Chalte Chalte (1976)
Psychotic woman in case of mistaken identity (poss spoiler)
What attracted me to this film was the soundtrack which features the famous song "chalte chalte mere geet yaad rakna kabhi alvida na kehena" This where it all ends for this film though. This film fails to live up to any type of expectation. The story though interesting is shoddily handled. The heroine makes a mark with her westernised outfits eg the lime green bikini. which at the time were quite a bold move for any bollywood heroine. you can see that the filmmakers have attempted something unique but seemed to have missed the mark. Simmi Garewal plays the psychotic widow who mistakes a man who looks exactly like her late husband quite well. She seems to be the star of the show and the main hero who we might as well forget as wasn't seen in many movies after Chalte Chalte. All in all this film features a fantastic soundtrack an interesting story failed by poor direction and some very bad acting. quite as measly 4 out of 10
Woh 7 Din (1983)
Entertaining enjoyable perfect sunday afternoon viewing
This Has to be one of Anil Kapoor's finer moments in bollywood. Being one of his earlier movies it is rarther quite good.. today's bollywood could learn a thing or two. The story centres around a love drama in which two lovers are torn apart and sacrifice their love for their circumstances.. Padmin Kolaphure plays the young and fiesty girl who has a thing for the new tennant living in the flat uptairs. thus follow a series of funny events as the girl attempt to attract Anil Kapoor.. A struggling Musician who hopes to make it big in bollywood. This film features some hillarious scenes and some very emotional moments. Naseer uddin shah plays the rich doctor who want to fullfill his dying mothers wish to see him married again after the loss of his wife. Thus begins the story where by Nasseer uddin shah vows to find his wife's lost love and unite them together. All in all which leads to a rarther questionable climax.. The view expressed in this film may be a bit too orthodox but the acting is brilliant and the soudtrack is excellent. A must for all to watch!
This movie is an interesting past life chilling drama. Hema malini and Rajesh Khana play the part of lovers in their past life only to be reawaked by the Reincarnated Hema malini who unearths a dark secret. This film is not a full on horror flim its more of as supense murder mystery that will leave you really spooked. The film features a lovely soundrtack featuring some lovely romantic numbers. Hema Malini's performance is really very good.Raj kumar plays the evil protagonist whose actions form the basis for the drama Though this wasn't the scarriest film I have ever seen it sure did spook me out for the rest of the evening. Worth a Watch 9 out of 10.
A unique visual experience.....
This film has a sort of small independent filmaker arthouse feeling to it. The story itself is quite simple and starts of with some very stunning visuals i the title song. Then begins the story with a violent murder. thus this is where Kaya(Udita Goswami) the budhist monk girl meets the dangerous dashing hollywood stlye cop(the Antonio Banderas of India-john abraham). After a gun battle in a dodgy carpark and a semi serious gunshot wound, begins the cop's escape from the corrupt and dangerous police force who want to protect their own backs! in the meantime Kaya is strugling with her love for shriven(the cop). The musical score is simply spectacular with earthy ethnic beats to match the spectacular locations where the film was shot! Some of the Scenes are simply stunning whereas a couple leave something to desire. on the whole a thouroughly enjoyable film that shows us that bollywood can be more than just mindless entertainment for the masses and that it sometimes has something of value to offer more films like this please bollywood needs them...
This film about the plight of women in india is indeed deeply disturbing and angry.Shock value and ultra realism have been used to the max. The world needs to wake up and understand the plight of women in more conservative societies, and in general. The film has been well shot and the acting is of a high standard, though right from the scene where Madhuri dixit is shunned by all through to Rekhas brutal rape the film seems to leave a bad taste that sort of leaves you feeling very shaken up indeed. this film is not for the faint hearted or those who want as a close a look as they can at the plight of women in india. This movie wasn't enjoyable and I don't think it was meant to entertain even though there are some lighter moments in the film. I would give this a 7 out of 10. not bad not entirely brilliant either.
awful stomach churning fare....
