A Bronx Tale (1993)
Great 'De Niro' directing debut.
Robert De Niros directing debut in which he also features in, is a all in all very good picture. I would recommend it to fans of both De Niro and gangster flicks alike thou don't go in expecting a Goodfellas, Godfather type movie because that it is not. Its quite different then the majority of films in this genre.
It follows 'C' from being a 9 year old kid from the Bronx witnessing a murder committed by the towns main man 'Sonny' who then takes 'C' under his wing when he doesn't snitch. Thou 'C'dad (De Niro) doesn't like his son hanging around with him one bit. Thou despite his best efforts several years pass 'c' is now in his late teens and closer to Sonny then ever.
So you think this is going to be a rivelry story between C's real father and Sonny his father figure but it only touches on that sub plot a couple more times and its not really made into a big deal. Then it becomes a sort of 'Romeo and Juliet' type romance when 'C' falls for a girl from the African-American side of town which then brings on a tale of racism and conflict.
In short this is a very good film, the acting is well done, the 60's era its set in is very realistic and features some great music. Thou it chops and changes a few times the plot line in general is enjoyable. But like I say don't go into this thinking just because De Nero directs and features in the film its going to be a masterpiece. In fact I think his performance is a little disappointing for his great standard, it shows that his main focus was the directing (which is very well done)as opposed to acting. I felt that his scenes didn't have much heart to them despite the importance of the father to son scenes. Its actually the man who plays Sonny that steals the show for me I was captivated every time he came on screen, he managed to be humorous (the 'dice throwing' scene is hilarious), caring yet at the same time very unpredictable.
I think if your a fan of the Gangster type movie in general you will like this movie, the romantic side of it may or may not be to your liking. Its enjoyable and worth a watch so I do recommend you give it a go at least.
Oh and if you're just watching it for Joe Pesci don't bother hes in it for about 2 minutes which was a bit disappointing he wasn't in it for longer.
Hope you enjoy it!
Dalkomhan insaeng (2005)
When doing right goes very very wrong!
Firstly I love this movie just as I do with most Korean movies, the cinematography is beautiful which is sort of a standard with Korean movies. The basis of the plot line is revenge, in this case from both sides thou its the main character Sun-Woo you will be rooting for.
There's also plenty of laughs in this film (if you like you're comedy a little darker) some of the best laughs coming from the villains, or the several ingenious fight scenes.
The ending however may leave a few people confused I certainly took a couple of viewings before I understood. Thou thats my only negative with this movie. I fully enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good revenge film or fans of the 'Asia Extreme'DVDs. Plus there's a great feel of realism with this movie, sometimes Asian films go quite OTT and beyond belief especially with fight scenes but there's no fancy flying or slow motion take downs here, it does have a bar fight feel which I quite enjoyed thou perhaps fans of that sort of style fighting might be a little disappointed.
So in conclusion I would def recommend this movie to fans of Asian Extreme movies or even fans of revenge films in general. It doesn't drag on and keeps a good pace from the start. Give it a go I don't think it will disappoint!
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
The only thing greater then the power of the mind is the courage of the heart
This Best Picture Oscar winner is based on the real life of Mathmatician John Nash who won a Nobel Prize for his work yet was constantly challenged by his mental illness of Schitzophrenia, we see Russell Crowe take the lead role and as usual he does not disappoint. In fact the acting in this movie is pretty much flawless and very well cast. Jennifer Connelly (winner of Best Supporting Actress Oscar) is fantastic as the loving yet somewhat emotionally drained wife.
This movie does take a fair while to really get going and for those of us who didn't get the highest mark in maths at school a lot of the jargon will go over our heads. But be patient by about the 40 min mark things start falling into place and the pace goes up a couple of gears with a few twist and turns along the way.
The Cinematography is beautiful thru out so I have no complaints there. In fact I don't have many complaints at all its pretty much a flawless movie thou for me it just misses out on the full 10 marks because as previously stated there's a lot of things that went over my head and it takes a while to gain a decent pace. I would def recommend it to fans of Biopics and Drama.
If You like movies such as 'The Aviator' 'Good Will Hunting' and the 'Bourne'series then you should enjoy this movie and vice versa if you enjoy the movie and after something similar those mentioned would be a good place to start.
Thanks for reading really hope you enjoy this movie.
