Speed Racer (2008)
Fun, Different, and Cool
I am a Wachowski brothers fan, I love The Matrix, and I even think the sequels are pretty good and though yes they are not as good as the first but there better then most say. I think here they made a fun movie. Yes its a movie that seems only geared toward kids, and not really accessible to most parents but I still liked it. I think the cast is great, everyone here feels like a cartoon character in a good way. The visuals are breathtaking, maybe head-ache inducing for some, but I loved the visuals. Now the big flaw of the movie, its story telling. There are points where the movie drags. It runs over 2 hours, which I think will annoy some kids. There is about 15 minutes worth of fat they could have cut. There were literally sequences where I say to myself "why didn't they cut that, did they need that". There is a sequence of Spirtle causing trouble during Royalton and Speed's meeting and it was just really annoying and it took me out of the scene. There is this sequence where they racing in the desert and it kept cutting to other racers being bribed, why did they need that? I mean all the other racers were already established as being dirty so why did they need that? I think there were too many flashbacks of Speed and Trixi as kids, I think one scene was enough of them as kids together. There is also just a simple scene where Speed is about to kiss Trixi and Spirtle interrupts it. So there is a lot of parts of the movie that dragged and could have been cut. I also wouldn't have mined more scenes with Speed and Trixi (present time), I didn't think there was enough. So while I know I went on a rant, but I actually did like the movie. I wish more people would have liked it, and I wish it did better in theaters. Its not a situation where I am going to bash people by saying they don't get it, I can understand why people hate the movie. I think the movie will pick up a big following on DVD, and will probably be a cult classic. I hope that happens and then we can get a GREAT DVD because the one Warners released sucked. I love The Matrix DVD's features, but there is nothing here and I know they documented a lot. So its a fun movie, and I recommend giving it a chance. Also it helps if you have a giant flat screen and you watch it on Blu-Ray.
A Strong WWII Film
If you are an Ed Zwick fan like me then you will like this. I don't think this film is perfect like I wanted it to be but there is some really good stuff here that makes it a definite recommendation. Since it is an Ed Zwick movie it is very well shot. The acting is mostly strong. I am a Daniel Craig fan and I think he is good but could have been given more to do. Like there is a scene where he kills some Nazis who gave aways his parents, and later he says how he regretted it and is unsatisfied. That was never really followed up to, like there is a seen where the survivors beat a nazi to death while claiming revenge and his character did nothing to stop it yet knowing that they wont be satisfied or feel like they have had justice, so him letting them do that didn't feel quite right with his character. He is good though but I wish they could have followed up on that. Liev Schreiber to me stole the show, he was well developed and his motives were always clear. Jaimie Bell was good but I thought he was under developed because you never really get an insight on if they should take action or retreat like Craig's character thinks. Also Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber's characters families were killed and it seemed like they forgot about it 5 minutes later and just fell in love with other woman right after. It kind of hurt there characters to me. So I think the movie is a little messy and did not follow up on ideas it started. I don't know if it was the editing or the script but I felt like there were a bunch of scenes missing. Its a good solid movie though and I think it is an important story that should be heard about and talked about.
Mutant Chronicles (2008)
Unfortunately style over substance
I saw this at Comic Con, and I just felt like sharing my thoughts. The movie could have been better. The movie had some cool stuff. I really dug the look of the flick, it had some originality, the special effects need a bit of work because they do at times become distracting. Also I did not like the voice over at all, I felt it dumbed down the movie even more which voice over generally does. Also the ending hurt the movie quite a bit. Also Tom Jane kicked ass in it of course like he usually does, he really does not get enough good parts. I think the director said that he had problems with the voice ever and effects, so hopefully that could be changed. I really think if they took out the voice over, put some more cash in it, and take out that kind of dumb ending this really could be come a really fun B movie. Hopefully they let the director fix these problems for theatrical release or even DVD, I think the movie will pick up a cult following someday but only if they fix these problems.
This is a very cool fast paced action movie. Its got a great star who is relatable to, before he becomes a super killer! It has great side characters Sloan and Fox, who are awesomely played by Freeman and Jolie. It has very cool action scenes, and uses slo-motion at the right moments. If you have read the book like me you will not find this predictable because it has some great twist that weren't from the book. My only problems with the movie are 2 things. One, I was left wanting more at the end I felt they should have had a battle between Sloan and Wesley. Also at 2 parts of the movies I felt the movie was choppy (cutting a scene to early) like when Wesley wakes up in his bed believing meeting the Faternity was a dream, how did he get back home?!?!?!?!? Also after that train scene and Wesley falls to the ground, how did Tarrence Stamp get him and bring him to his dad's apartment. So there are some minor problems in the movie, but it is really just a very fun cool movie.
