There is only one way to describe "The Other Conquest". That word would be a "Painting." Every time I watch this film it seems as if it a historically accurate master piece painting. The reason for that is -- one can pause every frame and be able to examine everything and everyone on that frame. Anything from fantastic cinematography, production design to powerful expressions. One may study the frame for hours and discover something new. The story was told through powerful visuals as well as spectacular performances. This movie is about two hours long that feel like ten minutes. It is a great historical masterpiece that keeps you at the edge of your seat. A must see film!

Emir Kusturica's powerful directing as well as magnificent acting performances really make this film an outstanding piece of history. As the characters are introduced, it is amazing how fast a film viewer sinks deep within characters. I think what really helps the film so much is the production design. The setting seemed so authentic. The setting seemed so detailed. Every little detail in a scene had a story of their own. Anything from a fork on a table to a painting on the wall. Every object had a story of it's own. Overall It is a visually stunning film, full of inspiration and cries.

Jan Svankmajer is an enlightening, funny and an intelligent director. His shorts are simply genius and entertaining. The most fascinating thing about his shorts is their meaning. All of the shorts are filled with metaphors, deep philosophy and psychology. It is great how Svankmajer can represent political and family type issues using simple objects or clay figures. It might take a while to understand what the artist really says, but one can certainly come up with a valid explanation. Most of his shorts are self-interpreted. Another words, a person A might understand it differently from person B. It was a tremendous watching experience.

A psychological drama with a great tone., 16 December 2008

One of Bergman's saddest and depressing films. The film is a true eye opener in terms of exceptional cinematography and production design. The interior of the house is red -- which symbolizes the inside of a soul. The color red was an ideal pick for the tone of this film. The character development is fantastic. When Bergman introduces each sister -- it feels as if there is something more to them. Another words, the three sisters are filled with secrets. Secrets which include betrayal and quite possible cheating. It is intriguing to see the three sisters struggle with their lives. Even though the sisters are rich, neither of them are happy. Overall, it is a must see psychological drama filled with a variety of unstable emotions.

This film is one of Luis Bunuel's best films. The most intriguing aspect of this film is a change of tone. It is fantastic to see the tone change time to time. Certain scenes would start out very serious and at the end it will leave one crying from laughter. For some reason it seemed so good because it was something different and not cliché. The film somewhat seemed extraterrestrial because of it's surrealism and overall atmosphere. Phantom of Liberty really open's up one mind and plays with all the possible senses. The experience is truly exceptional. It is a must see, the film will make one doubt, laugh and cry. (well, cry from laughter)

This film was truly a visually pleasing experience. Every frame was like a painting. Yimou Zhang's cinematographer vision truly brought this movie into a new level. A large variety of close-ups really revealed the true character's personality. The most intriguing technical feature of the film were the sound effects. The soundtrack was very subtle and really allowed a movie watcher to sink deep within the story. Especially during the father's (Takata) close-ups. The sound effects such as: wind, ocean, birds and etc. really allowed one to experience the inside of the soul. The soundtrack symbolized how empty and and also how full one's soul can be. This film is a true masterpiece of Yimou Zhang.

This movie truly opened up all the possible senses. A combination of great sound effects as well as exceptional cinematography made the audience feel as if he or she is actually in the film. This kind of experience is usually a rare one. The other great aspect of the film is acting. The main character truly opened up my eyes of what it is like to be present on a war front. The most fascinating part of the film -- is actually seeing the main character age. Considering that Elem Klimov did not use real actors, the acting performances were magnificent. Overall, it is a great foreign film that is must see.
