Come and Get Me (2011)
A Fantastic achievement!
How do you describe the multi-award winning Queensland/Sunshine Coast filmmaker Chris Sun's 1st feature film production "Come And Get Me"?
One word. Gruesome!
Hailing back to the exploitation "video nasty" style of extreme horror/gore films made famous in the 80's like "I Spit On Your Grave" and "The Last House On The Left", Chris Sun's latest creation "Come And Get Me" is a no holes bared "Old School Slasher" about 4 sexy party girls who after a night of nightclubbing find themselves stranded in Brisbane and are forced to contact an old high school friend and his mates to pick them up to drive them safely back to their homes on the Sunshine Coast.
But as you may have guessed the chances of any off them making it home in one piece is very slim, especially since writer/producer/director Chris Sun also specializes in the art of "blood & guts movie special effects. And with his production company called "Slaughter FX" you kind of get the picture that things will go from bad to terrifying worse in no time at all. And they certainly do.
The film starts with a pretty sickening pack hunt of a young woman in the outback forest which is where we meet the psychotic hyena laughing "Johnny" (played by scarily well by Christian Radford) and his two tag along mates who seem to make a sport of killing off young woman (and a couple of men) for no reason at all but a bit of fun and to quench their pretty much boring lives.
In no time the group of sexy party girls (lead by the fantastically gutsy and natural actress Sarah Jane Blair) are the latest fresh meat for the crazy bogan killers and the fun begins. (If you like that kind of thing!)
I have to say this style of film is not my favorite kind as I prefer thrills rather than creative kills in a horror movie, but Chris Sun delivers such a creative gorefest of tongue in cheek black comedy (and I do mean jet black) that each victim is dispatched in the most bloodcurdling of ways. My favorite being with a weapon called "Pinhead" (which is obviously a fun nod to a past movie monster).
"Come And Get Me" is the kind of movie that is so full on that you can't help but laugh out loud at the atrocities inflicted on its hapless victims. And it is quite obvious as you watch further that Chris Sun himself is a die-hard fan of this genre of filmmaking which actually makes him the perfect person to give fellow fans of this Fangoria style mayhem a new serve of outrageous fun.
Filled with slasher film homages, hidden "in jokes" and classic "sick Aussie humor" Chris Sun has delivered old school carnage to a new generation on splatter film fans.
Shot for a micro budget the thing that makes Chris Sun different to most new filmmakers is that usually in this style of film the FX let down the film but having the experience he has this is not a problem, in fact I think it makes an audience more surprised/grossed out since the gory kills look so real. Self confessed and unashamedly proud to be known as a "Slasher Filmmaker" I see Chris Sun having the ability to become the Horror Gore Master of the Australian Film Industry.
But the most admirable thing about what Chris Sun has done is not only to actually complete a feature length film (which few actually do!) but he has also managed to fill cinemas all over Australia, be nominated and claim awards in a number of film festivals and most impressive of all is his ability to self distribute his film on DVD and instant download systems worldwide. I'm sure official distribution companies will be knocking on Chris Sun's door in no time but until then Chris looks to continue simply "Just doing it! And doing it as bloody as possible.
So I say "well done" Chris Sun and keep up the great work in your endeavor to continue to do bigger and better films as you become an even better filmmaker in time.
