Dolan's Cadillac (2009)
Dolan really had a Cadillac !!!
I liked this movie. Though its not a brilliant movie that blows your mind away, this still is a good watch. Its not the usual revenge flick with lotsa action and nothing more. This movie had originality in showing the revenge seeked by a husband whose wife got murdered by criminals because she was a witness of murders in a desert. I liked the way our hero was not shown as a superman who just walks and throws people away as if they were pieces of rough paper. This man is a normal guy who is scared of criminals but still wants revenge. He gets defeated by the villain quite a few number of times, but still does not give up. Realizing he can't win over them by just using guns and trying to kill them, he hatches a plan to seek revenge. And boy, what a method it was !! This movie really has one of the best climax in recent times. And the last scene is one of the most original scene I have seen in a long long time. Of course you know what would happen in the end but still you would like to watch it. Definitely recommended !!!
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
I loved it! Super gross and it actually creeped me out a couple of times.
Sam Raimi comes back to what he does best, and he's picked up a lot of skills on the way. The precision of the camera work, editing and action scenes are pretty much perfection. The fight that takes place at the underground car park is formidable. When the old woman tries to bite her without her teeth in, and she is basically sucking her chin that is so funny. This film, like Evil Dead, is a comedy horror. Sam Raimi is trying to raise a laugh, for sure. So this film shouldn't be taken seriously; Sam Raimi's tongue is firmly in his cheek. That said, there is a fear factor to this film. There were many scares in the film, maybe even too many, but that's why I love Sam Raimi films, because he's not scared of showing you the monsters in full view. There's no blurred figures quickly crossing the camera here. There are clichés however, but they're funny, and they don't bog down the film. Also, there are certain things here that I've seen in Evil Dead, but they are obvious and not a complete copy, but more of a homage. This is a film with a relentless approaching doom that runs from start to finish. Like Evil Dead, this film just gets on with the scares; There's no boring long periods where the director tries to get you to like and sympathies with the main characters. Most horrors these days, will run for 30 minutes before a scary scene pops up. There's none of this here; It's a ride on the roller-coaster from hell from scene one to the final scene. All in all, it's not perfect. Maybe the end was a bit predictable, but I really enjoyed this movie. 90/100. My favorite horror this year, by one of my favorite directors of all time. A must see for horror fans!!
13B: Fear Has a New Address (2009)
one of the better horror / thriller churned out of Bollywood in recent times...
I found this better than 1920, Phoonk or Raaz 2..... Promos gave me an impression that 13 B could be on the lines of 'Poltergeist' or 'The Ring'.....but, the similarity ends with the TV premise. The story, though not original, is at least fresh. The acting was good, Madhwan was the best of the lot. Fear appeared natural on his face and that made it for me. Wont say anything about the story, because it might contain spoilers, but would recommend this movie to a fan of horror/thriller genre. Its definitely better than the recent crap offered from bollywood. But, I definitely agree with most of the reviewers here that the first half stretches a bit too long and the songs are totally unnecessary. But once the story starts to unfold, it is at a brisk pace and keeps you hooked. The ending was disappointing for me. I expected something new, but again it was the same story as it is in all the haunted house movies....a family murdered in the house looking for revenge.... If the ending would have been good I would have given a definite 9, but its 7 from me. Recommended but not a must watch..... :-)
Escape from Sobibor (1987)
captivating and heart wrenching!!!
i haven't seen a more captivating movie ever...easily the best movie i ever watched
each frame of this movie would remain with u for your entire life. i considered Casablanca as my favorite movie, but now escape from sobibor has taken its place.
it was touching, heart wrenching, exciting, thrilling at the same time. it made me cry, made me think, imagine, made me angry, frustrated and jump with joy (in some sequences) . the acing was top-notch, screenplay taut, the story mind blowing, more so because it was based on true story and the execution brilliant. there never was a dull moment in spite of being a lengthy movie. do yourself a favor, watch this movie (that is, if u have not watched it already!) irrespective of the genre of movies u like! u wont regret it, rather be too happy to watch this....very very highly recommended......
Rap nawng sayawng khwan (2005)
Fast-paced slasher flick.......
