The backdrop of Versailles was magnificent enough but Maïwenn's portrayal of Madame du Barry was captivating. I honestly watched the film to see Johnny Depp's great comeback and his portrayal of King Louis XV was absolutely fine. His emotiveness added a complex element to the character that hasn't been portrayed in past films I've seen, but Maïwenn... oh! Maïwenn! Her Jeanne was captivating.
Loved the costumes, the sets and the way the story was played. The chemistry between Depp and Maïwenn was awkward in a very intentional way. That's not a criticism, they felt l lovers in a world where that kind of emotion wasn't allowed. Their chemistry portrayed that beautifully. It's well worth a watch, especially if you enjoy period pieces.
