Madonna: Vogue (1990 Music Video)

Perfection!
12 February 2024
You can not listen to vogue without conjuring up the images of the video in your head. Effortlessly cool, Madonna at the height of her fame and beauty. Important to remember that in 1990 Aids was spreading fear through the world and the stigma for being gay was at an all time high. Madonna proved to be a major ally, pushing gay culture front and centre stage and also using main protagonists who developed vogueing on the New York gay underground scene. The middle eight name drop of the actors from the golden age of Hollywood is just genius and adds to the imagery of the song and video. Perfection!

Shame we didn't get another episode

They pulled out all the stops for this show, I'm sure with the intention of making more episodes, but it was never picked up by the BBC. A strong supporting cast and well written by Ruby wax. Unfortunately the weakest link is collins herself; wonderful to look at but her tendency to over act ruins what could be a great performance. I still feel it would have been worth another episode, at the end you do feel you would like to know what the character got up to next ..... Amazingly when Joan removes her make up at the end, you see the girl she used to be in the 1950s when she first went to Hollywood.

Disappointing Taylor
23 July 2023
I have tried to watch this film so many times over the years, the reason, Elizabeth Taylor of course! She looks dazzling in all the promotional photos, iconic, a queen not to mess with... that's where it ends! Her performance is weak including her voice which fails to command the script, as a character you neither like or dislike her as cleopatra. Her costumes are indeed wonderful, but many of them seem to drown and wear her, a beautiful face but not a dazzling clothes horse. Mine will not be a popular opinion but apparently Joan Collins was up for the part at one time.. I actually thought she could have made a better crack at it after seeing her in "The Land of the Pharohs" at the end of the Howard Hawks epic you really feel scared by her characters fate and feel her fear, Taylor was unable to stir any kind of feeling towards her character from this audience member. Worth her million dollar fee.... No!
