It's not a bad film. It's just not a scary one
So this movie is a paranormal activity movie. It has the camera, it has the deep bass that precedes a shock moment. It has some poor person at the mercy of an evil entity. There is nothing new here, the story may differ but the delivery remains the same. Sigh. It's not made badly it's just not scary. I certainly wouldn't know how to freshen the franchise. I can see where they tried too, the final scenes were actually the most enjoyable for me. Due to the portal hopping loose end cleaning up. It could've done with some more of this, a little touch of crazy. It maybe a huge bearded demon hiding in a tree eating a unicorn? You'll watch it you may jump. But it will never hit the highs of the first film. No doubt I'll be back reviewing the next one which I hope has dinosaur spiders and a lady boy demon.
If you enjoyed playing DOOM the video game then this film will make you cry with disappointment in the way the film makers have squandered the rich source material. Primarily this is an action film loosely based on the latest installment of the video game DOOM 3. And thats where the similarities end. What we have is a team of tactical rescuers going to search for survivors from a research station on mars. The said research station has been attacked by forces unknown.
This film is formulaic to the very end, you'll not find much here that you haven't found in other mediocre sci-fi action films. Big men, Big egos big guns and lots of shooting, oh and a few "It's game time" moments sometimes such a style can be alluring but the plot is so shallow that you'll find it hard to carry on watching past the first half an hour. Sure its got some token DOOM moments, ie the BFG makes an appearance and has a lengthy section devoted to the build up of its actual use, but its a disappointment, and the much hyped FPS viewpoint which is refreshing only it lasts to shorter time for it to become properly enjoyable.
Ever since aliens, directors have tried to emulate the squad dynamic that the space marines employed, they had believability, the space marine in doom 3 come across as a bunch of idiots and why does one of them look like hes thirteen!! and hey there's even a token chirpy black man thrown in. They appear to have no training or discipline whatsoever.
Possibly the biggest departure and subsequent mistake of the film makers was to change the monsters from demons and hell spawn to genetically advanced humanoids from mars.
A weak and run of the mill action film, lets hope they don't ruin quake in the same way.
But if you like films with The Rock in them then its "Game Time"
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
apocalypse ...so soon
well no sooner had milla jovovich done away with her previous zombie killing fest, another adventure lurches menacingly toward her, or so the makers of this film would have you believe, in fact this films does little to further the praise (if there was much for the original) franchise, its loud brash incredibly clichéd, wise cracking black man anyone? and loose on any meaningful plot, in fact the film makers deemed far more appropriate to deal with the flashy fight scenes and sexy protagonists than anything else.
so racoon city is now over run and milla jovovich and jill valentine team up with various other survivors to escape from the zombie infested city, whilst being pursued by the umbrella corporations new toy, project Nemesis, an uber hard as nails villain, there s a less than engaging sub plot involving a doctor guiding jovovich and her lot to saving his daughter in return for there escape, and thats about it, there's no gravitas to any of the proceedings its just shoot explode zombies run and repeat, you wont care about the characters because there's nothing to make you care about them they act as eye candy and Little else.
the style of this film is very out dated as previously mentioned they even decided it was a good idea to include a token wise cracking black guy in it all, along with the non stop techno music accompanied fight scenes, if at point you do feel drawn into what happening in front of you it so still dispelled by the drivel that holds it together.
if you're a fan of the games then you may notice a few set pieces from resident evil two, the police a station and the gun shop are among the most obvious and there are a few corridor/alley way shots that a ripped straight from the game, other than that it strays so far from the original source material,if you don't know the games then you'd be forgiven in thinking the game was something of a devil may cry ilk.
still if you like formulaic, dated horror action films then you'll lap it up if not then it'll do as post pub fodder.
and if you don't drink then there may be nothing to stop its mediocrity depressing you, and making you wish you'd done something more worthwhile with an hour and a half
Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud (2007)
If its broken add some hillbillies
Well they've done it again a new pumpkin head film, the first pumpkin head film was perfect for its time, a dumb, gory, and clichéd monster flick. so heres how it goes, some one loses their loved one, goes to the witch in the woods, gets her to raise pumpkin head and have it murder everyone responsible. unfortunately the film makers have deemed it irrelevant to try and do any other than this, for the films fourth outing, deeming it far more suitable to add some lame romeo and Juliet sub plot, involving an idiotic family feud (over a car!!!!) and surprise surprise some gory pumpkin head slayings, so far so formulaic, but it doesn't stop there the acting talent in this flick is dire...oh so bad half of them can't even keep up a southern accent without slipping into their native and often posher accents. Lance henrikssen is on board so surely he would bring some gravitas to the movies proceedings...but no lance merely ambles on screen lets the words fall out mouth with absolutely no emotion or seemingly direction, and walks off again, i honestly think he just turned up for the money, then went off to his trailer to drunk and reminisce about aliens.
this film is utter cack there is no redeeming feature other than it ending credits which signal its all over.
despite the failings of ph:bf...if you want a no brainer that'll make you laugh for all the wrong reasons watch it.
if you want something with abit more meat and originality avoid.
