I remember watching Blacula as a kid in the 80's. It was before we had cable and you had to watch it on the UHF Channels. All the other kids were watching cartoons, I was watching this stuff!
Blacula doesn't take itself too seriously but it also wasn't made to be a spoof.
Some of the acting isn't the greatest but William Marshall as Mamawalde / Blacula and Thalmus Rasulala as Dr. Gordon Thomas play off of each other well.
They are the Blaxploitation version of Dracula vs. Van Helsing and they are good at it.
The plot is simple and straight forward. A vampire from 200 years ago in modern day LA. That is 1972 modern day LA.
There are a couple of sexual orientation slurs in the dialog, but I am sure back then it was acommon thing and wouldn't get you canceled.
By the way, what is with all of the beat patrol officers in this movie wearing motorcycle helmets while driving cop cars? Was that a thing in the 70's?
If you want some Saturday evening or morning thoughtless fun, check out Blacula!
Now I am off to watch the sequel, "Scream Blacula, Scream".