The famous Feroz khan used to be noted for his modern lavish productions that pushed the boudaries of indian cinema but sadly this film despite the slick promos falls flat on several occasions. What starts off as a poorly acted and insesitive film ends up being poor. Sadly the main fault in this film lies in its story that is a poor mish mash of poor D grade bollywood storylines, it has everything thrown in... murder, revenge love, action and of course the hoards of bikini clad women who really serve no purpose at all. without the bikinis the songs as just plain forgettable. The superbike championship was a nice innovative idea that tries but fails. this film is also choppy and bitty. scene's that do not seem to flow together.songs thrown in hap hazzardly. A very poor attempt by the man who brought us classics like "App jaisa koi" in Qurbani.
Pinjar: Beyond Boundaries... (2003)
Breathtaking and deeply emotional saga...(keep a box of tissues handy though)
Pinjar is one of the few movies that really leaves a mark and makes you think hard. Set in Partition India, this film Shows the true reality of partition India. Urmila gets full marks for her beautiful and deeply emotional portrayal of a suffering woman with no way to go. Her freedom, personal identity and family respect taken away overnight over a tragic land dispute. Manoj bajpai is simply brilliant as her remorseful abductor. There several moments in the film where one is brought to tears. The film at points is deeply traumatic. Some of the partition scenes are spine chilling, yet Urmila's endurance and survival are both remarkable. From a woman robbed of her freedom to woman who gave freedom to women in similar situations. A remarkable film that should be given credit for intelligent characters and storytelling.
Kati Patang (1970)
Spend a rainy afternoon with a cup of tea cookies & Kati Patang
This film is just the excuse for a lazy sunday afternoon. The story though a little old fashioned has been beautifuly presented with the centeral character played by Asha Parekh taking centre stage alongside Rajesh Khanna. The story centres around Asha Parekh who on the day of her wedding betrays her fathers wishes and runs away to her boyfriend only to find out that he has betrayed her and has found another woman. hurt and disillusioned the girl returns home to find her father dead due the shock of his daughters dissapearance. There is only one place left to go... her friends who is widdowed single mother on her way to meet her inlaws. sadly the there is an accident and Asha parek is left to play the role of the little childs mum and takes on the role of her friend. Enter in Rajesh khanna the man whom she would have been married to if she had not run away. This then becomes the beginnig of a beautiful love story between the two. the film features a lovely evergreen classic soundrack, a must watch film...
Koi... Mil Gaya (2003)
A fanstastic attempt at something differnt
Unfortunatley, I'm not sure that the indina public are ready for such a film though. Especial where the hero plays a difficult role IE there is some real acting involved. Bollywood heartthrob Hritik Roshan usually seen in glamourised love storys and stories where the hero sweeps the hearts of the female watching public does role that really gives him a chance to do some propper acting. His role as the mentaly retarded boy is well done and the issue is sensitively handled. Preity Zinta looks abslolutely stunning throughout the film. The special effects used in the film are top notch. they dont look tacky or cheap. The film takes on several storylines from various hollywood sci-fi films and creates a story that could be classed as India's ET. The only drawback is the length of the film. Maybe bollywood needs to shorten it films. to two hours rarther than the exhaustive three which does not work with all storylines. What seems to drag mid first half suddenly picks up second half and gets really exciting second half. The alien "Jadoo" has been created quite well with eye movements and some basic hand manouvers. The space ship looks top notch just like the big hollywood blockbusters something out of star trek of starwars! The kids in the film are lovely and funny. Rekha gives a soulful performance as Hritik's mum. The soundrtack is quite unique and suits the film well. definately a good one to watch...
Die Another Day (2002)
Has bond lost the plot?
Appart from Halle Berry's glamourous enterance which was a sort of recreation of Ursula Andress's epic enterance in Dr No. There was not alot that was tastefuly executed in this film. This film took james bond's usually unbelivable stunts and gadgets to stupid levels. Sadly there was nothing classy about this film except the decision to return to the aston martin which I have to say is true to the Bond franchise. Lost is the subtle pacing and classy action to give way to fast star wars style sci fi action fest wich really isn't in the true spirit of Bond. If they plan to continue making bond films they must not lose sight of what made the origial stories by Ian Fleming so Classy. Entertaining as it was this film just wasn't Bond.... shame really
