Arthur (1996–2022)

My son and I love this cartoon!

This is a wonderful cartoon. My son is 18 months old and he loves to watch it. This is a show that deals with stuff that kids go through every day. One episode that is one of my favorites deals with Arthur being teased because he is the only one in his class who hasn't lost a baby tooth.

I now see why children like Arthur and his friends so much. Kids of all ages can identify with him, not just eight year olds (Arthur and his friends are all in the third grade), but everybody can identify with the characters. Even adults can identify with the parents on the show.

Also, I like this show because each character is different (except for Timmy and Tommy Tibbles) both physically and personally. No two characters are the same, and the friends all accept each other's differences. I think that that is one thing that parents need to teach their kids: to accept the fact that no two people are exactly the same and that everybody is different. That is what makes everybody special.

I hope that parents watch this show with their kids. If you do, I think you'll approve of it for your children. I know I approve of this one!

Thomas and the Magic Railroad (2000)

Dreadful...Even My 18 month old hated it!

Thank god I didn't waste a lot of money on this for my son! I thought he would like it, so I rented it for him because he loves Thomas the Tank Engine. After about 5 minutes, he started complaining and wanted me to put on a normal Thomas DVD. I even thought it was awful, even though I watched it for about 30 minutes more. I would like to know how much they really had to pay Alec Baldwin to make this. Thank god they never made a sequel to this.

Thomas & Friends (1984–2021)

A Wonderful Series For Toddlers As Well As Grownups!

I never watched Thomas as a kid. I didn't know about Thomas the Tank Engine until several years ago. My son got into Thomas when he was about a year old. One of his playmates had a lot of Thomas trains and he played with them a lot whenever they saw each other. I thought that since my son liked playing with the trains, he might like watching the series. I bought him The Best of James on DVD and he loved it! He is now 18 months old, and he dances to the music in between each story. I like the series because it teaches kids about working together as a team, and lending a helping had when someone really needs it (like the time James' brakes were jammed and Percy had to come and rescue him, or when James realized he was going too fast because he had no driver and Edward had to come and rescue him)and the value of friendship and being honest.

E! Mysteries & Scandals (1998– )

The Grimmer Version of the True Hollywood Story on E!.

This show, like the E! True Hollywood Story (both shows appear on E!) is a biography, but what sets this show apart from the THS is that it is much shorter (usually is 30 minutes long) and focuses mainly on celebrities that were alive during Hollywood's golden era. Some are well-known (such as Marilyn Monroe, Howard Hughes, and I Love Lucy's Desi Arnaz) others were alive during the early part of the 20th century (Fatty Arbuckle, Mabel Normand and silent movie director William Desmond Taylor--all part of the silent movie era). Also, this show is much darker and focuses on what events lead to tragedy for whoever is the main focus of the show. A.J. Benza, the show's host, does a fantastic job. He gives a brief bio of the star that is being discussed, and introduces the segments that involve people that once knew or wrote about whoever is being talked about.

Another thing that sets this show apart from the THS is that there is never a happy ending (if it did ever have one, I don't think it would be called Mysteries and Scandals). It only has death, tragedy and misfortune.

What makes the show interesting is the fact that it doesn't deal with just movie stars. Gossip columnists (Hedda Hopper), movie directors (William Desmond Taylor), and millionaires (Howard Hughes) have also been discussed. I think that this is one of the more entertaining shows that E! has to offer because of the subject. Also, it has some intense renenactments of some key moments in the show. I think that if this show wasn't on, those of us who watch it wouldn't know about the silent movie stars, directors, etc. that existed during that time. I think that there was a show similar to this on the same network in the early 90s, but it was so badly acted that I can't seem to remember what it was called. This show, I think, is one of the best shows that E! has to offer.

Teletubbies (1997–2001)

Cute!

I used to think that this show was nothing but mindless entertainment for younger children. After my 14 month old started to watch it, I changed my mind and thought that it's not so bad after all--in fact, I actually enjoyed it. I think that for all you older people out there, you have to sit and watch this show with a toddler. Whenever my son is being cranky at the end of the day, I sit him down and play one of the tapes. He watches quietly while he gets ready for bed. Any show brings a smile to my son's face is fine by me (as long as it's not anything that he shouldn't be watching!).

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)

One of my favorites, now my son's favorite!

I always loved Winnie the Pooh. This is my favorite of all the Pooh movies. My favorite story is the first one, Winnie The Pooh and the Honey Tree, where Pooh eats too much honey and gets stuck in Rabbit's hole. It is such a heartwarming movie. I love most of the Disney movies that I saw, but this has to be one of my all time faves. My son, who is now 14 months old, is an absolute Winnie the Pooh nut. He goes nuts when the opening comes on (even though only Pooh's right arm and leg are seen). His favorite is also The Honey Tree story. Unfortunately, I dread the very last story, because he cries because the movie is over, and that means the end of the movie. He watches it so much, I have to have a second copy! If you have children, or even if you don't and you just plain love Disney (like me and my son), I highly recommend Pooh. It will really cheer you up when you are feeling bad, so I really recommend this movie (you won't be sorry you bought it!).
