Justice League (2017)
I honestly think Zack Snyder should not be allowed to make another DC film. Man of Steel was awful and the same goes for Batman vs Superman.
I decided to give this a shot after finding it had been edited by Joss Whedon so went to the cinema to see it today.
All I can say is, two different people got up and left half way through. The first time I have ever seen this happen.
The film was just so run of the mill and soulless. There is no other way to describe it. The film had no spark to it.
The soundtrack for the film had short pieces of Tim Burtons batman movie and Richard Donners Superman. And all this made me do was realise this film is nowhere near as good as either.
I honestly feel the fault of this lies squarely with Zack Snyder. He does not know how to make an interesting superhero movie. Give Joss Whedon the directors job for the sequel.
The Orville: Krill (2017)
My favourite episode of the series
First of all, the Orville is brilliant. And what Star Trek Discovery should have been. I was eagerly waiting for Star Trek Discovery for years on it being announced. I was then so let down when I actually seen it. It was atrocious. Someone recommended to me to see The Orville instead and I expected it to be some camp poor imitation rip off. Like the Scary Movies series did with Scream.
It is not. It is brilliant. It has the Star Trek 'feel' to it. The characters are all likable and intermix well. And the jokes feel right and are actually funny. This episode, Krill. Hit it right out of the park. It was perfect. The jokes in this had me literally in stitches laughing (no lie). But it also was very well done story wise too. I am so eagerly waiting for episode 7 now. But I suspect it will not top episode 6 and this will be the best of the series. Seth Mcfarlane you are literally my hero for creating this series as it really is the Star Trek of how it should be. And forgetting those trying to be a Star Wars clone that Discovery and the films have become. I hope this series lasts to 7 series like all the star trek's did. It deserves to.
My Favourite New Show of 2014
There isn't much more to say that of all the shows started in 2014, this is my favourite. I expected to say this about Gotham or The Leftovers when seeing the promos for them all but I prefer this over them both.
The show has a very The Mentalist vibe to it. Ioan Gruffudd plays Henry Morgan like a dialled down Patrick Jane.
When I started watching this and enjoying it so much I was expecting it to be a mega hit in the USA - as we Brits only ever get to see the shows on Sky that are doing well in the USA. I was shocked to find it was on the verge of being cancelled due to poor viewing numbers.
This show deserves to survive. And this show definitely deserves a look over if you are searching something to watch.
The Family (2013)
As Reprehensible as it gets
I will admit I am not a good reviewer. And only review movies when they affect me in either an extremely good way, or an extremely bad. This is the latter. For this movie given it has an in-joke scene where they watch the movie Goodfellas I will use my review to compare it to that.
Everyone probably remembers the scene where Joe Pesci's character Tommy DeVito kills Spider; the young kid waiter who stands up to him for his mocking his earlier shooting him in the foot for no reason. And DeVito stands up and kills him for no reason.
Now think how you felt in that scene. Did you think hilarious, DeVito is a comedy genius, did you think good on there DeVito, that kid deserved that. Or did you find it shockingly unfunny and feel sympathy for Spider.
We now think of a "Comedy" film where that type of scene is pretty much played over and over again throughout the film with little else going on and that being its main running joke. Sound funny? Think of a film where you would be put in a place to sympathise with DeVito even though he has not changed - this is not a story of redemption or 'I have changed my ways and seen the light'. Think of a story that does not even justify the government letting this type of person run free - its not one of those 'well he is clearly getting worse people off the streets so its OK'
When you read the premise of the story you immediately think of the Steve Martin film My Blue Heaven. The difference is Steve Martin is funny, and played the role for laughs. He played the role with a cheeky charm and the main thing that saved it was his plan to rebuild the broken down baseball stadium at the end.
Now think of a comedy film where Robert DeNiro is playing it fully straight faced as a DeVito type mob guy. Is attacking people for no good reason and his family is too. Sound funny. If it does watch this film and seek help afterwards.
If it doesn't avoid this trash and watch the so much better My Blue Heaven if you want a laugh or Goodfellas if you want a drama. This is dreadful as both.
