Perfect 70's/80's style horror film
Ignore the haters! I almost didn't, but am in Texas on business and decided to rent it from Red Box, and I'm so glad I did. This is very similar in feel and style to the 70's film "Ssssss"---which I always enjoyed and thought was underrated. Add in a little dose of Cronenberg's "The Fly", and a touch of "Dead of Winter"(the one with Mary Steenbergen). The acting by Depp, Parks, Long,Osment and all the cast was spot-on. Depp's performance was truly original and inspired. Smith's direction took the story to an almost unbearable level of horror-tolerance, without going over the edge like the "Saw" films or the disgusting "Human Centipede" films---so, if that's what you're looking for, torture-porn horror, then stay away, you WON'T like it. But if you're looking for a good, creepy, funny, somewhat disturbing horror film, then this will put a smile on your face. Really reminded me of the 70's horror films, in content and style. Lots of talking in spots, but all relevant to the plot---tightly and expertly directed by Smith. I was not expecting this when reading all the horrible, hateful reviews, and makes me wonder if those reviewing even actually watched the film, or are just trolling to stir-up anger in people. If you like horror, R-rated horror, with a dose of comedy, then this is your ticket. I absolutely loved it!
Piranha 3DD (2012)
Brilliant beyond belief!
I was a fan of the first one, but hesitant to watch this entry, as there are sooooooo many bad reviews out there. Well, I was more than pleasantly surprised. First, for those upset with the sex, um, the title pretty much clues you in. This is total camp, with lots of intentional humor, as well as lots of gore, sex, and pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. If you think you've seen everything, you haven't---I can't recall a movie where my jaw was open half the time, not believing what I was seeing---but it was all in fun. David Hasselhoff's performance was a spot-on parody of himself, and he did it with aplomb---laughed out loud several times during his scenes. And actually, I laughed out loud during this movie more than I did during the two "Hangover" movies (which I enjoyed)put together--- and the laughs were in the right spots, for all the right reasons. There were also some very well-executed tension and scare scenes that I was very impressed by. The effects to me were very, very good, considering this isn't the new "Spiderman" or "Avatar", but again, it isn't trying to be. The piranhas were creepy-fun, and the gore, well, they don't hold back. The filming even was very competent, with the night scenes looking eerie, the pool scenes chaotic, and the sex/boob scenes over-the-top. This is such a great companion piece to the first one--I ordered it "On Demand", but will definitely be buying the DVD---I was not disappointed. Oh, and not that it matters, but I'm not some horny teen getting off on this film, I'm a 50 year-old gay man---my partner and I have been together for 20 years, and have very different tastes in movies, but we both agreed at the end of this one that is was a FANTASTIC sequel!
