Black Swan (2010)
Aronofsky has done it again
This extraordinary masterpiece had me captivated from the first minute right through to the end of the film. Now for all of you just expecting to see a light hearted ballerina flick then you are very wrong. I hav'nt seen Natalie Portman act as good as this ever, although she was brilliant in Leon and V For Vendetta. Mila Kunis has also shown first rate acting and Vincent Cassell was brilliant too as the strict ballerina teacher. Darren Aronofsky is becoming one of my favourite directors of all time, he hasn't made a bad film yet.
Maybe people might of heard that this film starts off really slow but trust me its not. The film is just setting itself up and introducing characters and mood. Expect to be shocked by startling scenes with extreme originality and surreal undertones. Certain parts of this film even gave me sweaty palms, its that intense. This film will leave traces of itself in my mind for many years to come and would consider it to be one of the greatest films of the past 10 years.
Natalie Portman deserves every award thats coming to her and the film should definitely have a run in for best film and best director. A MASTERPIECE 10/10.......J.D Seaton
Chi bi (2008)
John Woo's Masterpiece
this is by far John Woo's finest work. he has really made an awesome epic out of this. i really love the Dynasty Warriors games on the Xbox 360 so i really couldn't wait to watch this adaptation. it really is a fine addition to the great Japanese films that are being released.
the film is basically about character Liu Bei who has to defend and fight back a massive army orchestrated and ruled by the evil Cao Cao. the whole film is basically about a huge battle on who will be reined supreme of china in 200 AD. all the characters in this are really good and add something brilliant to it.
i do think this film should of been more mainstream. i think on its release i hardly heard or seen any advert's of it which was a huge disappointment. i really am excited on seeing the second part this. its a really rewarding film that should be watched by people who are into Japenese film plus War freaks. if you are into A House Of Flying Daggers, Hero, Fearless, Curse Of The Golden Flower and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon then you'll love this film............... 9.3...........j.d Seaton
Road Trip (2000)
Another addition to the "Teen movie" franchise
this film isn't bad. it just came out at the wrong time because the other teen films that were released at the time were a lot better such as American Pie, Faculty, Idle Hands, Scary Movie and the Scream films. there really was far too many teen flicks at the turn of the millennium. this film was far from the worst. just think how stupid that Dude Where's My Car film was. there's quite a large cast in this that includes Breckin Meyer (Go), Seann William Scott (American Pie), Amy Smart (Butterfly Effect), Paulo Costanzo (Joey), Ethan Suplee (American History x), Fred Ward (Short Cuts) and the ultra stupid Tom Green (Freddy Got Fingered).
the film sets around Breckin Meyer's character thats having a very long distance relationship. So he makes a video tape of him saying a lot of romantic gestures so he can post it to her. later on that night he sleeps with another girl that funnily enough gets recorded. that tape then accidentally gets sent to his girl friend so then he has to travel across America with some of his class mates to retrieve the tape before his girlfriend views it. it isn't a bad film but it really is set just for teens to watch it.
on a whole i'd avoid this movie if you've seen the other teen comedies of that time because you ain't missing much. but worth a watch if there isn't anything else on TV............ 4.5/10.............j.d Seaton
An OK film that tackles with a very original concept
this film is very disturbing and shouldn't be watched by anyone who doesn't want to watch a film full of extreme sexual scenes. plus what makes these characters so messed up is the infatuation they have for getting turned on by watching car crashes. James Spader, Holly Hunter, Rosanna Arquette and Elias Koteas give pretty good performances. the film is basically set on these odd people that make a club and in this club they watch very harsh car crashes on the TV while either having sex or masturbating to it. as i said the film is very disturbing and i think this is probably the most controversial film ever made. i do think director David Cronenberg always tries to have something extreme in his film. if its not sex its hard hitting violence or something really strange. this film is definitely aimed at the Cronenberg fans due to its strange going ons. i'm not really a fan of Cronenberg's work but if i had to choose a favourite i'd pick A History Of Violence.
this is a good film that is very original even over 10 years later this film has not been repeated so it should be watched by people who want to watch something different. even though the sex is really over the top it is a interesting look into the fetish's of something very strange. not brilliant but definitely worth a look.............. 6.5..............j.d Seaton
This is an edge of the seat dramatic roller-coaster. extremely powerful blow to the senses
everything in this film is remarkable. the acting is flawless. i haven't seen acting as good as this in a long time. this film is a true masterpiece that deserves the attention of true movie fans that wanna see something powerful and moving. Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis do extraordinary and career defining work in this. they all got Oscar nominations but didn't win unfortunately. its actually very hard to determine who my favourite actor was in the film. the directing and screenplay is simply amazing by John Patrick Shanley. i've not heard of him before but hoping he makes other flawless masterpieces like this. i think he should of won some Oscars for this film. i really don't know how Slumdog Millionaire got the better of this, The wrestler and The curious Case Of Benjamin Buttons. don't get me wrong because Slumdog is brilliant but them other films surpass it i think.