Evil Dead (2013)
Average, or better put boring and tedious
I very rarely review movies. I think I have only reviewed two. And I just felt a need to give my point of view on this movie. It was poor. I am a major Evil Dead fan. Of the first two (given that two is also just a remake of one) I much prefer the scares and seriousness of the original over the equally great but in a very different way camp fun-fest of the sequel. Like everyone I was looking forward immensely to Evil Dead's remake. I was planning on seeing it at the cinema until the reviews on here started popping up. So I never. I also never wanted to see it on Blu-Ray as the reviews were so bad. But someone at work said ignore the reviews and it is great old school horror and the people who disliked it on here would be the people loving the funfest of the sequel and Ash whereas this one is serious like the first one. So I rented it out from Blockbusters.
And I have to say I did not enjoy it at all. I found it boring, slow and tedious. Even when the action started it was still slow and tedious. The pluses are it starts off with a good opening in the first 10 mins. The who I thought would be lead girl Mia is truly gorgeous, and her story and plight of getting over her drug addiction seemed interesting so I said to myself at the start of the movie I hope she is not one of the one who gets killed off or turns into a demon. But she turns out to be the first one leaving a bunch of dead-weights left.
Now the problems it is so tedious. After she gets possessed it takes something that felt like 20 mins for her to show it. In the original it was one of the biggest scares where they are playing guess the card and she suddenly knew them all and then suddenly 'demoned out'. In this it is a slow drawn out process of slow decay. It literally made me say 'oh just get on with it' And when she finally turned out possessed I was not shocked, or scared I was saying, "finally". The thing also is there is also a continuity thing, as the second girl in comparison to the first seems to get possessed and demons out in minutes.
Another problem none of the characters, bar Mia, were at all interesting and like I say she was out of action from half way in.
The demon murders were unsatisfying. The entire film was demons attacking them, everyone refusing to fight back. Then them saying they will fight back and the demons every time reverted back to human form and each and every time they just gave up to get the same, we are not human scare come back.
For a good portion of the movie I had it on fast forward just so I can say I have watched it. This is something I never ever do.
Its a very poor movie and would recommend everyone gives it a miss. For closing I will say last night I watched No One Lives which is another movie getting mixed reviews and this film blew me away. That is how to make a good siege based horror movie. That film was epic. Rent that instead of this, trust me.
No One Lives (2012)
A Truly Must See
I very rarely review movies but this weekend, for totally opposite reasons I have wanted to review two. This week I rented out both this and also the Evil Dead remake.
The evil dead remake was an abomination. This however I thought was superb. When you watch films about serial killers this is exactly the sort of serial killer you want to see.
Its a very unusual film as the 'main' characters in this movie are all detestable and you do not root for them. This leaves you in a situation of not being sure how to take each scene of the movie. The thing is however it works and this film is a rarity that is a must see.
I don't really want to say too much to give anything away. This film is truly one of the best horror surprises I have seen in many years since Tucker and Dale Vs Evil (which was a horror comedy).
To finally say I am not sure why WWE funded this movie as there are no wrestlers in it. And its definitely not a family movie. On looking at the gross this movie made it truly annoyed me as it deserved to be a hit. Evil dead was soulless and terrible. This was ingenious and full of life, energy and soul and yet it tanked in the box office. Just shows Hollywood is never fair.
Total Recall (2012)
Very Poor - 4/10
First of all I rarely rate films as low as 4/10. I can count on one hand the amount I have rated this low. And maybe it is being overly harsh giving this one such a low score. But I am annoyed by this movie as it was such a missed opportunity.
Firstly I have never been a major Colin Farrell fan; there is nothing especially wrong with the guy. I just find him a tad condescending, smug and pretty boy acting in every single role he plays. In this movie he was OK, but the weakest link in this movie by far.
I mainly went to see this movie as I was interested in another take on the 1990 Paul Verhoeven imaging. With regards to that film. I always thought it was good. But was always confused when people claim it is a classic and one of the greatest sci-fi flicks ever made. Personally I think Robocop is infinitely better film by that very same Director.
But I was interested in this film also as Bryan Cranston was playing the Ronny Cox character. I love Breaking Bad and wanted to see anything with him in; I was disappointed to find he was only in this movie for literally 10mins screen time (possibly even less than this). He only says a few sentences in the entire movie.
