Outcasts (2010–2011)
1/10
Wow fresh, sexy, stylish action adventure.... NO casualty in space!
8 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
At last the old fossil(the BBC)have thrown out there old thinking just for once and just to see what it feels like they have decided to, front this new adult themed sci-fi with a group of smart, sexy and likable, 20-30 somethings.By tapping are under used resource of good looking actors(yes we do have them)for this high concept contemporary sci-fi masterpiece.Outcasts explode's on to are screens like a much needed breath of fresh air.

Are hero is a balance of what every male viewer wants to be like. And what every female viewer wants to bed and the rest of the characters, bring there own unique quality's .The eye popping sets and costumes are like peeling back an onion they are so well designed and purpose built with fine details you expect in sci-fi.The weekly stories are tightly scripted with action packed adventures and a good pace by Pitting are hero's against the universe! OK OK i know the alien monsters and landscape's look like something out of itv's primeval ,but there on a TV budget after all.At least there trying something completely new for a late evening show instead of dreary depressing reality based shows. Anyway this should sell the world over as word spreads, rewarding the hard work put in by all involved at the BBC by,building a fan base and will probably run for a few years.

Ummm OK my negative review is better explained via a positive ex-sample. Take everything i said above and turn it bad and i mean a complete opposite i mean how wrong can the BBC get it?

A while ago i read that Jamie bamber was going to be in a BBC drama about colonising a distant planet,i thought oh great i like him i also like SCi-fi too,but then i seen the promo pictures i started to get disappointed. OK i was not expecting all in one shiny silver romper suits and bulbous ray guns, but come on straight off the rack cargo pants and t-shirts and a back pack that looks like one i bined a few years ago etc,not so much as a uniform or insignia on any of them for starters just a number. Then comes the look of the show a shabby albeit(silvery Gray) shack. in a very nice but familiar looking forest setting but we do get two moons(i think) i mean we are on another planet after all. Ahh then comes the characters, Jaime bamber as seen in front and centre of all the other characters on the promos, pictures and TV spots. This will be are handsome square jawed hero perhaps!!, Well no!! (you'll see).

No that role goes to Poe faced regular Joe Cass and angry Scott Fleur, then the there's weepy Stella TV regular Hermione Norris playing Ros from spooks again but crying every episode,so shes not just Ros from spooks again. Also leaves behind humanoid skeletons because they look like a family never mind the fact they may hold the key to life on carpathia. Then there's are haggard and stubbly mild mannered hallucinating president YAWN!.

The look of the show is non existent the half-arsed sets of mis-matched odd's and end's from old bit's of something else butted up together. costumes "Erm design something purpose made err no we could be bothered ,just bring your own clothes and guns no one will notice". The style is just straight like they where filming eastenders or alike and don't talk to me about budgets when they sent them to south Africa. Including some of there family members for a couple of months and kept them, now there's no money left for anything on screen.

Then the set up welcome to ST carpathia hospital open for taking in strays once a week every week for a full hour, weather permitting!then. Everyone of quality died one way or other leaving all dropouts and deadbeats to just hang around wondering where there next beer is coming from.no characters to admire or inspire us the viewers. The script "it's a human story" yes day to day talk about nothingness and domestic dis-harmony about looking after the kids and going for a drink/getting drunk after work and shaging around! "he was alright actually" says Stella and some substance abuse plot. I thought this was Sci-fi not another bloody back street soap Opera. It does not seem to matter what the BBC give there script writers werewolves vampires and ghosts in the half decent being human, The end of the world in survivors, now where across the universe and the scripts are still always the god dam same. Domestically based boring crap with ugly people hating there dull lives, imagine the BBC script writers to come up with something like that.

Who cares the BBC obviously don't ,if this was another Jane Austin period drama they pump out every couple of years they would be. Beautiful costumes, lush scenery and great attention to everything from little details about the way they talk to the world around them. But i guess it only Sci-fi and in this "outcasts" lacks in everything from Scope and vision, imagination ,likeable characters and a script that packs a punch but most of all a high concept and a bigger budget.

Please BBC if your listening leave Sci-fi to the Americans there much better at his kind of thing ,you can not compete . And looking at where it's going there's not going to be much to get excited about.no aliens or alien landscapes no star ships battling or real missions etc. Basically a kitchen sink drama on carpathia i can hardly wait! Now the BBC will not go near a sci-fi project for another ten years. Well we tried sci-fi and it did'nt work they say scratching there heads. No BBC you didn't do sci-fi at all, sack all your script writers and give your ideas to writers and people who want to do them, over and out!

Toast (2010 TV Movie)
9/10
What a great food fight!
2 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Toast is the story of renowned food writer Nigel slaters childhood experience with food or really lack there of. Based on his autobiographical novel of the same name. Filmed in almost permanent amber hue of childhood memories, and with a better than average quality of weekly drama the BBC like to pump out. Firstley Nigel's mother has no love of food, she hate's fresh veg(they have dirt on them)and any thing new or foreign sounding. She boil's tined food in there tins in water in a over-sized pan and hate's every moment of it. This really vex's poor young Nigel who find passion in food & cooking. His first taste of food knowledge comes form the hot male gardener. Whom tender's there garden and Nigel likes to spy on him as he gets naked in the shed from his day in his work clothes. Soon enough Nigel's long suffering mum dies of a Asama attack. And Nigel's dad employs new cleaner Mrs potter(Helena Bonham carter) In reality this reunites actors Freddie high more(older 18 yr old Nigel) with Helena Bonham carter for a third time, they first worked together on women talking dirty when Freddie was 7,before Helena played his mother in Tim Burton's Charlie and the chocolate factory.

Nigel and Mrs potter hate each other on sight, being nothing like Nigel's mother, Mrs potter swears, smokes and cooks well, the latter you think would help them find common ground but no. They battle it out (lot's of fun to watch by the way)for his dads affections. And as Mrs potter Nigel's dad get together and all 3 move to the countryside much to Nigel's destine,he finds work in a local pub as a kitchen hand (boiling bags of frozen food for 20 Min's a piece). He meet the owners boy who's a whizz in the kitchen and quickly fall's in love. i don't want to give much more away than that really but watching toast was a delightful treat from the BBC and the only thing i have not deleted from my planner after watching this Christmas.all in all a great drama 9 out of 10,thank you.
