A Clockwork Orange. Perhaps one of the most devastatingly controversial movies ever!

It's a symphony of cult expression, a study of the greatest villain portrayed in film.

It's in-and-out with ultra violence, rape and pillage, but never has anything been so graceful or beautiful on screen!

Mesmorising and chilling to the very core, crossing with a ecstatic character study which since 1971 has never been touched!

Kubrick is a visionary, an artist with so many messages, a farce to bring down politicians and vigilantes while exposing that 'violence is a very nasty thing!'

Fight Club. This film couldn't hit you harder than if David Fintcher was actually there endlessly cracking you one in the rib cage and that's exactly what he does here.

A movie that makes you question everything in this modern burden of a society we live in today.

Brutal, gritty but most of all it will flaw your with it's dialogue, thrust you with its performances and finish you off with a blow to the head with its no limits finale.

Ten years later, no other movie deserves to speak its name or be in its presence, its a masterpiece thats impossible to be stepped up to!

Pulp Fiction. It's the answer you give when a child comes running up to you and asks 'what is cinema?'.

It's the definition you give to someone when they question cool, style and most of all pure entertainment.

From it's pulp visuals to flawless direction, superb screenplay to mesmerising characters, its better than the best sex you will ever have.

Endlessly quotable and watchable, captivating making every turn more exciting than the last.

More than a experience, but a passage into life, because if you ain't a 'Bad Mother F****R', then you ain't sh*t!

Gory, but a sequel best left berried., 29 May 2010

The sense of horror and claustrophobia has been pretty much whipped from this straight-to-DVD worthy squeal. It's not that the movie is particularity that bad, it's just The Descent Part II treds no new ground, diluting the qualities of the original in excuse for an easy cash in. The characters here are worthless, the human drama works at times but nothing to match the empathy given in the first movie. The dialogue and direction is very standard and the CG on the monsters is horrible. The total mind f*ck ending erases the little qualities that the movie was carrying and its just 90 minutes of something we've seen been done before and so much better.

Some gore is used for effect, but never scares because you can almost map out all the jumps and roars and is just essentially quite dull. It's not the worst horror squeal of all time, but a film that has no reason and no right to be made.

Overall: Some good gore, but fans of the original will be disappointed in this bland mix of meh and bad bad CGI. Works at times, but you can map out every jump scare and roar!A film best left berried.

A Ridiculous but gripping thriller!, 29 May 2010

Law Abiding Citizen is an engaging off-the-wall thriller, providing great performances and some stone cold violence. Everything is tense even in a plot so ridiculous and although the realism is never quite there, the movie is clever enough to make you feel for the characters and keep you hooked til the ending credits. Gerard Butler has been spewing some off-beat rom coms, but carries this revenge movie making you feel every emotion that he goes through. Portraying the evil and the victim in such an ingenious way that the difference between what's good and what's bad becomes one of the films strongest points. Jamie Fox, although got quite a bad write up does just fine in the support. No extra emotional baggage, but his chemistry along with Gerard Butler really works.

The violence is blood thirsty, the action is tense, although the movie isn't fully justified in its last sections, it delivers making up for the odd slow points in the movie.

Overall: Yes it's far fetched, yes its ridiculous, but this is a gripping and very entertaining thriller supporting some strong leads and providing some god-damn decent carnage.

The Men Who Stare at Goats is a jumbled result of random events and mixed genres. Where movies like Burn After Reading can balance a serious tone with a cartoony centre, The Men Who Stare at Goats is really unsure what sort of genre it's really going for. From shoot outs to slapstick, kidnapping to carpet jumping, the movie never feels like its hitting the right spot, always going down with a soggy after taste. Same goes for the tread of plot that lingers through out its running time. Did I say plot? More like a random chain of events where one thing happens to set up someone falling over, so some other ridiculous events can take place. It's not that its uneventful, there is just no plot aim or goal. Even in the story there supposed to be just aimlessly walking about, which builds very little tension or adventure with the characters.

Having said that, this isn't all bad by any means. Great actors giving great performances, sure Kevin Spacy is a little under done and Ewan McGregor Scotsman pierces, but their having fun which makes the movie a lot more enjoyable. The main themes in this movie are really interesting and if had been developed better this could have been made into quite the cult. Instead TMWSAG is just another so-so Hollywood fair, and if the climax hadn't been left with that shoot-my-self ending, then this could easily been a comedy Cohen brothers amateur, instead, it's renown for less.

Overall: Interesting premiss set sail behind some great performances cant upstage the paper thin plot and the uneven genre spanning. Entertaining in parts, but slow in others, just another so-so Hollywood fair.

Some stunning cinematography can't mask this disorganised and disorientated thriller!, 2 May 2010

'The Box' is in adaptation of the 10 minute short film 'Button, Button' a story of a man who get's offered a choice. Push the red button and you will receive $1,000,000, but if you do push it someone, anywhere in the world, will die. And there we have the first flaw with the movie. This is a 10 minute movie cut up, run over and spewed out over the length of two hours. The chilling backbone behind the original feature film is lost here, Richard Kelly took a simple story and the butchered outcome resorted in this over complicated lark. The middle sequences in this movie are filtered with a plot so far from the original story that if you do compare this expensive Hollywood movie with the low budget college project, then the amateur film does win. There is little atmosphere in this movie which is a key part to watch thrillers of this kind rely on. The acting and script is so-so. Cameron Diaz's accent flickers, Frank Langello gives a clichéd chiller and James Marsden just wanted to do something new.