The film I found quite boring and a chore to get through. There was no humour. No get up and go. It was literally Colin Farrell running over drab depressing film sets most of the time.
The way they handled the "come out of the dream" sequence was poor too. But on saying that I did feel Bokeem Woodbine was the standout performance of the entire film. I just felt it should not be him dealing with this particular scene as it was odd and ill fitting. But he should have been in this movie much more than this.
The ending was dreadful. I also found the answer of was it a dream was it real which they went for giving a definitive answer this time round. I felt they took the wrong choice - Spoilers below - I feel a much better ending would have been it being all a dream and the ending being Hauser (Farrell) waking up from the Recall machine experience and going home now completely hesitant and mistrusting of his wife and friends from this experience he had from Recall would have been a much better and memorable ending with a good psychological twist to the story and if they had of done this would have elevated they story somewhat.
Overall do not see this movie. Wait till it comes on DVD. Movies need to earn their cinema fee's and this does not. It is just a poor chase movie nothing more, nothing less. And better chase movies currently exist on DVD e.g Minority Report. The Terminator. The Island. See them instead
I quattro dell'apocalisse (1975)
Quite poor overall
I have owned this film on DVD for literally about 10 years but never got round to watching it. There was just something about it that would not make me interested in watching it. I bought it solely due to the name, Lucio Fulci who directed it.
Today I have finally watched it. The first 20 min's are quite good and sets up the film very well. Every character was interesting and likable. Lynne Frederick was beautiful in this too and gave a very sympathetic and likable character.
But it just went on and on and nothing seemed to happen. I was not wanting non stop gun fights or Fulci Esq. gore but it seemed for about one full hour it was just the cast either sitting riding and chatting, or walking and chatting wanting to get to a town. The impression was given once they got into that town something of pivotal interest was going to happen so you waited eagerly for them to get there.
So up till then it was OK for the simple reason you were waiting for something to come. The film then has the longest birthing scene in I think film history and it was at this stage I lost complete interest.
About 20 min's of the film is literally watching Lynne Frederick in immense pain giving birth. This is not something I class as enjoyable to watch at all. Once this extended scene was done, due to its outcome, I had lost all interest in the film and just wanted it over.
There was so much potential with this movie and the premise was interesting but it just fizzled into nothing. It was almost as Fulci had an interesting idea for a film but did not know what to do with it.
It is worth a rental but do not buy it.
Species III (2004)
Very Average and Confusing, but worth one watch nonetheless.
I have watched the first three one night in a row and it seems like this one the scriptwriters were seriously smoking something potent when they wrote the script to this.
You could argue it has somewhat logic to it all, and with the way the characters act, but the logic is like the sort of logic only the craziest bond villain would possibly have, or just Dr Evil logic.
For example the first moment of the movie has a college professor pretending to be an army officer just so he can steal the last surviving alien to take home to make a master pure alien race so he can win a Nobel prize? (I guess that said professor did not know that Nobel made the prize after inventing nitroglycerin, realising it was actually dangerous to mankind so created the Nobel prize specifically to reward scientists for making things that are good and a benefit for humankind) So how he thinks creating a pure race of alien that simply wants to destroy all human kind would win him this prize is way beyond me to understand?.
Now to get back above, why the army would also allow something so highly top secret and risky to be put in charge of and transported back to the base in the hands of someone who nobody didn't even know is beyond all rational logic to me too.
The only good thing about the movie in my opinion was the incredibly hot alien that comes out of nowhere in the final act just to be the final fight villain which obviously a film like this needed and clearly the filmmakers felt could not have been Sara as she was a very likable character so tacked on this other vicious Alien hot girl for solely that role.
Which by the way she came into the film by posting on the internet in the personals ads asking if anyone out there knows and can explain to her what alien DNA is, which our hero's roommate steals the info from his journal just so he can potentially get in on with the hot girl which surprisingly turns out to be a bad idea, you can tell I am not making this up as I doubt anyone could make this up bar the one writer of this movie.
Overall I felt it was an okay watch, the main alien girl was not a patch on Natasha Henstridge, but the incredibleness of the villain sort of made up for this. She should have been Sara though in my opinion as she was a better actor, had more edge to her and also was, in my opinion, much more attractive.
I will be watching 4 tomorrow.
