Being mindful of the subjective nature of art, there are rare films that come along where you are transported, body and mind, into another world, another reality. These kinds of films are akin to a spiritual experience. Dune is just such a film.
It manages to world build at the pace where the viewer begins as though awakening from a star voyage and stepping into the corner of the cosmos where the story takes place. It does not try to tell you everything about everyone. Simply put, it does not explain itself. It lives it's own story and you are invited along. So much so that by the end, you feel as though you have just lived a life along side the characters.
In short, whether a fan of the books or just looking for something worthwhile to watch, Dune will not disappoint.
