Love & Mercy (2014)
Worthy of Awards
Love & Mercy has outstanding action, direction, musical score, you name it. Elizabeth Banks conveys a wide range of emotions without saying a word. She has that rare quality to make the viewer actually feel what her character is feeling. While I am not a big John Cusak fan, this is one of his greatest performances as an actor. And Paul Dano is an young actor who again is absolutely excellent. Unfortunately this movie, like Pet Sounds album by the Beach Boys, will not receive the box office success it should. But it is a deeply moving movie with insights into one of the greatest song writers in music and should be nominated for several Academy Awards. Normally I do not gush so favorably in reviews but this is a movie that should not be missed. My only slight criticism is that longer versions of the early Beach Boys music should have been included.
I crudeli (1967)
This movie is a total waste of time. The acting isn't worthy of a high school play. Joseph Cotton should be ashamed and the ones who play his sons are wooden, incapable of emotion. The only decent acting is the second "widow." I am very surprised of the IMDb rating this was given. The photography is not first rate but acceptable. The score is sometimes actually appropriate for the scene. The plot has numerous holes, especially at the end. Its difficult to capture the spirit of the American West and the Civil War without filming in the United States. The "western" background is again, acceptable, at times. And the scene in the town near the end is completely predictable.
The Killing (2011)
reeks of tobacco money
Ridiculous amount of smoking leads one to believe the cigarette lobby is funding this show. Outside of that, the show is well done, the lead detective is excellent and is the type of detective any one would want working their case. Her partner is not likable and most probable there to contrast with her good police abilities. Sometimes the weather shifting between rain and sun can be annoying. Rosie's mom has the same face in every scene, the dad's grieving is more credible. Its a good show overall. The writers don't make clear the background of midge's sister, at least not yet. I am using netflix discs so only still in season one, Slowly developing plot at times and sometimes predictable.
Breaking Bad: To'hajiilee (2013)
intense and better and better
Every time I think I just saw the best TV episode ever, Breaking Bad reaches new heights of suspense, action, character development and constant unpredictability. The camera angles, music and acting are beyond outstanding. Little touches like the song playing in the background when Todd and Lydia talk add to the entertainment value. I started on Season 1 on Netflix until I got caught up real time. There are a few shows I put in their own special Oscar category and Breaking Bad is at the top of the list. If you have never seen it, start with Season 1, Episode 1 and after a few episodes you will be completely hooked. It's going to be truly a loss to TV when the show is over. Kudos to all involved in this fantastic experience!
Breaking Bad (2008)
best drama on TV, possibly ever
Photography, acting, storyline. Relationships intermingle with action. Unpredictable plot turns. Great character development. I cant think of any TV drama that comes close. (Seinfeld is a 10 but thats a different genre). The dynamic between Walt and Jesse, Walt and Skyler and Walt and Hank each have their own development ups and downs. The beginning of each show is an attention grabber, the viewer gets immediately hooked. I especially love the colorful supporting characters: lawyer Saul who acts unethical and illegal but strangely is loyal to his clients and can be trusted with millions of dollars. Mike is from the old Mafia school and of course Hank's wife is hilarious. Having a handicapped child, cancer and a cheating wife gives drug dealer Walt some sympathy. Will his empire grow? Or will it collapse? Great show!
Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
best remake of a great show!
Finally, a remake viewers of the old show can enjoy and appreciate....awesome cast, action, photography, plot. It could use a little cool music in background, like Miami Vice used to do. Maybe some U2 or even Kenny Chesney or Toby Keith would add some emotional impact. The acting is first class and I like the way the Five 0 came together. Of course as a LOST fan, I love Daniel Dae Kim. I hope this show makes it, there are many cop shows on TV but the chemistry here is first class. Love it! One of the best lines in cop show was when the Bad Guy said "what kind of cops are you?" and the answer was "The new kind." Lots of action but still time for character development. The old Hawaii Five 0 reminds of ethical cops trying to do a job. This show definitely continues the tradition of the cop trying to do his or her job. A Governor who creates a super select police force like that would get my vote.
Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D (2010)
definitely worth the $20 ticket price
The movie captures the bond Kenny Chesney has with his fans as well as the mutual respect. From the moment he sings while suspended over the crowd to the final, emotional rendition of Better As A Memory, the movie is a Kenny Chesney concert: energy, great music, talented musicians. Most of his biggest hits are there in entirety, no shortened sound bites. The effort he puts into a concert and the true love he has for his fans comes across well. During the final song it is obvious Kenny knows his concert days are over, for awhile at least. The fans realize his emotions are overcoming him and he is unable to sing Better As a Memory and they respond by singing it for him and with him. While some performers are divas and arrogant, Kenny Chesney is neither and this movie is a fitting tribute from him to his fans.
LOST is is awesome! (SPOILERS)
There have been so many whiners and complainers about LOST....it is GREAT show and this episode emphasizes it. People don't watch LOST to see characters sit around on the beach and develop "relationships" as some critics want to see the show illustrate. Rather, the plot is dynamic, exciting, full of surprises and shocks. The acting is terrific and of course the women are strong-minded, gorgeous and scheming as much as the men. Expose was a thriller, and yes, relationships can develop, change, mature and explode, just as in real life. But LOST does all that in the context of a thriller, mystery and surrealistic plot. When Nikki's eyes opened as she was buried alive, it sent chills down my spine. Thats exactly why I watch LOST, I want to be surprised and shocked and left waiting for the next episode. So producers: we don't need another 'relationship' movie. Keep doing what you are doing, its AWESOME!!!!
best redford and newman movie
Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid is outstanding. I loved it when I was in school when it first came out and years later its still funny, sad, and the movie that inspired the buddy films, none of which are as good. Redford is capable of comedic roles, if you see Barefoot in the Park, you know what I mean. Yes, they were great together again in the Sting but that movie didn't have the chemistry that Butch and Sundance have, and Katherine Ross looks every bit as gorgeous as she did in The Graduate. Terrific cinematography, and comic but insightful dialogue. And who can forget the scene when the horses come flying out of the train. Perhaps we have all felt at some time in our lives the way Katherine Ross did when she wanted to go to Bolivia: "I'm 28, single and a teacher".....
he never speaks....
Gruesome. Scary. Loud noises and faces appear when not expected. At times predictable but still scary. Other times, not predictable. Acting good for a horror flick, especially the sheriff. Chainsaw man never says a word in the movie. Starts out with promising soundtrack but once the horror starts, forget the music. And thats a good thing. Like the Saw movies, blood flows, its hardcore. I go for the cheap thrills, the girl in distress in the scary house with the monster family. This movie delivers, in my opinion. And the fact there are creepy people out there in real life makes it all the more scarier. Good movie, good thrills. Definitely recommend it.
