funny at all.
Hopefully don't understand how people think this show is so great! I had friends on Facebook say it gets better but it never did. I finally gave up on episode nine. It's so cliché and unoriginal. Acting is good however.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Slow to start but turns out it's really great!
It's like a really long novel that's hard to get through the first Half but I promise I gets much better and then really good! Hang in there!
Wild Oats (2016)
Really cute & funny!
Surprised at the poor review. We lived this film! Clever, unexpected, funny, clever lines, and of course superb acting by Shirley McLaine and Jesica Lange. Demi Moore was just ok.
Worth the watch! (Not a 10 but wanted to bump up the score. I give it a 7-8).
Cursed (2020)
Thought it was great and I'm picky!
I was really surprised at this series ratings. 5.7? Are they kidding? I expected it to be a five or six but I give it an 8. I gave it 10 stars here because the rating really needed to be elevated!
I thought it was going to be one of those cheesy teenager flics, but it really surprised me. It was addictive and constantly surprised me with every twist and turn. A combination of Games of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and King Arthur, and fairy tale, it has everything that the most popular films have been made of. It could've easily flunked if it didn't have such great acting and directing.
OK some of it was a little cheesy I admit; the fake hooves on the humans to look like fey dear type could've been done much better. When Merlin gets his power back at the end it seems a bit over the top.
Pretty sure they're going to do a season 2. Hope it's as good!
Regarding Henry (1991)
Harrison Ford is an amazing actor in this film
I loved this movie when it came out because it showed what a talented dramatic actor Harrison Ford is.
I agree with many of the reviews that this movie is HIGHLY UNDERRATED! I suspect the people who gave it low reviews are people who were expecting Indiana Jones but don't appreciate and actors hard work. This is why I gave it 10 stars to make up for the lousy, misguided reviews.
If you like Harrison Ford and can respect the craft, you will love this film!
The King (2019)
Will be Nominated
Most films play was historical accuracy. If you're watching the film for that you will be disappointed. However, this is an extremely well-made, well acted and well written movie! Chalamet is superb. So is Robert Pattinson. I imagine both of them will get nominated for their outstanding work.
Something thought it was too long. I didn't feel that at all. I did skip through war scenes tho as that's not my thing, but overall it kept me in suspense, and that's quite an achievement for this type of film!
City on a Hill (2019)
Kevin Bacon is Amazing
Hope Kevin Bacon wins some deserving awards for his outstanding acting. He makes the show. Otherwise, the story is okay. Good perspective on Boston "Southies," police & FBI corruption and racism.
Ashes in the Snow (2018)
RECOMMEND! Glad this film was made
It's really important to understand the atrocities and oppression of the Russian government over Eastern Europeans. This film takes place during World War II but even under the Tsar/Czar in the late 1800's and early 1900's, Russia was trying to erase Lithuanian and other conquered cultures with such things as Banning the local language and books.
This film shows us that the Russians were not much better than the Nazis when it came to concentration/labor camps. Without spoilers, it's heartbreaking and horrible what they did to millions of people from the 1930s to the 1950s. I have Lithuanian family who were deported to Siberia and not released for 15 years! Watching this you will understand what they say and so many went through.
Another Life (2019)
Five different directors says it all
Sometimes you blame the writers but usually you blame the director since the director is in charge of the final cut. This series seemed so disjointed and now that I see that there were five directors who directed two episodes each I can see why. I can't imagine they did that on purpose ( if so the experiment did not work!), so there must've been drama on set for them to hire and fire or have directors quit so quickly.
Some episodes are too predictable, some have too much action, others are decent, but overall like I said disjointed and like a new writer/director that doesn't quite have the sophistication of the years behind them.
The only reason I watched it until the end is because I was too darn curious what the aliens were up to! So that tension was done right, although when you get to that point it also feels disjointed.
The ABC Murders (2018)
John Malkovich is a horrible Poirot!
Dear John Malkovich, please never speak French or try to have a French accent ever again. It was her horrendous! It was so painful watching him. 😱
The story however was very good and I usually guess who does it but not in the story. I was very surprised at the end.
If you can get milk if through Malkovich'd horrible accent then the story is worth it. But because it was so difficult to watch I only gave it 6 stars. The story I would give 8 stars.
Mrs Wilson (2018)
Very good mystery/intrigue
I had no idea what the story was about when I watched it just thought it had great reviews and I was thoroughly delighted. It's not a typical mystery story - don't get the wrong impression - But there is a mystery to be solved and intrigue. Will keep you guessing and wondering until the end. Very well done, great acting, good casting, and very interesting that Ruth Wilson, the actress and leading character, actually plays her own grandmother in this amazing, surprising story! It's also funny that she plays another character named Allison.
Free State of Jones (2016)
A little bit slow until the end but extremely valuable
This movie is a bit slow for 3/4 of it but I encourage you to continue watching because there is valuable history and information in the last quarter that, even if you've read in the history books, you may not fully appreciate until watching this film.
