Hope you can recommend some movies to watch that may make me change my opinion and/or consider other actors.
Potentional actors missed for my lack of knowledge (because I havent seen them play varying roles): Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, Jim Carrey, Forest Whitaker, Steve Buscemi, John Malkovich, James Stewart, Marlon Brando,Richard Dreyfuss(Holland's Opus), Tommy Lee Jones, Tim Robbins
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
Slapstick and kiddish...a flick to lighten you up after a stressful week
After a long week at work, I needed something to wind down to. I sat on my couch with some friends as we reminisced some of our childhood movies(in parody). To be honest, the parodies were a small part of the movie, but their super-dumb ideas somehow 'working-out' in favor of our heroes, added to the hilarity.
Don't expect anything witty..this movie is pure slapstick. If you like movies like 'Dumb & Dumber' or 'Tommy Boy', you will enjoy this (all though Be Kind Rewind may not be as epic/timeless as those).
Also, a word of caution..I know that not everyone can take Jack Black's comedy. If you are one of them, proceed at your own risk ;)
John Q (2002)
Almost a great movie
10 stars for the actors Denzel and Kimberly Elise.
First of all, this is a movie with a real cause. (i.e. reminding us of the harsh truth of the American Health Care system). I'm not sure if it did/could have effect on actual policy, but I'm sure it touched many hearts everywhere.
This movie could have been 10/10 but for poor script-writing at very crucial points. The level of drama was simply fantastic when Denzel/his wife were on camera, but otherwise suffered (most of the time), especially with the police scenes.
In addition, I agree with some of the other reviewers that the ending was too 'hollywoody'. This movie could have really stood out with an ending that made the movie unforgettable. But it was too passive compared to strength of the rest of the drama.
What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004)
new-age pseudo-scientific garbage.
The fact that quantum theory is mysterious is bended out of proportion by many pseudo-scientists like deepak chopra (if you listen to the babble that comes from him, you'll know what I mean).
It is this kind of sensationalistic nonsense that might have catered to the taste of medieval people into believing religious magic. Now that common people have more access to scientific theories and discoveries, but not everyone has the inclination/time to understand these deep principals, pseudo-scientists use buzzwords like 'quantum' consciousness to attract people into utter bullshit.
Any respectable scientist would see this movie as a joke. a vote of 3 for its 'humor' value.
Seven Pounds (2008)
A philosophical view and a practical view
I am not a philosopher, but the first thing that came to my mind while watching this movie is how much glory could one man possibly want. it would seem like they tried to make people think a lot...to a certain point it did, but if you took a closer look from a philosophical perspective, the hero's character is actually a really poor one.the is the most selfish, self loathing, guilt driven character, not to mention sadomasochistic. "fake-selflessness", "pretentious" were accurate phrases used by other critics.
Someone as smart (MIT) or as rich as him, could do such noble things that could have a more profound effect on more people's lives...like aid some biological programs for tissue/organ regeneration or start at least one organization for the needy people around the world. OK, not everyone knows the best way to redemption, but the fact that you are hogging recognition for your deeds and enjoying in bed (with the weak hearted) right after your wife's death, is definitely not a good message. OK, he took out is bone marrow without anesthesia to purposely suffer, but how does that help anyone but make himself feel good.
philosophy aside, it was long drag (maybe for dramatic effect) for at least the first half and then there was some build up. a movie that spins on like this most likely just means it is trying to take time because of the lack of content, but make it look like it is trying to stamp an emotional effect which i thought was way overdone. Will Smith is my favorite actor, but script-wise i think this movie will be one of the few forgotten ones. After a certain point I saved my eyes and just listened to the conversation. This let me listen to the background music which was out of tune as well (i see that other people here have noticed that too.)
Finally... I would have liked this movie even if the hero helped those 7 peoples lives but as long as he didn't take any credit for it..i.e. by not getting noticed at all..ever heard of "anonymous donation" ?
The only positive message i see from this movie is for those who think the only solution to a hard life is to give up on it....at least by signing up as a donor, they could help someone who appreciates life.
