Leaves of Grass (2009)
Another Edward Norton Tour de Force
I don't normally write too many reviews but I was compelled to write a review on this one as this movie made me feel involved from start to finish.Tim Blake Nelson has done a terrific job coming up with something as creative as this.It does have the atmosphere of a Coen Brothers dark comedy but thats what made it all the more enjoyable for me.
The acting is one of the top reasons why I really liked this movie and Edward Norton shows exactly why he is one of the best at what he does. Its really a shame that this didn't get the recognition it so truly deserved. Its got a bit of both humor and drama in it and all you Edward Norton fans won't be disappointed.
Phenomena (1985)
Psycho Chimp,Retard family,Bugs,Flies,Maggots,Heavy Metal music and Pleasance as Entomologist...
Let me tell you this sure ain't the creepiest movie that I have ever seen but it sure was entertaining.I mean come on when you have all the above put together in one movie along with Jennifer Connelly, obviously you are guaranteed non-stop fun.The movie does feel a bit outdated at certain times but because of the diversity that it offers, you really wont be disappointed in the end.The final few minutes of the movie are especially filled with plenty of action, excitement and will keep you on the edge of your seats.Jennifer Connelly gives a bodacious performance...She was only 14 when this was filmed. The rest of the cast aren't atrocious either.I felt that the Chimp gave a totally badass performance and Donald Pleasance gives a decent performance as always. But much of the credit should go to the director Dario Argento, who is a legend in this genre for making all these weird ideas work in one movie.
Shutter Island (2010)
Another Scorsese Masterpiece
In all honesty I have to say this is probably the best thriller this year at least as far as my opinion goes.It kept me guessing throughout and I was left spellbound simply because of the way the story was told.Scorsese just goes on to show us why he is the best at what he does and his diverse talent in filmmaking.
Di Caprio delivers a flawless performance and I felt Ruffalo really impressed me as an actor in a while. This movie is stunning not only for the above reasons but also visually brilliant. After a long time I got goosebumps not once but multiple times during a movie. This has got great rewatch value and it was worth watching every second of it.
Mona Lisa (1986)
A Lovely Work of Art
I just finished watching this movie and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. This movie reminded me a lot of Taxi Driver with its characters and plot.Bob Hoskins gives an outstanding performance as a lonely loser who is employed as a chauffeur to a call girl(Cathy Tyson). Michael Caine really surprised me with his performance and he really disappears into his character. Neil Jordan has done an admirable job as he has made a movie that will stay in your memories for a long time. This is one of those rare movies that has elements from all genres.A must see for any fan of British films or any fan of Taxi Driver.
Falling in Love (1984)
Simple yet Powerful
It was a real treat to watch Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep together in a light-hearted romantic flick.Everything about this me was perfect to me,from the pacing, the splendid score, the direction and of course the terrific acting. The concept dealt in this movie is very meaningful and many of us can totally relate ourselves with the characters in this movie. There is a hidden message which has been wonderfully conveyed too and that is - Love after marriage can be tempting for some at times but one should not use that as an opportunity to run away from a person who has been loyal and caring to them all throughout their marriage.Marriage is a commitment that you cant just walk away from for no rhyme or reason.
You don't get to see movies like this made these days and to me this is an under-appreciated gem which has been misunderstood and unfairly judged by many.If you are in the mood for a romantic flick, give it a shot....I can assure you that you wont be disappointed.
Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
Laurie Strode vs Michael Myers
This might not be the scariest of all Halloween movies but it sure is the most fun filled and action packed of the lot.Jamie Lee Curtis finally returns as Laurie Strode the sister of the unstoppable serial killer Michael Myers and she does some serious butt kicking. She is one badass woman Michael Myers shouldn't have messed with I'll tell you that. The cast is pretty decent too...Josh Hartnett would be my pick next to Jamie Lee Curtis.I got my money's worth although I expected something completely different,I rather enjoyed the pleasant little surprise this had to offer instead. Some cool kills, great laughs, real kickass action and suspense....Great entertainment overall.