its a truly powerful and stunning story. the story tackles with a very controversial concept, child abuse. Meryl Streep plays a principal at a church school and has a dislike for Father Flynn played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Amy Adams plays a teacher that has an inkling that Father Flynn has been interested in one of the boys at the school. the film is very shocking and really has your eyes wide open and gasping. the whole movie really works perfectly. the exact right cast were chosen for this. the pacing of this is perfect and the gritty look of it really pulls you in. the acting without a doubt with have you glued to this classic. one of the best films in a long while. A MASTERPIECE............. 10/10............j.d Seaton
The Grudge 3 (2009)
A good third instalment to the series but really needs to be stopped before it gets too silly
this new Grudge instalment is my worst of the three but still holds on and is enjoyable but i really do hope that this is the last one. if they make another i really do think i'll hate it. you can always see when a film series should finish by seeing how many well known actors are not in the new ones and there not replaced by other big actors. now i know i will be ridiculed for this but my favourite grudge film is the second one. i actually think the second has an epic horror movie feel due to its three long stories that are happening in three different times and different places.
the Grudge 3 basically starts in a mental institute because Jake (survivor of the second film) has been committed there. he is extremely scared because he knows that hes going to be the next victim by Kayako and Toshio. the film is set in the same hotel as the second instalment and the evil is still there. the film gives off some pretty good shocks and is still pretty fresh and interesting but you can see by watching this that this has to be the last one in order to keep the films dignity. this is a good instalment but doesn't come close to the first two movies............. 7/10..............j.d Seaton
Extremely rubbish show !!!!
i really don't know how anyone could like this abomination. think of the programme Heroes, then think of the worst film or programme you've ever seen. there in lies Misfits. the acting is atrocious, the plot is stupid, the graphics would be frowned upon in the 1970's. i must of rolled my eyes in embarrassment about thirty times through out the first episode. it really is an English forgery of Heroes and fails miserably. there is some stupid scenes that are took way over the top such as a scene where this girl is sucking off a bottle in front of some guys and it went on for over a minute. the camera work on that scene makes it look worse too. it was really unfunny and i don't understand how some people are giving this third rate show good reviews.
i don't even think this programme will reach the American audiences which is a good thing for those guys. i'll have to make sure i'm not watching TV on a Thursday night............... 1/10.............j.d Seaton
In Bruges (2008)
What's all the fuss about
now i'm really into classy cinema and i usual like what all the critics like but i really don't understand why this has been hyped up so much..... its a fairly straight forward plot about two guys that are hit-man and are basically chilling out in Belgium. i guess the film talks on some levels about friendship and atonement but it doesn't save the boring plot. Colin Farrel does an OK job i guess and Ralph Fiennes is my favourite in this even though he's hardly in it. i wouldn't class this film as a comedy even though there are some subtle comedy underlinings. i'd be more accurate by saying this film is a moody and dramatic piece. i really couldn't find anything special about this. i didn't hate it. it had its moments of originality and i guess some people will love this but the film really didn't grab me.
i am extremely astonished that this is in the top 250. its makes me think there must be something subliminal going on in this film that i didn't catch on too. overall this film was a let down and really left me feeling like i wasted my money from purchasing it........... 4.5/10...........j.d Seaton
He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
A romantic comedy that really work.......... Finally.
there's a lot of things that are fantastic in this gem. the acting is brilliant, the story is awesome and this movie really spoke to me on many levels and i think it will to a lot of other people. the film handles in a lot of relationship problems that we have all had to endure sometime in our lives. there's a lot of characters in this and all of them have either a problem in there relationship or they are cheating on there other half or they just cant find the right person and in order to find the right person an action plan has to be filled out. all the stars we're excellent in this....... Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, Drew Barrymore and Bradley Cooper really do awesome jobs as people in relationship dilemma's. now i really ain't into romance film but this film was really fantastic. so what i'm trying to say is if your are not into romantic films you really should give this a try because it has a lot going for it.
i really cant pick my favourite characters because they are all brilliant. some of the situations these characters get into are really funny and original. the film holds a fair amount of twist's too which i find a little strange due to it being a romantic film but it makes the film a lot more interesting. overall this film should be watched by all because i wouldn't consider this to be a chick flick because it hits a lot of guy situations. this really is a brilliant film................. 9.7/10...........j.d Seaton
The Stand (1994)
Brilliant in parts and terrible in others
now the first thing i'd like to say is the acting is really bad but what i found out was once you've watched the first hour of it you become desensitised by it and you can enjoy the progress of the film. there really was some terrible scenes in this that really should be edited out. the whole film last's for about six hours but i think if someone edited a lot of the bad acting and stupid scenes out then they could release a 3 hour feature of it on DVD which i think could be a good purchase. i'd definitely buy a copy.
the story is basically about a plague that wipes out the human race apart from about a 1000 people who are immune from it. the survivors are then forced to join one of two teams. good or evil. sounds a little silly but it works. the film is very supernatural, basically the good want to en-power the earth and make everything better but evil wants to turn earth into hell. now if you do manage to watch the whole 6 hours then i think you'll enjoy it even though it has major flaws. i did like Rob Lowe in the film, he's the only actor who i thought really shined in it. Miguel Ferrer did a pretty good job too i guess.
for anyone who wants to watch this then you really need to be in the right mood because of the length and the cheapness of it really can annoy you. i managed to watch all of it and i gotta say i did enjoy it. its no way near Stephan Kings best adaptations but still enjoyable. i do think they should shorten it or better yet remake it because the story is really good and in the right hands it could be a blockbuster if remade................ 6.5/10............j.d Seaton