......and probably thats what saves this movie. i found this movie fast-paced and sleek in presentation. the script is almost non-existent and for quite some time one is left wondering why in hell's name the killings are taking place. But, The body count is high and the kill scenes pretty frequent, and were gory too, and thats why the audience don't get time to think about what is happening and why. You just go for a 'killer' ride! and if you are a fan of these type of movies, you enjoy it! the twist at the end was not shocking or unexpected by any standards, it was acceptable at best. A few Hollywood slasher movies in recent past have had the same 'reality show' premise. the acting was OK too...the movie is definitely watchable at least once and maybe twice too (if you have nothing to do on a lazy afternoon) Recommended to slasher/gore fans. My rating- 8/10.
Black & White (2008)
Black and White walks away with Flying Colours !!!!!
i am a hardcore horror/thriller/mystery fan, and watch very few movies belonging to other genres. I watched this movie only because it had a theme which was very fresh in the minds of all Indians..."The Terrorist Attack on the Delhi..." and i must say i enjoyed every bit of this movie. a thought provoking, heart wrenching movie... Anil Kapoor was at his best in this film. He portrayed the role of a moralistic Urdu professor with such élan and elegance that i was amazed. The scene that i felt best was the one when Anil comes to know his wife was dead and in spite of being totally shattered and shocked, he asks his daughter not to cry as that might lead to Hindu-Muslim riots
Watch it and enjoy it!!i am sure u will!!! I will highly recommend it to everyone who likes intelligent movies.. a 9.5/10 rounded off to 10/10 !!!!
Title's the spoilsport....
though the plot was not original, the screenplay definitely was creative and impressive. but the title gives away too much and therefore the movie which had immense potential fails to generate any suspense which should have been the aim for the makers. "Premonition".....instantly i knew what the movie was all about and every scene made sense to my belief. The concept of "1 day alive and the other day dead" was really interesting. and had it not been for the title, the movie would have succeeded in keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. but as it turned out, I was really disappointed. This does not mean the movie is bad, its not bad at all, nor by any standard of imagination, its rather good. but all i am trying to convey is that the title played the spoilsport. a good movie nonetheless.... watch it if u are a thriller/mystery fan. i'll give it 6.5/10.
fast, pacey and sleek........
....this defines the whole movie. i myself had my adrenaline pumping for the full 87 minutes... though there was not much in terms of story, but i am sure the director was not aiming for Oscar for best screenplay!! it was a fast, pay action movie with some real good action and thrills. Jason Statham did a nice job as Chev. Te bad guy Verona was cool too!! The only dumb thing in the movie was Chev's girlfriend. I really could not fathom that a guy like Chev actually loved her!!!
Anyways, i completely enjoyed my time and had a blast watching this movie. Even though i watched it alone on my laptop, I did not get bored at any time. Highly Recommended for action and Thriller fans !!!
definitely an 8.5/10
Cries in the Night (1980)
Total psycho rip-off
I did not like this movie one bit. but maybe i have a reason for that. I just watched psycho this noon (yes watched psycho for the first time !!) and just happened to purchase the DVD of funeral home from the store in the evening. I had never heard of this movie before and the covers of the DVD claimed it to be a "smash hit horror movie" (well the name suggested that too), so being a hardcore horror buff i picked this one up. to be honest, i was anticipating it to be a supernatural thriller with ghosts and demons and all...but i was in for a rude shock discovering it to be not what i expected. its not that i don't like slasher movies, i love them, but have seen too many of them of late that i actually got bored with the particular genre. also, i just watched psycho during the day. 12 mins.into the movie and i knew what was coming but still hoped that it wont be the granny, maybe there actually was someone in the cellar (but in my heart i knew that would not be the case..sad). as it turned out, it was the psycho granny...
many people would like this and may be i would have too, had it not been for psycho!!!
i'll give it 5 stars.
Woodstock Villa (2008)
not brilliant but not bad at all.....
Woodstock villa.....the title seems promising especially for a thriller. but the movie does not live up to the interest it created initially. i agree with a fellow commentator that if this was made a short film of around 10-15 minutes, the impact would be much better. the story is not worthy of a lengthy film but anyways i did not find it totally bad at all. one thing that works in the favor of this movie is sikander kher....the guy has a talent inherited from his parents (Anupam and kiron kher). i wont say the twists were unpredictable but nevertheless overall its a watchable movie... not highly recommended but worth a one time watch, if only for sikander..