My Rating-7.5/10
The Green Berets (1968)
Made me sleep with my eyes open
What a borefest!! I was pretty eager to watch this and I can say without a doubt this is the worst war movie I have seen so far.I mean come on nothing happens here...The green berets looked more like worn out construction workers, despite this being an Action/War movie, you get neither.I like old-school war movies but I have to say that everybody involved in this project seemed to be sleeping throughout the movie.I have a great deal of respect for John Wayne as he was a true movie icon of the last century but I am afraid he was nowhere near his usual self in this.Even if you try to watch this for nostalgic purposes, you will be let down big time. There were a few spots where the movie was unintentionally hilarious accompanied by atrocious acting from both the Vietnamese and the Americans.I felt like I wasted two hours and twenty odd minutes and as each minute passed,I became more alienated with the characters and the plot. What makes it even more ridiculous is that it pretends to be an innovative and epic war flick but falls way short of that.
Even if you are a hardcore fan of "The Duke",think twice before watching it and do so if you have enough time on your hands, otherwise there is a good chance that you would end up regretting it.
RoboCop 2 (1990)
Robocrap!
This movie was so awful that it almost caused permanent brain damage to me.The movie is really outdated and after the first 15 minutes or so you get the feeling when is the torture going to stop. After watching the 1st movie I thought it would be worth watching this too despite the poor reviews but it was a complete waste of time watching it.I feel sorry for Peter Weller who had to work in this God-awful movie wearing that Robocop costume throughout,no wonder why he decided to quit after this.Apart from his performance everyone of those main characters suck big time.Frank Miller must have been through hell to see his ideas literally being flushed into the toilet. The acting is awful(I guess it was meant to be like that but everybody was so high on nuke including the makers of this movie as they forgot to realise that they were making bullshit),the direction is pathetic!!! (The guy who directed it deserves a kick in his pants for ruining Miller's ideas and failing to do his own job of making a decent movie) and last but not least this movie is a disgrace to the first part....I won't even consider watching the 3rd part since it has no Peter Weller and from what I've heard its the worst. My advice to all adults and grown ups- Just stay away from this one....
W. (2008)
"Is Our Children Learning ? "
Well to begin with I got to say this movie is as accurate as it can be about the life of George W.Bush.A man without any real aim in his life and who cannot be understood easily.Brolin's done a remarkable job in portraying an insecure man who was misled by his peers due to his inability to take the right decisions in life and politics. There's a lot to learn from this, one of them is to know whether the path that you have chosen in life is the right one before its too late and the other is to learn from your mistakes and not say "If only I could live it over again".This movie sheds a lot of light on the carefree youth of Bush Jr and his personal life(his relationship with his "poppy",mother and wife).Oliver Stone is terrific as always and I found the performances of James Cromwell,Ellen Burstyn,Richard Dreyfuss and Elizabeth Banks accurate and convincing. In case you didn't enjoy it the first time around give it a try some time when you are relaxed so that you can appreciate the movie better.Overall a well-made movie that has got many memorable moments from the life of the former president and it deserves more credit than its been given.
Identity (2003)
A Perfect Thriller
I have watched this movie so many times over the years since it has been released and I felt compelled to write a review.I can assure all you fans of the thriller genre that you wont be disappointed with this one as it can be a highly engaging flick even when you might not be in the right kinda mood. The whole story is refreshing and something that is so unique that it can totally blow you away.John Cusack,Ray Liotta,Amanda Peet,John C. McGinley,Pruitt Taylor Vince and John Hawkes give terrific performances. This is the movie along with City Hall that made me a John Cusack fan and I can proudly say that I have been given the great pleasure to relish many more of his great work as of today. James Magnold is a special talent indeed and we all know that...I mean everything the guy has done so far has been a fine work of art (Cop Land,3:10 to Yuma,Walk the Line,Girl Interrupted). The plot has been inspired by the Agatha Christie novel "And Then There Were None" and it does great justice to the novel.
Overall this is one unique movie that is definitely worth a watch in anybody's book and to me it is one of the most intelligent thrillers in recent times.I give it two thumbs up.