Some of the cinematography here is brilliant, to bad most of the movies direction is fairly standard. If Kelly could have developed his artistic visions better, then this could have been eye candy without the soul. The beginning is promising and the execution is intriguing if not some what predictable. It's just that the middle, the core of this movie is just boring, uneventful, not particularity authentic and seriously ridiculous.

Overall: Richard Kelly has proved that Donnie Darko is still a one hit wonder, although a visionary in his own write, the plot outcome to this movie is just dribble, insulting and cutting all the tension that the original had held. Promising entrance and a satisfactory ending, just please sort out the middle section and then we'll give you the heads up hey Kelly?

Frightening film making fact or fiction!, 2 April 2010

The Fourth Kind has sort of been cast in the shadows and tucked away from the mass success that was Paranormal Activity. And for no good reason, this in many ways is a scarier and more intense film, despite Paranormal provoking qualities. Before sitting through The Fourth Kind, if you allow your mind to believe these up-coming events, then you are in for a cinematic experience you may never forget. If the entire concept seems way to far fetched and staged for you, then this is a rental at best. The way the movie is portrayed and put together for me is such an achievement because I was truly taken in by everything on screen. The audio's and 'actual footage' really plays on your mind, and despite the slow beginning, when it gets interesting you are hooked.

There aren't any stand out performances seeming so the acting isn't the strongest point here. Milla Jovovich isn't awful, but a different actress could have delivered a hell of a lot more tension in scenes that are a little dry. It does take a while to catch your interest, but it pays of in it's gripping middle and end sections. The direction is great and the editing techniques, although slightly tedious are very very good. If the movie is complete bull s*it and nothing here is real, then it's a complete middle finger to the fans, or you can take it as a frightening experience no matter fiction or non fiction.

Overall: If your convinced by The Fourth Kind, then this is a captivating and deeply scary movie that is likely to stay or your head for days. If it fails to succeed, then it's simply average but should still be recognised as a great piece of film making, despise it's so-so script and some effortless performances

Gritty and gripping piece of British weighed down by some lengthy scenes!, 2 April 2010

Harry Brown is the British Gran Torino. The classic actor near to retirement revives the audience with some stone cold vengeance, and Michael Caine is no exception. Harry Brown is a harsh, gripping and quite relevant movie for British society. Although the plot does talk to a minority of London teen's, every part of you wants to get some killing done because we really do really empathies with Michael Caine's character, putting on a brilliant performances. Harry Brown never sugar coats anything, its raw atmosphere pumps up the grit and although the ultra-violence may scare the weak away, it's still a good piece of film making. The direction is pretty solid and a good script follows, and as the movie progresses you really feel involved with everything that is going on, and leads to a very thrilling climax.

Having said all that, overall the movie is quite uneventful. 99 minutes and it seems like they were struggling to fill screen time. There are some insignificant scenes here that last way to long and spoils effect because the pace grinds to a halt. Emily Mortimer's performances was so- so, but a more capable co-starring would have given this movie some real justice.

Overall: A harsh, gripping movie that gives to audience the Michael Caine they deserve. Gritty and in-your-face violent, but is weighed down by lengthy scenes and a mediocre performance by Emily Mortimer. Not for the faint hearted, but should still be seen as a bold piece of film making. Poignant and intense stuff!

Far From Fantastic, but a bit of a hoot!, 10 March 2010

Fantastic Mr. Fox had it's British elements torn from the roots, butchered, Americanised, and in result of this we get to see the laziest stop motion displayed in cinema history. If you watch Nick Park's work on Wallace & Gromit, there is so much charm because of the attention to detail. This really does look rushed, and when ever there is a adventure or action sequences the camera cuts miles back so you can only just make out the card board cut outs. Wes Anderson could argue it's for effect, but perhaps all the budget went into it's divine A-list voice cast that there was just no money or time put in it's appearance. It doesn't look cute, in fact at times it's almost disturbing. The voice cast are fine here, the only problem is that there is just no need for these big names. Someone 10 times cheaper than George Clooney could have pulled off Fox's vocal chords with out breaking a sweat. It's just one massive marketing technique. The only voice actor here that was so vital to the film is Jason Schwartzman, his delivery is where the movie get's its greatest comedic injection.

Having said all this, this isn't particularly a bad movie at all. It's really well write and the dialogue is charming a very witty. Never laugh out loud hilarious, but it keeps the viewer much more interested, seeming so there's not much else to fall back on. The plot, although taken from the novel, still isn't great, but things do pick up in the last couple of acts and as annoying and frightening it may look, it is still entertaining. It's adult for kids, to kiddie for adults, Mr. Fox really can't settle a target audience and really can't hold a worthy contender for the Best Animation Film.

Overall: Far from fantastic, but it's quirky, cooky and a bit of a hoot. But in the end of the day it's just another ash for the animation pile.
