ITV Sport: EFL Highlights (2022– )

The revamp for EFL season 2023-24 is a significant improvement on the previous season. The rotation of clubs for the lead game is retained and allows extended post game interviews with team managers. This also provides a platform for club or supporter initatives which should be applauded.

The remainder of the show is purely focussed on the action rather than previous repetition with inane ex player comments which offered very little insight.

Credit to the presentation team for their introductions which are aided by fan pre-game excitement.

Clearly the commentators like to run with their fair share of puns and aliteration.

In this context Sue Thearle you are the best at not letting a theme run away from you.

The Outpost in Space

I really enjoyed The Outpost starring Jessica Green as a swords and sorcery tale which ran for 4 series. It was one of those rare TV series which ran to a logical conclusion before being cancelled. By the end it could have been classified as sci-fi as it moved into that genre to rationalise the sorcery elements.

So imagine my glee to recognise members of the mainly Serbian supporting cast popping up in roles in this new sci-fi series.

As other reviewers comment, the series needs a number of episodes to establish the characters and make them more believable than just one dimensional.

So give it time. I want to see more.

War Gamers (2022)

An untold story

The contribution, particularly of the WRENs, to this part of the war effort deserves recognition. It is an aspect of the war that is at least as important as the Battle of Britain. So this is a story worth telling.

I was initially frustrated the focus of the series, namely the war games, didn't appear until the middle episodes.

Stick with it and you get to understand how tactics evolved along with the contaxt, attitudes of the times and the opportunities missed by both sides along the way.

However, the human stories were worthy of inclusion and provided insight into a generation very different from now.

Be patient and you will be rewarded

This is the kind of gem you can unearth from your streaming services if you search hard enough (and are lucky). Not typical of any particular genre. When groundhog day spirals out of control. Ok, it doesn't have the highest production values but it is well constructed to support the story. And it is all about the story which develops over the series in unexpected directions.

I would have loved to see where a second series would have taken us.

I will look out for the creative team and see what they can achieve in the future. They deserve that opportunitity.

PS I loved the music too, haunting and in keeping with the show.
